Option 2: Michael Jackson

So now that the 80's and 80's revivals are safely over which of the longstanding rivals' music was better during the decade?
The King of Pop's Discography:
Off the Wall
Thriller
Bad
His Purple Majesty's:
Prince
Dirty Mind
Controversy
1999
Purple Rain
Aound the World in a Day
Sign o' the Times
Lovesexy
Batman
Graffiti Bridge
I had to go with Jackson. Prince's music, while memorable for me, just doesn't have the historicalness associated with it to make it great.
Who the fuck picks Michael Jackson over Prince? WTF?

Jaron.
I'd pick Jackson as I have no recollection of Prince music but Prince is a Vikings fan.
Frankly, that's more and enough to even surpass the Beatles.

He fucking made Thriller, while Prince did Purple Rain. 1-0 for Wacko Jacko.
Where's the neutral option?

Its called not voting. :P
Managed to persuade them to drop the Jaron option then? :P
Why pick one, when you can have Prince Michael Jackson?

Prince by a broad margin, if we're talking about music. Prince I will actively listen to, whereas an MJ song on the radio I don't mind, but I'm not settling down for the usually awful "deep cuts" on his albums. Purple Rain as an album can easily hold its own against Thriller, not to mention all of Prince's other work.

Jackson, I don't think I even knew Prince existed in the 80s, and while I appreciate his music now, he's never gonna over take Jackson's position of 80s supremacy in my mind.
Prince, easily.
There was no one better at writing clever, catchy pop tunes than Jackson. But Prince could match him, and do truly innovative stuff, too. And Prince produced a lot more material during the period under discussion.
Prince, obviously. I mean, the guy wanted to fuck your girlfriend, and she wanted to fuck him, and STILL listening to his music meant she ended up fucking you...comon...what more needs to be said?

Probably Michael if you include his Jackson 5 stuff. Otherwise Prince.

I'm not European, then.
At least with this poll one doesn't have to worry about one's views about the artist's personal life coloring their reception - because both Jacko and Prince are disgusting douchebags.

I think it's basically a referendum on Prince. Most can agree that Jackson was a solid but somewhat overrated artist, otoh Prince was either a genius(lol) or a hack.
I think Jackson's death was just a ploy to win sympathy votes in this poll.

I'm more of a Jackson fan (well, 70s and 80s). However good he was though, Prince is a genius. I mean, take look at this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=madax7-lMvM) shit.
Never listened to Prince. His level of fame is just magnitudes less and he was before my time so....

I wrote the poll specifically for the period between Jacko's first solo album and when Prince started calling himself:

That was the period of their rivalry. Looking at their entire careers I might be tempted to vote for Captain Eo; the Jackson Five is great and his 90s albums were okay while Prince churned out a lot of crap during that decade. Looking at the 80s specifically I went with Prince. Prince had some misfires during the decade but overall his work is incredible and his catalog is huge. Jacko had three solid album during the same period but, in my opinion, none of them compare with Purple Rain or 1999.

Best as I can tell, Prince deliberately put out some bad material after he started using the symbol, just to fuck with the record company.
