Title: 1776 - 250 Years On - Celebrations and Taking Stock?
Post by: mongers on January 11, 2026, 10:04:02 PM
This year marks 250 years on from the start of the war of independence, what are the celebrations going to be like?

What should happen and how much of them will the trumpists take over?

How much will the public and individual take stock and reflect upon the political situation.

IIRC the 1976 celebrations seemed quite restrained and well done, perhaps because of the hangover from Vietnam and Watergate.

The only thing I recall is seeing an F111 (?) with an elaborate paint job at some US airbase, I think it might have been when we were on holiday in Oxfordshire/somewhere in the East of the country?

My bet for worst event will be a push by the trumpist for trump's phizog to be added to Mount Rushmore or a nearby cliff-side/mountain?

I guess even after 250 years, Latin American-isation of the political system is just one charismatic bad actor away.

1876 was a fragile time with a political crisis brewing in the Presidential election that year, the conflict over reconstruction, and a major financial depression that had started in 1873.

This celebratory year feels similar.

It feels like a really awful and dangerous time to be celebrating America. I don't envy the folks I worked with for the NPS at the F&I/American Revolution historic fort who are having to navigate it all.  :(

I am old enough to remember the celebrations in 1976 - those were joyous events and turned me into quite an admirer of Americans.

I don't think the celebrations being held now will have the same effect.

Yeah, I'm worried about the Riefenstahlesque tinge they're going to have under the current regime.  Football games have gotten bad enough over the past 25 years.
