Title: (Un)natural disasters megathread
Post by: Syt on January 08, 2025, 01:52:27 AM
No, not about the early 90s WWF tag team, but a megathread for various disasters around the world.

We had the earthquake in China, killing over 100 people: https://www.voanews.com/a/rescuers-search-for-survivors-after-china-earthquake/7929232.html

And California is burning. Again.

QuoteSummary
  • Los Angeles declares a state of emergency as a wildfire explodes from 10 acres to more than 2,900 acres in mere hours
  • Fire chief Kristin Crowley says more than 30,000 people are under evacuation orders, and 13,000 buildings under threat
  • Footage shows houses on fire in the Pacific Palisades area and residents abandoning their cars to flee the flames
  • The fire broke out about 10:30 (18:30 GMT) on Tuesday and it exploded in size, fanned by 50 mph (80km/h) wind gusts and incredibly dry conditions
  • Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone says the Pacific Palisades is "not out of danger"
  • A second brush fire has also started quickly spreading above Altadena, near the Eaton Canyon, about 40km (26 miles) inland from the Palisades
  • Millions of people in California are under a red flag warning, meaning there is an extreme fire danger

Does there come a point when some of these types of disaster become 'routine', as the californian leader said the Santa Anna wind/fire season was now a year round thing?

That point has already arrived.  1 in 100 year events are happening every couple of years.

When will the GOP claim that the Democrats control the snow and the fire like they do hurricanes?

I'm pretty sure if you look around you'll find people claiming the fires are staged.

By the way, I have snow to sell in my yard.

For some reason this sounds like upper-middle class code for cocaine dealing.

Not quite the same, but Marjorie Taylor Greene is asking for the government to use its weather control machine to stop the fires in LA.
MTG suggests cloud seeding could stop LA wildfires months after implying it was used to create hurricanes (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/marjorie-taylor-greene-cloud-seeding-california-wildfires-b2678724.html)

At least, she's not talking of Jewish Space Lasers.  It's an improvement.  I guess...
