Title: Electronic music
Post by: Josquius on November 03, 2009, 03:46:41 PM
So, traditionally I've always been a rock music kind of guy, some variation into the weirder ends of indie such as the Fiery Furnaces but the thought of songs without much in the way lyrics was always iffy to me.
Over the last few years though I have noticed I've started to like quite a bit of electronic stuff a lot.
Through the entry level drug of Deutsche Niew Velle its happened.
Modern stuff still souns shitty to me but the likes of Kraftwerk, Grauzone and Black Devil I'm 'down with' as the kids said way back when.

So...any suggestions of good analogue eletronic music from back in the 70s and 80s?
Or am I alone in my weird new like.

Faust and Can are two Krautrock bands from 70's you might like.

If you don't have them already get Bowie's triptych (Low, Heroes, Lodger) and his later works Earthling and Outside.

Gary Numan - Telekon.

See why so many others cite him as such a huge influence.

Check Last.fm for similar bands. Myself I like bands like Feindflug, Heimataerde, Unternehmen Stahlklang, ...

I'll take notes from this thread.
I like this kind of music but it's not really popular here in belgium. At least with us youngsters.

Friends of mine also like Terminal Choice, Eisbrecher, ASP, and a couple other bands which I forget (and don't like).

Not the kind of electronic music specificially requested, but while we're on the subject, I think this is some good stuff:

Röyksopp:

The Knife:

Justice:

And I'll also take this as an excuse to link this great dancing to Detroit proto-techno, from 1982:

No such thing as too much Bowie.

(Except those Tin Machine albums.)

If you like OMD, then also try Howard Jones and Thompson Twins.

Dont think any of them used actual musicians.

OK, good so I'm not alone.

Some of those I've given time to in the past.
Bowie- I've got Heroes and don't like it too much, I far prefer his early stuff. Haven't heard the other two though.
Can, Neu- Meh. Somewhat OKish but too...proggy. Not too electronic. Not even too punky.

Others will be checked

I don't know Grauzone, but Kraftwerk and Black Devil are fairly different styles of electronic music, though they're both great.

A lot of people are recommending Krautrock bands, which while great and German, aren't really that snyth-based in my experience.  Neu! is one of my absolute favorite groups and represents everything great about 1970s West Germany, but they are exclusively guitar based, I think.

On the dance side, look into early 80's "hi-NRG" records.  Virtually anything Patrick Cowley or Bobby Orlando produced is gold.  On the rock/punk side, definitely Cabaret Voltaire, Suicide, the futuristic Bowie period, Tuxedomoon,  Pere Ubu has some interesting synth elements.   Soft Cell kind of straddling the line.
