Thanks for the article.
Death count up to 11, which makes it one of the worst mass killings in Canadian history.
Sounds mental health related based on prelim statements. Seems like as soon as these car ramming attacks started happening more and terrorist and mentally ill got the idea into their heads.
Yet unlike with other avenues of attack they do little to protect against it.
It shouldn't even be that expensive. More pedestrianised areas protected with bollards, planters, etc...
Horrid anyway. I wonder if it really was a random crazy or something racist going on.
You would think all street festivals should have a barrier erected.

According to radio reports, apparently the barriers had been in place, but they were being taken down to facilitate people leaving.
This may have been a premeditated act.

So the fucker just waited until that moment. Goddamnit.
Really awful. Police have ruled not terrorism. Authorities have also said they do not want to cage festival people in their own city.
So this is just second hand stuff obviously, but my understanding is:
- The most likely explanation is a mental health crisis gone wrong.
- There were some barriers in place, but it's likely that it wouldn't really have helped. Apparently the suspect was assumed to be part of the clean-up/tear-down crew when he arrived in his car.
Separately, apparently the Black-Eyed Peas played at the street festival. That's pretty heavy hitting entertainment for this sort of thing in Vancouver.
A collogue lives a block away, and the only reason she was not there (for the food trucks she explained) is because her parents, who were visiting her, said they would rather not walk in the crowd.
So they're saying mental health crisis... But it also sounds really planned out. Timing things right and understanding just what to do.
It sounds off.

Well that's this usually dismissable as silly attitude vindicated.

I think Josq is saying "I don't want to walk in the crowds, let's stay home" is a silly attitude, but in this case it got vindicated.

Ah, thanks for the translation - he might be a bit more sympathetic when I explain her parents are elderly and one has difficulty walking.

That's what he was saying, but his take was silly. There's nothing absurd about not wanting to try to get around through a crowd.
