Title: How many hours of sleep do you get in a typical day?
Post by: Caliga on March 25, 2009, 07:43:34 AM
I post this because I occasionally see people posting at ungodly hours (their time, not necessarily mine  :P ) so I was wondering if the board has any insomniacs.  Personally, I go to bed between 10:30 and 11 most nights and get up at 5, so that's 6-6 1/2 for me.

I used to be properly insomniac for about a year or so about 4 years ago, but I fortunately got out of it. Now, I don't sleep as long as I should, though, simply because the day is just too short.

Here, while on vacation I sleep long, but on my normal work day, I go to sleep around 1:30 a.m. (I go to bed earlier than that but usually watch one or two episodes of some comedy show on cable or DVD) and get up at 7 a.m. (to play WoW before work *blush*). So that's between 5 and 6 hours.

Meaning literally that you could not sleep at all?  I can't imagine that.  I don't get the "proper" eight hours you're supposed to, but if I stay up to 11 I'm about ready to pass out.

Whenever anyone tells me I should sleep more, I quote Napoleon:
QuoteSix hours sleep for a man, seven for a woman and eight for a fool.

Well, I had this thing that unless I, say, was in the bed before 11 p.m. and took a number of precautions (like not drinking coffee after 5 p.m., had a good bath etc.) I would lay sleepless in my bed until 4-5 a.m., unable to fall asleep. This was especially bad on Sunday nights, when I stressed over going to work on the next day and having to get up by a specific hour - which made it even worse.

I still get this occasionally sometimes, but it is never that severe and is much rarer (I used to be like the protagonist on Fight Club for a while - not a nice experience). Three things I learned from this period that helped me a lot were:

1. No matter when you went to sleep eventually, try to always get up early, and more or less at the same hour. You will be sleepy for a day or two, but eventually your body clock will catch up. Don't oversleep.

2. If you are lying there in your bed, in the dark, even if it feels like you don't sleep, you have short naps you don't remember. So don't stress and don't try to do other things (like cleaning your flat or reading a book) because it will only makes it worse.

3. You can't die from insomnia. You can go sleepy for a day or to, but this won't kill you. Eventually your body will catch up.

The worst part about insomnia (especially if it is new for you) is that the more you stress about being unable to sleep, the worse it gets.

I know how you feel. I completely do not understand people who like find it enjoyable to be able to sleep for 10 hours or more - I mean, I barely manage to fit all things that I want to do into the hours I have each day, why lose more to a pointless and unproductive behaviour?

Even if I get back from a party late, I try to get up around 9-10 a.m. (even if it means having slept for 4-5 hours only). There is nothing I hate more than waking up in the afternoon, and thus losing half of the day.

My usual weekend schedule (beginning on Friday night) goes something like that:

Friday

6 p.m.: Leave work (early), buy some booze, maybe go to a barber.
8 p.m.: Get home, get a bubbly bath. Drink some of the booze. Dress up.
10 p.m.: Go to a friend's house (or welcome some friends to mine) for a before-party.
11:30 p.m.: Go out to a club. Dance a bit. Watch a drag queen cabaret. Get ocularly devoured by ugly, short, fat and/or old queens. Ocularly devour some young, hot, handsome queens who never look my way.
1:30 a.m.: Head home. Log on MSN. Talk to Fireblade. :p
2:15 a.m.: Go to bed.

Saturday

8 a.m.: Get up. Make coffee and a toast. Play some WoW.
10:30 a.m.: Set up the washing machine and the dish washer. Go out to a nearby coffee shop for my latte, breakfast and browse Facebook, Languish etc. on my MacBook (the coffee shop has free wifi). Download latest podcast and sync with my iPod.
12:00 a.m.: Go to the gym or shopping for clothes, books and The Economist. Eat out.
3:00 p.m.: Get home. Either get ready for an evening date or play WoW.
6:00 p.m.: If I have a date, go to a coffee shop and meet him. Fall in love. Go to my place. Suck dick. Eat ass. Shrimp. Promise to meet. Never see him again.
9:00 p.m.: Post the AAR on Languish.
9:30 p.m.: Watch some TV or play some more WoW.

Sunday

8 a.m.: Get up. Make coffee and a toast. Play some WoW.
10:30 a.m.: Go out to a nearby coffee shop for my latte, breakfast and browse Facebook, Languish etc. on my MacBook (the coffee shop has free wifi).
12:30 p.m.: Meet my fag hag. Have lunch at some Hard Rock cafe-like place. Get drunk on margaritas.
1:30 p.m.: Go together to the movies, to see Milk or something.
4:00 p.m.: Get out of the movie theatre. Kiss goodbye. Go shopping for fresh food.
5:00 p.m.: Get home. Cook dinner. Open a bottle of red. Watch something on TV or DVD.
7:00 p.m.: Participate in a guild raid on WoW or a Pen and Paper rpg session with some friends via mIRC or have sex with one of my usual fuckbuddies whom I called after the last night's date.
11:00 p.m.: Go to bed.

I am planning to run my own Vampire: The Requiem game with my mIRC circle of gamers - I tried to get our gamemaster to run it, but all he wants is this Dark Heresy game that is based on Warhammer 40k.

My wife had bad insomnia, and eventually she wwent and had this sleep study done, which included 12 hours of therapy from a sleep specialist. Part of her therapy was this process for sleeping consistently.

Oddly enough, she told her the exact opposite. If you lie in bed without sleeping for more than 20 minutes, you get up and do something else. Read a little bit, do a chore, whatever, then go back to sleep. If you do not fall asleep for ten minutes, get up, do something, etc., etc.

She was adamant about always waking up at the same time though. No matter how tired you are, get up at whatever your wake up time is.

Surprisingly (to me) enough, it all actually worked.

Well I didn't consult any specialist so it may not work for everyone. In any case, most insomnia cases (mine included) are based in psychology, so pretty much whatever you convince yourself to work should work. :)

Indeed - the problem is that for most insomniacs, they are just repeating what doesn't work, and have no idea what to do that will work.

So they don't get enough sleep, so they are tired, so they go to sleep earlier and earlier, or get up later and later, but they aren't really fixing the reason they are not sleeping to begin with - which almost certainly has nothing to do with how long they are physically in bed.

Which brings up another thing - bed is for sleeping and sex. Nothing else. No reading in bed, no watching TV in bed. If you cannot sleep and want to watch TV, get up and go watch some TV - but get the TV out of the bedroom.

I am glad I am not an insomniac. I love to read in bed.

Usually around seven hours. I wake up at 7am at the weekends too, but may have an afternoon nap if I've been up late. I get bored lying in. If I have a special friend staying over, I get up, have breakfast and do stuff for a couple of hours and get back in before said guest stirs.

Yeah if I am completely wasted, I usually have an hour-two-hours beauty nap in the afternoon, too, but not unless I have slept for less than 3-4 hours during the previous night.

In bed at 11am or so. Up usually between 6-8am depending on the day.

I fall asleep on the couch in my office around 1pm for 30 minutes to an hour. I don't get my nap, I take it out on someone.

My wife and I don't get enough sleep.

For me, the reason is simple - I have as it were three different lives, and I want to do as much as possible in all three.

1. Life #1 - going to work, plus exercising etc.

2. Life #2 - playing with Carl, reading him stories, giving him his bath, putting him to bed, etc. When I get home this usually takes a couple of hours, plus of course most of the day during those weekend days I'm not working and holidays.

3. Life # 3 - when Carl is asleep, talk over the day with Mrs. Malthus, play computer games, watch movies, read books etc.

Obviously, life #3 eats into sleep time.

QuoteGenesis 19

30Now Lot went up out of Zoar and(W) lived in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to live in Zoar. So he lived in a cave with his two daughters. 31And the firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth. 32Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve offspring from our father." 33So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father. He did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

34The next day, the firstborn said to the younger, "Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine tonight also. Then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve offspring from our father." 35So they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 36Thus both the daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father. 37The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab.(X) He is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38The younger also bore a son and called his name Ben-ammi.[c](Y) He is the father of the Ammonites to this day.

Oh my, I never thought of that.

Glad I could help. :)

Malthus needs to start taking Carl and his wife into work with him.  He can play with Carl during meetings and discuss computer games with his wife in his office.  I smell a promotion in his future.

Shit, I could take Carl to work and say he's a new articling student (sorta like an "intern" for you folks).

He'd be about as much use as the ones we already have .

I tend to get between 6 and 7 hours of sleep on weeknights.  Every once in a while it'll dip as low as 4.

If you cannot sleep and want to watch TV, get up and go watch some TV - but get the TV out of the bedroom.
I find a nice movie while fall asleep to be very relaxing.  I've fallen asleep to 2001 or Conan the Barbarian several hundred times.  That way, in the morning, I can wake up to the Discovery entering Jupiter space.

Nice long stretches of music relax me, although occasionally the sound of HAL killing the scientists wakes me up.

I only need like six hours a day and ten at night, and then I'm good.

A highly erratic number.  Sometimes 3 or 4 hours one night and then 10 hours the next.
Same here.  The worst thing is that after sleeping for 3 hours the previous night, there is an irresisitble temptation to nap in the evening, which just makes the problem so much worse.

Back when you could change your nick at will I thought about taking Lieplund as name again. :P

On topic, when I work morning shifts I get no more than 4-5 hours of sleep (bed around 22-23 and wake around 03-04). Mid-day and evening shifts I get around 8-9 hours.

Especially a Gor book. Nothing like reading about treating women badly before bed.

Why read about it in bed when you can do it in bed?  ;)

Too many rules.
My greatest disappointment after an initial contact with the Gor genre was finding out there are no gay books. :(

Otherwise, the shit is fucking hott. :P

Why were you on steroids?
Crohn's. I was on and off them for a year and a half. It's the only thing I've tried that helps with inflammation. Side effects are very nasty, though.

Vrick, where are the Swedish chicks you ow me? :shifty:

Nah that's other kind of steroids. The only cool side effect of these is they give you tons of energy. I ended up running to buy bread or go to the pharmacy rather than just walking, for example.
The not so good are: you turn into an asshole, you get acne, out of control appetite, cramping, joint pain  ... And the really bad ones (long term): diabetes, glaucoma, osteoporosis ...
And you can't drink alcohol at all, of course.

I'd like to get 8, but I usually only get 6-6:30.

Usually about 7-8 hours.  I do not function if I get less than that, and will very soon develop severe headaches.

My brother in law (who is 2-3 years younger than me) somehow survives with like 5 hours of sleep.  Superman.

Usually around 6.  I post at weird times because I usually get home from work around midnight, stay up till anywhere from 3 AM to 6 AM, then go to be for 6 hours or so.
