For the record, voted Bad Education.
Only seen the first two on your list and then moved to the 'burbs where they don't show artsy-fartsy Spanish films. but IIRC, Tie Me Up had a cool scene with a chick in a bathtub, so I'll vote that.
Sorry, I have never heard of him or any of his films. Are these foreign films?

Yes. Now, prepare to be flamed for your ignorance.
He's a Spanish director who has a thing for trannies.
I voted "Women on the verge...". Can't stand most of his later stuff, and some of the movies in the list (Kika, I'm looking at you) are tripe.
Verge.... I haven't seen Volver yet tho thx for reminding me.
I loved Volver.
His movies are only know by their Spanish names here.
I saw Habla con ella and Kika. I liked them both.
"Women on the verge .. " is the only one I've actually watched, when I was a kid and there was nothing else on TV (may have been back when there were only 2 channels). I can't for the life of me remember if I liked it or not.
None of his stuff has ever picked my interest. I mostly know him for his political opinions, which are often downright laughable.
Bad Education is the only one I've heard of and I don't think I've seen it.
No idea who this person is. I would suppose, based on the opening post, that he is a homosexual though.
Never heard of him or any of his movies, and from the pics provided I'm ok with that.
Never heard of him. Have heard of Bad Education, but never seen it.

There are two art theatres in Edmonton, but I am unlikely to go to them, due to the contempt in which I hold art that doesn't revolve around dead white guys.
To the people who don't know who he is: well, he is just probably the best known non-English-language director that is still alive and working at the moment.
He discovered Penelope Cruz, too.
Neil: yes, he is a homo.
To be honest, I'm surprised so many people never heard of him. He is pretty big in Poland - I mean not everybody likes his movies, of course, but pretty much all the people I know have heard of him and have seen at least one or two of his movies.
Fame-and-popularity-wise I'd put him around the level of Woody Allen.

Foreign language films are basically unknown here with very very few exceptions like 'Life is Beautiful' and 'Downfall'.

So the only foreign movies you guys see are about Holocaust/nazism? No wonder your views about Europe are so fucked up. :D

I'm surprised too. Even here he's popular enough to be played in multiplexes and even small commercial cinemas, rather than just arty ones.
I think Godard's still more famous :P
Yeah. His last movie, for example (which just hit the cinemas here) is shown in pretty much all the multiplex chains we have, and a lot of non-chain commercial cinemas.

Most stereotypes about Europeans date from the WWII era. Hence why we think you don't bathe and Germany is going to conquer France at any moment.
Those are just the first two I could think of. I don't attend very many movies.

At least I take my opinions about America from news programs and websites, such as the Daily Show, the Colbert Report and The Onion.

Yeah and I also forgot that The Lives of Others and Amelie were at least acknowledged as existing.
Asian martial arts and horror films seem to do good too. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Old Boy, Ring, Battle Royale, etc.

It was a Mexican film.
I have seen none of these movies, but I am aware of Pedro Almodovar's existence.
I like the one with the strong, quirky female characters.
Let's do another thread about which Elie Samaha movie is your favourite. Tough call between Battlefield: Earth and Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever.

Oh, bathe? Sorry, I read "lathe".
On-topic, nigga is obviously very well known in Sweden and I have seen a couple of his movies but that was many years ago.
An older female relative was very upset when Hollywood poached Antonio Banderas.

There was a rather unsettling topic about our northern neighbors and their lack of hygiene on Spanish EUOT a few days ago. :x
He's well known here too. Haven't seen any of his films yet. I do own a copy of Bad Education, must get around to watching it sometime. It was included in a World Cinema DVD 6-Pack that I got a while ago

He ain't exactly a household name, Fagginus. Face it; just because the pillowbiters have embraced his catalogue for whatever reason doesn't mean he's the fag equivalent of the most famous nebbish New York Jew ever.

IIRC, the controversy over the MPAA rating given to
Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down was one of the more notable events that lead to the adoption of the NC-17 rating. Or maybe it was the first movie given the NC-17 rating. At any rate, it attracked a lot of attention (if not actual attendence at theaters :) ) when it first was released here, and I too am surprised that more people don't at least know who Almodovar is.

Wrong, Henry and June was the first, and Showgirls was the worst.

I thought this thread could not become worse from the opening post, which was of course Marty's regular "let's celebrate some gay artisty guy who is well-known in the richest parts of Warsaw" thing. Thanks for proving me wrong by that, Tim.
Ever since I overheard two nerds at work talking about a girl using japanese words to describe her, my disgust of anime has turned into burning hate.
Anime must be cleansed from the galaxy. It is an affront to the Emperor.
Good, good. Turn against Timmayism.
I'd like to toss out there that you can enjoy anime and manga without going the full Animetard.
