Politics here is understood broadly to include social issues, religion, economy etc.

Friends/acquittances are understood as people you spend your free time with rather than people you "have to" spend time with (such as coworkers or family members).

I'm wondering how it is for people here. I have several real life friends and acquittances with whom I meet for a beer or so and we often get into heated discussions about politics, social issues, religion etc. I guess a lot of it would be cultural.

I don't know how to answer this question as none of the options fit me. I discuss politics with some friends, some of whom have the same views and some of whom who do not.

I used to avoid talking politics within the social context, but the gloves come off against anti-choicers, the ACW, Islam and the People's Liberation Army of Israeli Surplus.

Some of my friends disagree with me, but too goddamned bad.  I bought my friends Keith Olberman bobbleheads just to make the fucking point anyway.  They know this nigga's crazy.

I have no friends but if I did they wouldn't share my opinions. No one shares my opinions and that's a damn shame.

Most of my friends share my viewsish. They're left of centre at the least. I only know a few conservatives and I try not to hang out with many- christians do not good party people make.

I never talk about them.  None of my friends share my political views.  I don't give a shit about their ill-informed views and they don't give a damn about my crank insights, so instead our conversations revolve around aesthetic trivialities.

It depends.  Some people like talking about politics, some people are bored silly with it.  Some people are able to discuss politics, and some absolutely cannot.

Politics and Finance are very much the major topics of my conversations, both private and in social occasions. Which is hardly surprising, as my occupation and interests are heavily linked to both.

Btw, a colleague of mine recently returned from Poland after the burial of the President.

Her opinion of Poles:

"All the women are like top models"

"All the men are butt ugly"

Which makes Martinus' gayness even more incomprehensible.

Surely you jest . You are clearly the type that can gather people at will around you.

For close friends & family, it's a common topic & most of them share my views.  For other acquaintances, I generally avoid the topic unless 1) it seems like we can discuss differences without it getting personal or 2) it seems like we generally agree on things.

Throughout my career, most of my co-workers have had no clue where I stand politically.

It happens sometimes, but only with very good friends and with the knowlegde that no one is expecting to change anyone's mind. Discussions also invariably have to end with the cliché that politicians don't give a shit about the common citizen anyway

Me either I avoid the discussions whether our opinions seem compatible or not.  When the subject tries to come up I always give a little laugh and nod like I agree and change the subject as quickly as possible.

Most of my friends share some kind of view I at least understand. Some are less crazy than me, some more so.

I feel I'm involved in a reasonable amount of political discussion, mostly with folks who kind of agree with my own views or at least don't disparage me personally, for having whatever views. But not always.  I find in real life that I only come to languish style loggerheads rarely. I do however live in a neighbourhood which is comfortably in my political sphere of understanding. If I lived in other parts of Vancouver, I'd get in trouble more often with local yakkers.

very different from here. :glare: ;) :p

Imagination, creativity, artistic eye, interest in History and the ability to see many possible alternatives are tell-tale signs of intelligence. Intelligent people can always gather others... as long as they wish it.

I have twice the IQ of my friends. Why would I discuss politics with them? More to the point most of them don't share my views at all so our time together is more productively spent engaged in other activities.

I rarely talk politics with my friends. When I do, I tend to clash significantly with them, which is great fun. Israel, in particular can be a very amusing topic. I once made a diplomat friend of mine leave a party after saying Israel was too feeble during the last war and should have leveled everything up to the Litanni.

I talk about politics seriously with a few people, and usually more conceptually than about concrete things.  I am somewhat uninformed about day to day political issues and am hesitant to jump in on discussions in real life.   I do also kind of enjoy being a troll in real life discussions.

It is. I must admit to feeling extremely flattered, especially as the only times I can recall posting in a discussion with Martim prior to today I was opposing, not supporting, his viewpoint.

I am curious as to where Martim has come by the opinion that I have an "artistic eye"; I don't particularly consider myself to have one, or at least, not a "modern" one.

I used to be a very vocal liberal. But now I am bored with anything political and whenever someone brings it up I argue on the side of apathy.

"Why do you care so much? We are all pawns, dude. We are all pawns."
