Title: Hey, British Islanders!
Post by: Syt on December 12, 2009, 08:18:07 AM
Please explain ...  this:

You're supposed to hate us, not emulate us! Stick to your warm ale and leave the Glühwein and bratwurst to us!

Glüehwein already stolen (and perverted) by scandies

Raisins in glögg. :x

I ate a Norwegian reindeer burger in Kiel once. Was good. Was a bit disappointed that I didn't find bits of glowing red nose, though.

Its stolen from some German thing?
I always thought it was just a traditional Scandi drink of the same origins as glogg.

Yes, we stole it, just like we stole the christmas tree and pretty much every other christmas tradition from germany in addition to a few hannuka ones.

Irish diaspora, cheap and plentiful Irish bands.   And as Beeb already mentioned, a monopoly brewer willing to handle the meta marketing.

You'll find the occasional "burger bar" or "Western steakhouse". Otherwise, "American" over here is defined by McD, BK, KFC, the occasional Hooters and a TGIF. In Germany you'll also have Pizza Hut.

Can't recall any American-styled bars offhand. American influence is very dominant in fast food though.

Irish pubs can be divided into two types here, the plastic ones for everyone and the "real" ones where the Irish drink. There used to be a particularly fine Irish pub here in Preston, but it slowly lost it's clientele as the Irish economy boomed, got done up as a fake Irish pub and is now an English city centre pub.

In Newcastle I recall one called Old Orleans yet for some weird reason was New Orleans themed; blues tat on the walls and all that. Lots of tatty 'western'/cowboy themed bars too. Sports Bars are also often kind of Americanish. But no specific 'American Bar'

There is also Glühwein in Alsace and Christmas markets but I don't think Syt and the Germans will disapprove nor will they surprised  :D
Besidesm Glühwein is a good way to dispose of not so good wine
I tasted glögg thanks to the Swedish Church in Paris and it wasn't that good. Glühwein/Vin chaud FTW!

There's one in a shopping mall in my city, part of a national chain. Lots of burguers, ribs and things like that. Also, unlimited Pepsi refills.

It might be because there are 4 or 5 national chains plus the regionals and the mom and pop outfits all trying to knife each other.

And Americans are fat.

Yeah.
Pizza hut...fairly mid range stuff. Where you go if you're not pathetic enough for mcdonalds but you don't want to make an occasion/are to cheap to go to a real restaurant.
Dominos though is really expensive takeaway stuff. Tasy though.

There is very little emulation of foreigners when it comes to pubs and bars; the British ones are the best after all  :bowler:

Now, cafes and restaurants are a very different matter; if it wasn't for foreign influences and ideas that scene would be depressing beyond belief.

In Sweden we have a big bostonian-american chain of sports bars called O'Learys. Great place to watch a game and have a few beers.

One objection I have to British pubs as shown in movies (Yanks and Shaun of the Dead come to mind) is that the bar itself looks kind of cluttered and uncomfortable for drinking.

edit: Crying Game, very claustrophobic bar.

Very few people drink at the bar.  But they're not terribly cluttered up front - the spirits are behind the bar as are the draught taps which is all you're likely to find.

Some pubs do have small and overcrowded bar areas. It depends on the type of pub as well as the actual size of the bar. By standing at the bar you are stating that you are available to talk to all and sundry.......sitting at a table is a more private experience.

I really miss German Christmas Markets. I wish we had them here too. Especially Glühwein, which made Christmas even more enjoyable.  :P

We DO have many Irish pubs, though... the Irish seem to be irresistibly drawn to building them everywhere.

Not very different except in style, decor and food which is american-influenced. Loads of TVs, yeah, so even if there's several games on at once you know there'll be a TV with your game on.
