Maybe of interest to some here, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Complete edition seems to be available for around 4GBP, USD$6-7 at the moment on several UK retailers sites like amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001RIYNF2/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller= (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001RIYNF2/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=)
That is better than the 80 it was going for on Amazon a while back.
 such a great game.

It really was. One of the few games that I literally just played out (played until I couldn't think of a single thing new to do). Wonder movies FTW!
I've never played it. Is it a game that would still be enjoyable after 10 years, or would one mostly just play it now for the nostalgia value?
I still play it every now and then. The movies alone are pretty kick ass.
Still a great game. If I see it in a store i'll buy it. Nevrr played the expansion and would really like to play it.

The atmosphere is still wonderful. Have they done anything to raise the resolution?
Don't think Firaxis has touched it in many years. I wish they would have. Civ3 was trash. AC2 would be awesome.

I googled and there seems to be a config edit that works for people.
Hm, I wonder if it will run on Vista 64....
We won't see SMAC 2 while EA still has the rights.
it is not complete yet but you guys should really try Planetfall, the AC mod for CIV4:BtS

yeah it's worth a play. maybe some of the best atmosphere created for a game ever. BUT it's still civ 2.5 in the end, so the end games get pretty tedious if you pick the world conquest path.

Overall, I still think Civ2 (
without some of the later expansions) was overall a better game, but, yeah, AC had a great atmosphere, which makes it seem to be in a truly alien setting.
I have long held to faith that AC would continue to work and entertain me forever. Then I tried to install it on Vista. *Sigh* my unfailing capacity to believe what I prefer to be true rather than what the evidence shows to be likely and possible has always astounded me. I longed for a caring Universe which will save me from Firaxis' childish mistakes, and in the face of mountains of evidence to the contrary I pinned all my hopes on the slimmest of doubts. Alpha Centauri 2 has not been proven to not to be in development, therefore it must be in developement.

Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendent, and to embrace them is to achieve enlightenment.

A nice little theory for a universe of only 12 dimensions. If only we lived in one. :(

So the answer is yes then.

Will we next create false Gods to rule over us? How proud we have become and how blind.

It is every game's duty to go into the recycling tanks.
Greed ensures the transfer of wealth from the gamers to the developers. :(
We hold game to be sacred, but we also know the foundation of game consists in a stream of codes not so different from the successive frames of a watchvid. Why then cannot we cut one code short here, and start another there? Is game so fragile that it can withstand no tampering? Does the sacred brook no improvement?

In the case of Paradox games I don't think there is any question that it not only brooks it, but requires extensive tampering.
WTF you guys made me reinstall the game <_<

Word. When all else becomes stale & boring, out comes AC...
I like the religious chick.
Does the original AC run on Vista? I haven't played in a long while, and not since XP days.
The quotes (http://www.generationterrorists.com/quotes/smac.html) from the game are a virtual goldmine.
QuoteI maintain nonetheless that Win/Mac dualism can be overcome. With sufficient enlightenment we can give substance to any distinction: mind without body, north without south, pleasure without pain. Remember, enlightenment is a function of willpower, not of physical strength.

Runs without issue for me. Or at least I don't think I had problems. Been awhile since i installed it.

"Nietzsche's Right", "Spaghetti Monster Shrine", etc...
At this point I have been playing for six hours and just want the game to end.
