Title: UK organ donor register has 800,000 errors
Post by: jimmy olsen on April 11, 2010, 08:49:46 PM
A bit odd that he's only exempted his eyes, but still, one could understand a mistake here or there, but 800,000?

Organ donor discovers eye error

Stephen Banks

The NHS has confirmed up to 800,000 people on the UK donor register may have had their wishes about which organs they wished to donate recorded incorrectly.

Stephen Banks, 27, from Redditch, Worcestershire, was shocked to discover that upon his death, his eyes could be made available for donation - against his wishes.
Review on organ donor blunder

I have to say I am a little angry. How could such a major error occur?

This could have had an awful effect on my loved ones - if something had happened to me.

I was asked about organ donation when I filled out a form to renew my driving licence, in February.

Before I made my decision, I discussed it in depth with my partner and my family.

There was no obvious way to contact them and correct the mistake

I decided I was happy to donate all my organs - apart from my eyes.

I know it sounds strange - after all, it's not going to make any difference to me.

We had a bit of a joke about it - 'the eyes are the key to the soul' and all that.

But I just didn't want to - and so I chose not to tick the eye box.

'My choice'

Two weeks ago, I got a letter from the DVLA, confirming the renewal of my driving licence, and with it a letter from the NHS which said: 'Thank you for agreeing to donate your organs'.

When I looked down the list - it said I had agreed to donate everything - my eyes included. And what's worse - there was no obvious way to correct the mistake.

I haven't tried contacting them. I feel a bit embarrassed to call up and say: 'I don't want to donate my eyes'. I feel a bit awkward about it.

But at the end of the day, it is my choice and these are my wishes.

Hell, I didn't opt to be a donor at all but the license people made me one anyway.

Yep, that's what he'll look like when they pull his eyes out.

I just pictured the scene from Monty Python's the Meaning of Life when the two guys show up to collect his organs after explaining to the guy no one ever mentioned you had to be dead first.

Yeah something similar happened to me.  A few years ago when I renewed my ID card, the temp worker asked me a standard question - "do you allow us to notify the voter registration office to update your address?"  I gave a simple "no", and I could see his shock.  He just didn't know what to do.  I imagine that most people would have said yes.

A few weeks later, I received a letter from the voter registration office saying to the effect of "we note your request for us to update your address.  However, since we cannot find you in the list of registered voters under any address, we cannot process your request.  Here is a voter registration form.  Please register in order to vote."

Not a problem for me.  I told the powers that be that they can have whatever they can use.  The rest is getting cremated and ground into the most expensive carpet of the richest person I know that happens to be on my shit list at the time of my death. :P

The easy solution is just to enforce mandatory organ donation for everyone.
