QuoteNEW YORK (CBS) ― Study: Diet Soda Drinkers Suffer Kidney Problems
Even though a lot of folks try to stick to water these days, it's not tough to find die-hard diet soda drinkers.
Lien Pollio admits to how many times a day she partakes of the diet beverage: "Three times, lunch, dinner and nighttime."
"Probably about two 20-ounces a day depending on whether or not I'm tired," said Kelly Fox, another diet soda drinker.
And Sharilee Hill said, "I used to drink Diet Redbull but then I switched to Diet Mountain Dew. We drink a lot of it."
However, one study examined more than 3,000 women for 11 years, and found those who drank two or more diet sodas a day were at double the risk for kidney damage, CBS station WCBS-TV reports.
The researchers did not learn whether it was the soda or the artificial sweetener in the drink that caused the damage.
"You can't conclude that the sodas caused this problem conclusively but it suggests that there's an affect on kidney function so people have to be aware that there's a possible issue in doing anything in excess," said Dr. David Goldfarb, kidney specialist with NYU Langone Medical Center.
Goldfarb said this is one of the first studies on the effects of diet soda.. and a lot more needs to be done before people make drastic changes. "They should not be throwing out their diet soda at this point but like I said I think moderating their intake of diet soda is a reasonable thing to do."
The diet soda lovers we found said say the study is interesting but they plan to keep on chugging their favorite drink.
"There are so many other things that we can do that are a lot worse for us so we figure, if that's our only vice we're doing good," said Katie Blanch.
Two ladies said they've run five marathons in the last 6 months, so they're balancing things out with lots of exercise.
Diet soda is one of those things that I can easily go crazy on. Drinking a 16oz can of Diet Shasta Cola as we speak. :(
I guess diet is going to have be included in the great Soda Tax as well.
Red bull is deadly. I can't imagine it working in diet form though. Isn't the point of it to fill it with lots of sugar?

I prefer my sweet flavored toxins with real sugar.

So you only drink Mexican soda? :contract:
Meh. They are studies about everything causing everything.
Sheesh... I drink diet soda, the ones with aspertame, usually at most one a day. This is pretty worrisome, maybe anyway. Have to see more studies or what ever, to find if this actually turns out to be valid at all, or how damaging.
Aspartame (the main flavor component of diet coke) is metabolized fairly quickly into phenylalanine and aspartic acid. These are two of the essential amino acids (i.e. you'd drop dead without them). I sincerely doubt they're the cause of abnormal kidney damage versus non-diet drinking population.
I'd love to hear their biochemical justification behind the theory...
Fuck it, I'm lighting up another Shasta for the road. It's cheaper than food and nobody lives for ever anyways. :elvis:

:mmm: Sure could go for a nice celery tonic right now.
In other news, Shasta uses Splenda. And after drinking two Big Value cans, it is giving me: [ed anger] loose stool [/ed anger]. <_<
Celery soda? Holy shit.
I mean that kosher Coke stuff they put out for Passover. Yellow cap = sugary goodness. :mmm: They also sell Mexican Coke down here for when the Jews aren't celebrating whatever that is. :P
My stool is long and hard.
I don't know who this is news to. Aspartame, at least, has been linked to all kinds of bad long-term effects for a long time.
This is why I stick to vodka

Yeah, I thought this was pretty much common knowledge.
Asparlame.
I'm trying to stick to my red vermouth these days. A liter for Italian for 6 bucks? I'll take it!
Big deal. They have dialysis machines these days.
Wait, that bitch drank 3x Red Bull or Mountain Dew per day? It's not the sweetener that killed her kidneys.

Anything can be harmful in excess quantities, but isn't a lot of the anti-aspartame craze a bit on the cooky side?

If 3 per day puts her into so much trouble, I weep for Caron Butler's kidneys.
QuoteI lost 11 pounds this summer by giving up Mountain Dew. That's right Mountain Dew. A lot of people don't know I'm a Mountain Dew addict so I guess this is my confession.
To try and give this up was crazy for me! I was going through withdrawals. I was in the bed sweating. My wife would turn over in the bed and ask "Are you OK?" Honestly, those first two weeks without The Dew [were] the roughest two weeks of my life. I'm talking headaches, sweats and everything. Before that I drank at least six 12-ounce Mountain Dews a day.
It was so bad at one point that I had to have a cold one right there at the night stand before I went to bed. I had to get the coasters and let it drip a lil' bit and just have it waiting on me. Come 2 a.m., I'd wake up out of my sleep, I'd pop one open and hear the fizz sound ... and just down it! Then I always had to have another one in the morning when I woke up. Before practice I had one too and before games I would knock back two.

Yes.
The anti-aspartame cooks have the same kind of scientific backing as the anti-vaccination crowd (none).
Notice that their article had zero biochemical justification. We're left to infer a direct correlation when the reason behind it could just as well be that people who drink diet coke versus regular coke are more likely to be diabetic (shocker) thus have a higher chance of having shot kidneys.
Aspartame has been tested hundreds of times, and as far as I recall (without resorting to Wiki for detailed analysis) only the very gullible have ever died as a result of ingesting it.
Too much Taurine (an ingredient in Red Bull and many other drinks) can cause kidney damage. It screws with your kidney's ability to notice the potassium in your system, making it seem like you aren't getting enough potassium, and making your kidneys work too hard, causing pain, and problems with function. At least that's what happened with me when my high blood pressure was diagnosed. One of the first things they asked about, noting the kidney damage (small) that i had was die I drink a lot of red bull.
I drink none, though I used to drink genki drinks in Japan, which are the same thing, and likely contributed.
Also if any of these people use Citran or anything with ephedrine in it, that also messes up your kidneys if you go beyond the daily recommends. which most people do with sodas.
