I think it's silly and mildly annoying but not terribly high on the list of world problems.
I hear a vocal fry in both men and women. And I find it very annoying whenever I hear it.
Anglos spend their time on the weirdest shit.
Who's opening this front in the culture war? And who is on which side?

 :pope:
I hate it when my mic picks up sibilance. Like obsessively. Way over the toppedly.
I did find it fascinating that the Notebook LM generated podcast feature had vocal fry

I'm on the "IDGAF about vocal fry, it doesn't bother me at all" side. So I expect everyone else in the world will be on the "argue vehemently about vocal fry all the time" side.
I never knew there was a name for this. I always got the impression the person was just really superficial, and one of those living my champagne lifestyle on instagram types.
I notice it from both genders. A (male :P ) project manager in South Africa does it all the time on calls and I find it quite annoying. :D
I thought we already had a fight over this years ago.
I personally don't mind it.

Take it up with Yi. He's the one claiming it is a battleground. From the thumbnails, I've no idea what his first video is but the 2nd appears to be a clip from daytime TV.
First clip is from the show Loudermilk. I thought first season was pretty good, but it dropped off after that. I do love Ron Livingston being a sarcastic curmudgeon (Office Space, Band of Brothers ... ), so that was a plus for me. YMMV :P
It looks like a decade ago, CBS News was all about vocal fry:

Never really noticed it, though I'm sure I've heard it. It's funny though, every few decades a new hate for voice stuff seems to happen. Everyone hated valley girl talk for a while.
Like, fer sher
We had a thread on this 13 years ago!

Interesting, I would not have thought it started that long ago. I didn't encounter someone using a vocal fry until three years ago.
Annoying but not more than that I guess
I remember when years ago I had a throat infection and my voice was super-creaky. Women told me they found my voice so sexy, I wish I got that infection again :(
I always associate that manner of speech with old-timey British villains, now I learn that somehow it has turned into yet another "let's bash women for something" battleground.

I have known a few vocal fry people my whole life. Though I did not know that word back in the olden analog times.
I definitely remember this being something the internet was obsessed with back around 2014 or so.
There's a new guy at work and he has some of the worst vocal fry I've ever encountered... it's so bad I try to avoid talking to him and just have him IM/email me since it's like fingernails on a blackboard to me. I can tolerate it just fine from most people, too... it's just so extreme in this guy's case.

Go all Loudermilk on his ass, and send us the video.
What? Nobody is going to mention the upspeak menace? This is intolerable, especially when done by males.
Also, since we're on the subject of intolerable speech patterns, what the hell is going on with the Swedish language and the new whimsical garden gnome sound? Like WTF, what is going on? :hmm:
What the hell are you talking about? Swedish language? What kind of nonsense is this?
So does Tom Waite qualify or is he given an exemption due to artistic merit?

I'm making fun of The Brain, etc, regarding certain Swedish morphological sound changes that sound to the outsider just like...and I just killed the joke. :(

It's a mercy killing.

Yeah.
What is a good Korean song you like?
 There are no good emojis for "I listened 2 times and really liked it" :hmm:
Sheilbh, you're up next, has to be semi-folksy!
