Casey Hudson? Now you have my attention.
Action RPG? Single player? Spiritual successor to KOTOR? Ok.
Is it really five years away from release? Come on guys they made KOTOR 2 in about two weeks.
"Five years away" = vaporware that can potentially get cancelled anytime.
After so many failed Star Wars videogame projects I'm old and bitter.
I really do not understand why a single player RPG would require that much time to make unless they are developing the engine from scratch.

The engine, probably not. They'll likely use one on the market.
But, they need a full story with scripts, full motion video capture, sound stage production (Celed is the expert here) on top of designing all the game, the art and the coding.
Look at the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. The original game has 5 years already.
The sequel officially entered pre-production in May 2025 and is not expected until late 2030, 2031. They announced the game in 2022 and they will be using Unreal Engine 5.
They've really been building their team since 2022...

Not necessarily, but yes, there is a high risk of cancellation with SW videogames. Shareholders are impatient pricks.
It's still withint standard development time for a modern video game.
Casey Hudson was project lead on KotOR and Mass Effect. But he was company director for Anthem and Veilguard. So I will wait for more information before getting excited. :D

True...but he was only director for a portion of those games developement. Granted each of those games was in development for about 8 years.
It is kind of crazy how long it takes to make games now. Dragon Age 2 and KOTOR 2 were both made in such a ridiculously short period of time. Like I barely felt like I was done with Dragon and KOTOR when they came out.
Yeah, but both suffered from being rushed (DA2 reusing assets like crazy, KotOR2 cutting tons of content and being buggy ... also, it was done by Obsidian, not Bioware) - an extra year or two and they might have been even better than they ended up being (and when was the last time you played KotOR 2 without restoration mod :D ).

Sure. They were still loads better than anything Obsidian or Bioware had made in awhile though.

Fallout: New Vegas disagrees with respect to Obsidian.

That is Obsidian's best game -_-
It also came out 15 years ago...and also had a very short development cycle. 18 months.
There's Pentiment which is very niche, but I haven't played it yet. I occasionally start Outer Worlds again, but I just can't get through it. It's very video gamey (let me just close this door so I can steal your stuff, or hide behind a tiny corner to pick this lock so I can get into your store room) and the HAHA CAPITALIST EXPLOITATION joke stretches a bit thin even in the opening act. I love the Gilded Age in Space setting, but it could have done with a bit of subtlety. Or better voice acting.
But they also made Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 which were excellent.
