Starts Monday 30th March, just a few years late.
But don't worry they're going to put it out on a secondary channel (BBC2) and at 11.20 pm after a news programme, I think it will be run every week night.
That show has been "Next on my List" for a while now.
I really do need to get it, now that I am over the disappointment of Carnivale. Trouble is, I spent my money for this month on El Cid (result of the thread) and the HD-DVD version of Blade Runner (on sale).

Nope. Nary a bit. Very annoying show. To me, at least.

I really wouldn't know, other than what I saw of the first few episodes I just wasn't impressed. But I've been told that the writing got much, much better over time.
But then again, I have a very low opinion of the Baltimore Police Department to begin with.
And David Simon can go fuck himself with a variety of everyday household appliances.

Funnily enough, over here its apparently achieved near cult status amongst the medja/chattering class.
I shall report back on my initial impressions.
By all means, don't let my prejudices interfere with your enjoyment of what everyone seems to say is really sharp TV. I'm just a grudgeholding motherfucker.
I liked the episodes that I saw. It was easy enough to despise the cops in it, so it spoke to my demographic. Especially with the gay gangsta.
I tried it and found it rather meh. Cop shows just generally don't do it for me, the only real exception being Dexter.
Borrowed the box sets (you do need to see the first few in rapid succession to "get" it, I feel) and deliver the verdict: it rocks.
Best TV drama series evah IMO.
Do your British have extra-terrestial TVs? Man, you guys are so advanced.
It provided some hours of good entertainment, and basically highlighted a lot of social problems and offered no solutions (except Bunny Colvin legalising drugs).
"The Wire" was razor sharp at times, and had some very good secondary characters, like Frank Sobotka.
It's a pretty good show.
I love it. I think the BBC are a bit late though. I mean the box sets have been in Amazon's top 10 for ages
I was rather shocked to discover Dominic West (Jimmy McNulty) is very English and very posh on The Today programme this morning. :o
Oh, and Idris 'Stringer Bell' Elba I am now informed by my colleague.

He's an Old Etonian. Stringer's English too.
So...how is it watchable? Is it like what I'm told with Babylon 5 where you have to skip the first series?

It's brilliant. I'm half way through the second series... so far I think the first was better. What I would recommend doing is watching the first three episodes back-to-back so you get a hang on the many plot threads.
Oh, and they're recommending British audiences watch it with the subtitles on

I think the second one is better. I think it's just a remarkably moving elegy of a certain sort of American working class. As well as the good crime plot.

I know you shared the story in person why he annoys you so, but i've forgotten it.
Just got this:
QuoteHi,
I am a producer on Richard & Judy. We have the actor Dominic West on the show and we are looking for fans of The Wire, to explain just why they love the show. We would need people to take part this Wednesday, 1st April from 2pm -4.30pm at our London studios. If you are interested and available please email me at xxx.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Polly
Crap, I'm out of the country on business :(
I have started watching it recently, I'm halfway the first season at the moment and enjoying it quite a bit. Friends of mine have been raving about it for the last month or so, and so far it's living up to the hype, at least for me.
