Dunno how it works on your Blackberry (?) but on my soon-to-be-replaced WinMo 6.1 phone, you go to Menu in the Google app & then "Latitude" is one of the options.  You can enable, disable, add friends, etc. from that menu.

You have to share your location to participate (though there does seem to be some "hiding" function), but you can manually set your location if you can't or don't want to use GPS.

And if you have a GPS chip in your phone, that should work with Google Maps regardless of whether you subscribe to any other GPS services.  I use Google Maps & Bing Mobile as a poor man's GPS navigation service sometimes.

I didn't put it on my Blackberry (though I guess I could...) but rather my Sony Ericcson W760.

Oh, FWIW my phone must be using cell towers sometimes when I'm downtown to triangulate my position.  I do NOT work in Kentucky (not that there's anything wrong with that :D ).

Same here.  It cannot get a fix on my actual location (closest it seemed to get was about 100 meters away).

That's about the limit you can get with cell tower triangulation.  We use timing delay to calculate position, but radio waves broadcast from a cell phone don't usually take a direct path back to the cell tower.

Well the thing is my BB has a GPS (supposedly) so does it really need to be relying on tower triangulation?
Title: Re: Google Latitude
Post by: derspiess on October 21, 2009, 03:18:53 PM
The buildings downtown affect my phone's GPS signal (same thing for my stand-alone GPS which is more robust).  But once I get out of downtown, it is pretty accurate.

My HTC Hero even tries to use wifi if it can't use GPS or the cell towers

There's over a dozen "studios" within 15 minutes from my home that I noticed when walking hom from various public transport stops, so chances are good that if the location is a bit off that it covers one of those locations. The unregistered street hookers neer Praterstern 2000 m or so off would worry me more as location. :P

Do you have your GPS activated?  If so then it shouldn't need it for Google Latitude; but the within 100 m accuracy would make suspect that you are using tower triangulation rather than GPS.

The GPS in my own phone is not very accurate either, especially when I'm indoors.  It can often be one parallel street off.  My guess is that the tolerances for the phone GPS are much, much looser than tolerances for car GPS devices, for reasons of practicality.

Roscoe nearly escaped just now.

The little bitch broke the iron ring thing that connects his leash to his collar (I TOLD Princesca that thing would not hold :frusty: ), and then like five minutes later while I was leading him back to the house by his collar he slipped out of his collar as well.  Fortunately he responds well to Roscoe P. The gate our of our backyard managed to be left open the other day.  Our two year old mutt of course ran around the neighborhood, and someone called bylaw enforcement on us.

But seven year old Roscoe just stayed in the backyard.

Malthus showed me a RF collar for his cat.  If the cat goes missing he can take this very large device and it 'll make an old-school "beep" sound as he gets closer to dear old fluffy.

I of course told him it was simpler to not let your cat outside.
