Title: Songs that capture the essence of a country
Post by: The Brain on March 19, 2010, 04:58:03 PM
Hello, friends. I was sitting around the house downloading porn when I came to think about songs that really capture the essence of a country. I think it could be interesting to post songs that YOU think encapsulate what a certain country means. So I'm gonna start off:

USA:

Between them these three songs manage to span the greatness that is America and its mentality:

Life-affirming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1M-qGSoAy8

Sentimental:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U69Dqc4WqI (hey it was good enough for Ritchie Blackmore)

Spiritual: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2PggDw-vww

Sweden:

For reasons that are somewhat obscure to a non-Swede this song defines Sweden:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5BKFLwh2DI (we are multicultural and deal with important issues... no matter what the creative cost)

OK I'm spent for now. I need more coffee and I'm gonna get some whisky.

I think it's still ok to like this song, but soon it'll show up in a Ford Explorer commercial and get driven into the ground.  :(

It's pretty fun since traffic is light in most places and we lack toll roads.  The problem is some people drive SO SLOW it's ridiculous

IF you meet more than 5 oncoming cars in an hour traffic isn't light.

Germany's national soul is encapsulated in Knorkator's parody song "Deutschland ist schön"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_rcUrLajak

TRanslation of the lyrics:
QuoteGermany is beautiful, Germany is beautiful
With its beautiful rivers and beautiful lakes
Germany is beautiful, Germany is beautiful
With its beautiful valleys and beautiful mountain heights

And the forests are so beautiful, and the fields are so beautiful
And the cities are so beautful, and the flower beds are so beautiful
Where the beautiful trees stand you can go for a beautiful walk
And see the beautiful girls, so very beautiful, ja

Germany is beautiful, Germany is beautiful
With its beautiful rivers and beautiful lakes
Germany is beautiful, Germany is beautiful
With its beautiful valleys and beautiful mountain heights

In winter the snow lies beautifully, in spring it melts beautifully
In summer you can swim beautifully, in fall you can let it be beautifully
The tomatoes are beautiful, too, beautiful in salads
The pig roast tastes beautiful, so very beautiful

Germany is beautiful, Germany is beautiful
With its beautiful rivers and beautiful lakes
Germany is beautiful, Germany is beautiful
With its beautiful valleys and beautiful mountain heights

And Bavaria is beautiful, and the Black Forest is beautiful
And the Rhineland is beautiful, and the Palatinate is beautiful
And Thuringia is beautiful, and Hessen is beautiful
And Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is beautiful, so very beautiful, ja
And the Lüneburg Heath is beautiful, so very beautiful, ja
And the last corner of the Lausitz, 30 meters from the Polish border
Is so beautiful, so very beautiful.

This one captures the German national soul rather nicely I believe.

Quote
Heil, heil East Germany
Land of fruit and grape
Land where you'll regret
If you try to escape
No matter if you tunnel under or take a running jump at the wall
Forget it, the guards will kill you, if the electrified fence doesn't first.

America can be an awful place.  It seems you have all these swarthy people running around who don't speak proper English.  You guys might want to get on that, before they lower your property values.

I didn't remember the line about crossing the Rio Grande. Maybe Lettow's theory isn't as outlandish as we thought. (More likely about Mexican rebels, but still...)
