(Re)saw Coalminer's Daughter last night, the Lorreta Lynn story. There are plenty of decent, watchable entries in this genre but I can't think of any that are head and shoulders above the crowd. Anyone have a particular favorite?
Control. 24 Hour Party People.
It would probably be Backbeat.

What/who is Control about? 24 Hour Party People is about a club/recording label owner so that doesn't count.

Ian Curtis/Joy Division.
I haven't seen it myself, but as a bit of a fan of the band I've heard of it.
I think I'm with you that I can't think of a real standout in the genre. I keep coming back to the JOhnny Cash biopic but even that I didn't think was all that great.
Walk Hard.
Amadeus
Yeah, Amadeus.
That is a good call.
I like that one with Jimmy Stewart in it, The Glenn Miller Story.
Yankee Doodle Dandy. I haven't seen many others.

Amadeus
Gotta agree with that one.
The Falco one wasn't too bad, but I don't think that it would score extra-Austrian interest.
Yeah, thought about "Amadeus", too, before seeing people's responses.
"Velvet Goldmine" if you meant "biopic" in the broadest possible sense. ;)

Walk Hard or Amadeus.
this is Spinal Tap.
It's One better.
Sid and Nancy. Not Amadeus :P but it will do.
It's two acts. The first is exuberance, the second is nihilism. Afterwards, you go for pizza.
I liked the Buddy Holly Story too. Gary Busey's best role ever, and the performances are great. IRC, the script is pretty weak though.
almost forgot American Hot Wax . That one is pretty good too.
