IONIA -- To the little boy's mother, it was just a 6-year-old boy playing around.
But when Mason Jammer, a kindergarten student at Jefferson Elementary in Ionia, curled his fist into the shape of a gun Wednesday and pointed it at another student, school officials said it was no laughing matter.
They suspended Mason until Friday, saying the behavior made other students uncomfortable, said Erin Jammer, Mason's mother.
School officials allege Mason had displayed this kind of behavior for several months, despite numerous warnings.
"I do think it's too harsh for a six-year-old," said Jammer, who was previously warned that if Mason continued the practice he would be suspended. "He's six and he just likes to play."
Jammer says her son isn't violent, and there are other, more effective ways of teaching him not to make a gun with his hand.
"Maybe what you could do is take his recess away," suggested Jammer, adding her son doesn't have toy guns at home.
"He's only six and he doesn't understand any of this."
:bleeding:
Might as well just preemptively ban every boy from ever coming to school then.
They tackled that problem.

Is a child walking around with a hands a normal sight in the US? I mean, I suppose it's not something you can easily conceal, and the way the story is presented, the kid simply walked to the victims and then made his hand into a pistol - it's surprising no one tackled him by then.

Everyone was probably too afraid to try and tackle him. After all, he did have a "hand" gun.

I first read that as Carl and got very confused :D
I think you guys are confusing me with one of my college roommates. Of course, I realize it's funnier if it was me. :)
Hilarious. Who exactly are the morons in charge of schools these days. When i was six if they suspended every kid who made a gun shape with his/her hand, they would have empty classrooms... hmmm
maybe they are trying to combat classroom overcrowding by suspending kids who do anything other than color inside the lines and nod their heads politely when spoken to?
weird.

Quote8-year-old arrested for bringing loaded gun to school
An 8-year-old boy has been arrested for bringing a loaded 9-mm handgun to his elementary school, according to a report at the Investigative Voice. The gun was discovered at about 3 p.m. Thursday at Sharp Leadenahall Elementary School in South Baltimore, which is located between Federal Hill and M&T Bank Stadium, after a teacher overheard the student threatening to shoot a classmate, the site reported.
"This is a tragedy for everyone but it could have been a lot worse," Jonathan T. Brice, executive director of student support for the city school system, told the web site.
UPDATE, 11:40 p.m.: The city schools system just released a statement, confirming that a third-grader at Sharp Leadenhall Elementary was arrested Thursday for possession of a loaded .380 caliber handgun. School staff determined that the student was acting suspiciously and began closely monitoring the student's behavior, eventually searching his backpack and contacting school police to retrieve the weapon. The student was arrested and transported to the Department of Juvenile Services.
Schools and city police are conducting an investigation to determine the gun owner and the purchase origin of the weapon before determining if charges should be filed against others that may have contributed to the student coming into possession of the handgun.
In addition to being arrested, school officials said the student may face "extended suspension" or expulsion following "due process."
Sharp-Leadenhall Elementary has been described as a school attended exclusively by special education students. As of the 2008-2009 school year, it had just 66 students enrolled.

Given typical gangsta fire discipline, he'd have had trouble hitting the broad side of a barn, unless it was painted like a cop.
