Title: Which municipality in the world has the largest % of native Swedish speakers?
Post by: Slargos on October 08, 2009, 06:46:08 AM
You would assume it would be somewhere in Sweden, right?

Well you would be mistaken.

It is, infact, the municipality of Korsnäs, Finland.

MAKE OF THIS WHAT YOU WILL, UNBELIEVERS.

Well, I guess it's all in how you present reality.  :D

I got the factoid off SVT. Though given their track record for the truth, it might well be a lie.

With 91% native swedish speakers they would be way ahead of the curve, anyway.  :P

Why would anyone care?  It's like asking what town has the largest percentage of Swahili speakers.  The average first worlder is not going to run in to either.

I suppose it doesn't really matter which language Finns choose to use not to speak to each other with

I didn't think Sweden assimilated anything.  I thought they just fled to Norway and cried.

Funny guy.  :P

There are actually still regions in Finland where the first language is Swedish.

After all, the official name of the country is still Suomi FINLAND (Perkele) if needed...
According to Impaled Nazarene at least

I don't hate Finnish people.

They are like a less intelligent, but much more cunning cousin.

Their womenfolk are in my experience great in the sack, and their menfolk make excellent fodder in the meatgrinders of the Karelian forests.  :P

I find it hard to believe that every single community in all of Sweden has 10%+ of it's population unable to speak Swedish.

My über-soldier relative fought in three wars against the Reds.

Oh, and he also fought in wars against the Czar and Hitler.  :)

If slargy's factoid is true (that the town in Finland with 91% on its population speaking Swedish is the highest percentage in the world), then every single community in Sweden must have less than 91% Swedish speakers.  I find that extremely unlikely.

That is not the message. I said native speakers. IE people whose first language is Swedish. I guess I could've been more clear.

And I can't really vouch for the numbers, I just saw a programme on swedish public television about swedish dialects which made the claim.

I don't doubt it though. With 18% of the total population being foreigners.

Do you read case files with the same attention to detail?

Regardless, Tyr's numbers are off.

According to a finnish site it's 96% not 91% which moves from me finding the claim probable to being certain.

:yeahright:

You may have 18% of the population being foreigners, but that population is not evenly distributed throughout every community.

10 years ago, I would've perhaps agreed with your critique, but these days you can't find a city, hamlet, in-house, out-house or dog-house that isn't infested with mudpeople.  :P
