The reason you thought that is because Trump has repeatedly stated that to be the case. It's one of the weirder Trump lies because he has repeated it so often (at least four times). The birth certificate proves otherwise and has been shown on-air each time he lies about it. Is this senility, or just obvious lying for the sake of obvious lying?

Honestly this sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole - because my immediate thought was that FDR was very important. And then that actually all the combatant leaders were really important.
And now I'm just wondering if WW2 is the last outpost of great man history and the extent to which any of them really mattered?

I think that FDR's unique contribution was his persistence in insisting on aiding the UK before the US got involved in the war, despite considerable political pressure to do otherwise. I am not aware of any other politician with the stature and the willingness to violate both the US and international laws on neutral behavior in a cause that, in retrospect, was crucial to the outcome.
