Title: Torontonians, to me!
Post by: Sophie Scholl on September 10, 2009, 01:44:50 AM
So... I'll be visiting your fair city a little late for the Official Languish Meet , but I will be there next week.  I'll be going to the U2 show on the night of the 17th with female accompaniment.  I'll probably be going out early in the day the 17th and then hotel-ing it up that night.  I have no plans really for the rest of the week, and will either remain in Toronto for a few days more or head back to Buffalo depending.  Are there any special events going on that week?  Any cool exhibits?  We're thinking of hitting up the Toronto Zoo probably the next day, as we both enjoy zoos, plus... they have hyenas!  Excitement.  Anyway, what did ya'll find was worth  while or not worthwhile to do during your meetup?  Any particular bars or restaurants to go to or to avoid?  Also, if anyone wants to meet up for a beer or food or something, feel free to let me know.  I'm sure I can talk her into meeting a random company of people I've never met in person before.

Friday (the Day after U2) should be doable for some drinks if you want to meet up in the central/downtown area. and it's still patio weather.

... there's lots to do in this town. :)

the Zoo is in deep scarberia, so I'll pass.

AGO was nice.

Everest's Free Tibet platter is worth having just for the name.

Sounds workable Sask.  I'm glad someone is brave enough to meet me!  You'd think I were Siege or something.

I'd meet you but a French Canadian isn't allowed to visit Toronto twice in the same season.

I'm sure we can get HVC as well. he just needs to be prodded. :)

Joe commutes and Mal is family man, so their schedules are tighter.

anyhow, my budget is tight,  but there are some good cheap watering holes around. authenticity is free.

Cheap works for me Sask.  Maybe try that pizza place you were talking about for a bite?  Is there a "Toronto" food or something particularly Canadian to seek out that they do well?  GF, I understand, you're afraid of Toronto, it's ok.

there's lots of cheap good food around. there's some very good sicilian pizza near downtown (Dundas  pizza is in the west end), as well as lots of falafel joints, shwarma, kosher, sushi, really whatever you want.

do you know what hotel you'll be in? I'll see if I can come up with a rough proposal for stuff (food & beer) to do in your hood. :)

we can also do some deathmarching. of course. if we're downtown maybe we can coordinate with Joe around his TIFF schedule.

I'm definitely interested in trying Dunda's if it isn't too far.  Death marches should be ok.

Dundas is a long street and Dundas Pizza is west end. fear not, there are great slices on Spadina as well.

and so...

Met up with  Judas and the Photographix Nurse at their hotel down at King and Spadina. Judas is BIG so easy to recognise. Early afternoon, it looked like a nice day. We didn't have a plan, and they had just eaten, so we started a death march.

We followed gravity's pull down to the waterfront, and worked our way across. We checked out an odd concrete golfball installation, and then saw the ferry. Good idea, we bought our rides and took it to the Island...which is a nice place.

We walked around, chatting about Toronto, Utica, Saskatchewan  and Everyone Who Was Worth Mentioning on Languish. We walked up to the north pier, were robbed by Pepsi-cola, then checked out the hobbit-like cottages on the island. Then we found a little nature walk, saw some monarch butterflies and some cool flowers. Judas remarked on the trees.  We then doubled back, checking out the boardwalk and safety gear. We saw another odd art  installation: it was a strip of faux boardwalk placed on the boardwalk... apparently it was supposed to be "sonic." Not Impressed.

Photographix Nurse took pictures of everything. There was some good afternoon light so some of them had promise.

Waiting for the ferry, we forgot Oldman's name. I remembered it today, so he gets the call out. Photographix Nurse was amused by our conversations, as she had no real idea who or what the hell we were talking about... and she was Fine with that.

Good woman. ;)

We crossed back, in time for Toronto rush hour. Death march was about 4 hours (with some ferry-sitting-time). We retrieved their vehicle, then spent an half hour trying to drive 6 blocks. Once we got to the Lakeshore, we split from the commuter nonsense and drove open roads to the west end.

(laptop keyboard skips, must rewrite, Part II to come)

So for now, I'll throw in the shot of Sask and I.  I leave it you to figure out which one of us is which.  I'll probably throw in a few more shots from the randomness we saw later.

The man is big. It's a good thing he works in the service industry. I understand that field gets unruly when alcohol is involved.
