Title: The 2016 Olympics Coming To The New World ?
Post by: Armyknife on October 01, 2009, 07:16:18 PM
The venue for the 2016 Olympics is chosen today*, October 2nd, will be be coming to The New World.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic_games/7884296.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic_games/7884296.stm)

I thinks its a straight fight between the Obama effect backing Chicago vs Brazils growing economic and diplomatic presence swinging it for Rio.

Incidentally if Chicago does win, that mean the Olympics will take place at the height of the 2016 presidential election campaign, with it in some ways marking the end of a possible 8 year Obama presidency.  I reckon that would be a rather good back drop to a political thriller, zeitgeist novel ?

*proper time.  :bowler:

I hope it says far, far away. All the world needs is a bunch of Chicagotards with an even more swollen ego.

I'd prefer the Games to be in Brazil, I think. It would be appropriate given the size of their economy and the fact that the Games have never been to South America.

And I believe the bid city is Rio de Janeiro, isn't it? Good scenery never hurts the Olympics for a TV viewer.

Rio would be cool.  I don't know how the athletes are going to compete without their kidneys though.

I don't think Madrid or Tokyo have got many chances.

Choosing Madrid would go against the non written rule that the Games won't take place in Europe several times in a row, respected since 1952. Our time will probably come in 2020 or never.

Tokyo... well, only 8 years after Beijing? Again, I don't think they have got many chances. Personally I would love to see how would the Japanese organize them (high jump for robots under 20 tons? ;) ) but I don't see it happening any time soon.

Probably it's Rio or Chicago, and I think the members of the Committee will feel the pinch that South America has never organized the Games.

Oh, some media in Spain have aired a supposed deal between Rio and Madrid. If one is eliminated, their supporters would vote for the other... but I wouldn't rely on that deal being real (or the committee members feeling compelled to respect such deal if it exists).

I would be happy to see a rule that says the Olympics must not be held in any city that hasn't held it before.  But I am willing to settle for the continent level :contract:

QuoteChicago loses in bid to host 2016 Olympics

In a stunning upset, Chicago was ousted in the first round of voting to host the 2016 Olympics.

Chicago received the fewest number of votes in the first round, despite its star-studded last-minute pitch.
Tokyo was voted out soon after.

The decision caps a competition among four cities — Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo — to host the Games.

Chicago had several well-known lobbyists in Copenhagen. Foremost among them was President Barack Obama, who arrived Friday morning after an overnight flight.

The U.S., Obama told Olympic leaders, "is ready and eager to assume that sacred trust" of hosting the Games.

The president and his wife, fellow Chicagoan Michelle Obama, put their capital behind an enormous campaign to win the Olympics bid. Never before had a U.S. president made such an in-person appeal.

"I urge you to choose Chicago," Obama told members of the International Olympic Committee.

"And if you do — if we walk this path together — then I promise you this: The city of Chicago and the United States of America will make the world proud," the president said.

The four finalist cities have been making their cases to the IOC for more than a year, but many IOC members were believed to be undecided about which city they would vote for Friday. Some said they might not decide until after the cities made their final presentations in Copenhagen.

Michelle Obama, who grew up on Chicago's South Side, had two days of one-on-one meetings with IOC members, whom she assured of Chicago's sincerity to use the Olympics as inspiration for children who might not otherwise have reason to dream big.

One of the IOC members she chatted with on Thursday was former Russian swimming great Alexander Popov. After getting his picture taken with Mrs. Obama, Popov was ushered off to meet with talk show host Oprah Winfrey and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.

Chicago's Olympic bid Photos: Chicago celebritiesdescended on Copenhagen in support of the city's bid for the 2016 Olympics.
Winfrey, who ranks second only to Angelina Jolie on Forbes' Celebrity 100 list, drew lots of attention at the IOC hotel, shaking hands and posing for photos. As she made her way into the restaurant, she chatted up IOC executive board member Gerhard Heiberg and Sam Ramsamy, an IOC member from South Africa.

"Whoever's there, I'll talk to them," Winfrey said.

The bidding process to host the Games began in May 2007. The four finalist cities were named in June 2008. Not making the final cut were Baku, Azerbaijan; Doha, Qatar; and Prague, Czech Republic.

The most recent Summer Olympics to be held in the United States were the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

The 2012 Games are scheduled for London.

I guess you could argue that this would have been of economic benefit to Chicagoland, but we all know graft would have made the project drastically more expensive than it needed to be.

It's not often that conservatives celebrate the U.S. losing out to countries like Brazil and Spain, especially not when the loss involves a prominent event like the Summer Olympics. But when the International Olympic Committee eliminated Chicago as a potential host for the 2016 games in the first round of voting on Friday, the right broke out the champagne.

Good for Chicago for dodging this mess. Would have been an expensive mess,  though the, or we, taxpayers would have wound up bailing them out, while the connected people pulling the strings made big bucks via that corrupt Chicago political machine. Apparently many cities wind up losing money hosting the Olympics.

But it is a great way to raise the profile of a city.

No there is a big difference in profile between the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Indeed.  While the Winter Olympics are huge, the Summer ones read like a copy of Obscure Sports Quarterly, with a crappy basketball tournament tacked on.

Brazil will also host the 2014 Football World Cup. So investments in sport and tourism infrastructure can be spread over two massive events.

There are surely some long faces in Chicago this afternoon after the Windy City was eliminated in the first round of voting to host the 2016 Olympics.

But you're not alone, Chicago. Detroit feels your pain.

Detroit is the city that has failed the most for its bid for an Olympic Games without ever hosting them, according to a story this week by the Economist.

Detroit has failed six times — in 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1972.

The Motor City was also a candidate for the 1944 Olympics before they were ultimately canceled due to World War II.

Los Angeles has also missed out on six bids, but has hosted the Games twice — in 1932 and 1984.

:(

I don't see anything Glenn Becky in KRonn's comment. It's a pretty common criticism of the Olympics.

It's time for your meds, Raz.

Sav, why has it been so long since Detroit made a bid?  Why not try again now?  I mean, soon there will lots of open space on which to build in Detroit, yes? :)

Not only that; there would be records set in the marathon; since the Detroit marathon route takes one through areas that encourages one to run as quickly as possible.

Nah, I heard problems over money spending discussed elsewhere. Being expensive for various reasons, and that isn't something I realized before. I figured Olympic games were a great money maker for a city.

Athens certainly lost money. I think Sydney made money.

Since Beijing was more about politics than sport, I don't think it matters if the Games held there made money or not.

When judging if the Olympics make or lose money, are we talking the local government or the local economy as a whole?

Not just conservatives are happy about it. Chicago would have killed Tahoe's chances for the 2018 Winter Games. Harry Reid is secretly pleased.
