Title: Stargate Universe: First Thoughts?
Post by: Faeelin on October 03, 2009, 06:33:37 PM
Anybody else watch it?

Myself, I am trying to figure out why I should care about any of these people. It seems awful.

I don't know what you are talking about but yes I do find it hard to care.

Since I probably will not see it until one of the terrestrial channels picks it up in a few months, I have no opinion at the moment.

Unlike "Atlantis" however, I will probably give this one a try given the cast list.

Even the synopsis makes me :bleeding:
Atlantis was bad enough.

Sure, Stargate never took itself seriously to begin with (which was much of its appeal) but with Atlantis...I dunno. It kind of did take itself seriously but just ended up cheap and crappy.

I'm actually more of a fan of Atlantis than SG-1. And I'm mighty pissed that they ended Atlantis's run rather abruptly. Seems to me the producers had issues with Atlantis...notice how none of the Atlantis cast was a guest on SG:Universe...or is it SG:Voyager? ;)

Nah, same old guests....even Amanda Tapping is beginning to look a bit worn.

But back to the topic...I'm a fan of the franchise so I'm looking forward to this. But yeah, the cast so far seems rather hmmmm....I guess fat computer nerd is the comic relief guy (see Tu'ulc, Rodney).

It seems rather Voyager doesn't it?

So all they're going to do is fly around and visit new planets from the Stargate on the ship? And then they're going to come across a rather nasty enemy that' destroying everybody ( see Gu'auld, Wraith), and they're gonna have to form alliances etc etc.

Been done before...but we'll see where it leads us. I do like that English actor, the guy from Trainspotting.

The original plot, from about a year ago that I heard made me think it would be beyond horrible.

Its on Hulu (having no cable I do watch some awful things for background noise).  I didn't tihnnk it was as terrible as I was expecting it to be.  All the scifi cliches are there.  I'd hope they manage to make something that doesn't suck too much.

I didn't like Atlantis.  It was boring and lacked the humor that SG1 had.

I watched it. So far I like it. I'm always hoping for more SG shows/series.    :)

I by far preferred Atlantis, and from the sound of the synopsis I don't think I'm going to catch this until it's finished at which point I can either drop it or do a marathon..

I guess I'm gonna have to torrent it from work.

I feel I should force myself through the last series of Atlantis first.
Though that thing is damn hard to get online. The copyright people guard it hard, I got two warnings from two episodes last year.

I thought it was pretty ok. So far I think all of the charachters are dickheads which is a good thing.

The most recent episode was pretty good.

It's obvious they're trying to copy BSG's style. (In four episodes they've only Gated once so far). But given that BSG is no longer on, this is a decent alternative. I like the potential this series has.  But since everything I like tends to get cancelled early on, I don't have much hope.

it was predictable since they weren't going to cut down the cast to 17 people on a hlaf dead planet. still, it was a good episode. As for the BSG feel Josephus mentioned, hopefully that go away now that they can use the stargate again.

Well...of course we knew that everyone would live. But come on...that happens on every show. I thought it was still well done.

On SG1, on Atlantis, et.al., we always knew the team wouldn't die. When the Wraith attacked Atlantis in every season's cliffhanger, we always knew the Good Guys would prevail.

I just though that the episode was well done. Kept my interest. We're getting to know the characters, and there's even a couple nice looking chicks on it, as opposed to just the one. [Tayla/ Carter]

THe BSG thing is getting annoying.  A bunch of assholes stranded on a spaceship isn't fun.  Stargate is` supposed to be action with some humor mixed in.

It works best when the characters know just how stupid the situations are and work their way through it anyway.  That's why Richard Dean Anderson made the show.  Colonel O'Neill always introduced a level of snark that could make even the cheesiest plot entertaining.

This show seems to be looking for that gritty, hopeless stuff.  And at the end it will turn out they go back in time and wander into the wilderness to form the basis for Atlantis in Earth legend or some shit.

I agree that tacking on "Stargate" to the name of a show that clearly doesn't draw inspiration from the Stargate universe is just irritating; far more so than copying BSG's style.  As you point out, Stargate is a completely different subgenre of SF than is BSG.  I know Hollywood isn't famous for guts, but these attempts to "re-write Lovecraft stories into the Diskworld universe" are daffy and doomed.

No, it was stupid.

"Why would our ancient ship low on power be heading towards a sun?"

"DOOM!"

I mean, I would've guessed harvesting fuel for nuclear fusion, but I wouldn't have assumed the AI which already led them to needed resources was spontaneously beaking.

You guys are a tough crowd. Too bad this forum did not exist back when Star Trek Next Generation first started. I can see the comments now:

"This is nothing like the original."

"The Klingons don't even look like klingons."

"Captain Picard? WTF? Surely there would be no baldness by then."

"This whole "Federation of Planets" reeks of Communism."

"Oh come on, we knew the Enterprise would survive that attack. Where's the suspense?"

"A quasi empath? Look you can either sense things or you can't."

"Wot? No gay characters?"....

"Duh....Wesley is gay for sure."

"Are we really s'posed to believe Kunta Kinte would be an engineer?"

"Doctor Crusher is hot."

[Well that last one, would be mine.]

I agree and I think the show has been pretty decent so far.

What is with the Klingons? Remember in the day
They looked like Puerto Ricans and they dressed in gold lame
Now they look like heavy metal rockers from the dead
With leather pants and frizzy hair and lobsters on their head.
