Talking with a friend of mine tonight about the kinds of movies neither of us will watch. We both agreed that pretty much any type of horror was right out (and they included Hallmark holiday movies in that genre ). I added intensely emotional dramas, like Sophie's Choice and Prince of Tides. Both cause nightmares for me. My friend just dislikes horror.
Are there any types of movies you prefer not to watch? Which ones?
Horror, movies based on games, and driving cars fast movies.
It's easier to list the movie genre I would watch.
But Horror is right out. Being scared is not something I enjoy.
Horror is out for me as well.
I love horror.
I don't usually enjoy big, dumb comedies or rom-coms.
I won't watch horror in the theatre, but I like it at home. Any driving movie or heist movie I can't stand. DC movies (unless directed by James Gunn)

Yeah, that's pretty out for me, too. Though I do love a good rom-com.

How can you not like heist movies?
I've tried to like them. I find their either easily predictable or my mind wanders because I lose interest.
I'm not really big on comic book movies. I can buy that an alien would come to earth, be able to pass as human, shoot lasers out of his eyes and decide to fight for truth, justice and the American way, but I can't accept that he would dress like a rodeo clown to do it.

Well, they are rather formulaic. I'm ok with them though.
Action movies are starting to bore me.
I don't think I have a "never" genre. There are genres, however, that I will watch even if the movies themselves are mediocre - because the genre itself entertains me (i.e. sci-fi, thrillers), and genres I will only watch if the movies are good (romance, drama).
Horror is iffy. Usually they're dull but a good one can be enjoyable. They need some kind of decent concept that usually takes them in more of a Sci fi /fantasy direction. I tend to be more into lore and explanations than cheap thrills.
I don't think there's a genre I'd never watch. Flat romance I guess, though a decent rom com is acceptable.
I'm not sure what the genre is called but I guess hard man movies are out? At first 20 years ago when they were a new thing they were fine. But now they're so formulaic and just ooze toxic masculinity nonsense. Chopper vs The Firm sort of thing.
One of the good things about horror is that the movies are often 80-90 minutes.
I can't really think of a hard no genre for me. Well, maybe the kind of artsy this-is-about-me-not-the-audience movie that should have been a diary entry or something instead of a movie. But since these movies are never observed outside of pretentious film festivals they rarely pose a problem.
For me, any really high quality film should be able to transend the limits my bias against the various genres I don't like.

Yes. I love horror personally.
I'm not sure there's a genre I dislike enough to avoid. I don't rush to go and see Marvel or get super-excited by them, they're very much films I'll watch on a plane or when they pop up on a streamer especially with the later films (I also wonder if Ukraine might reduce the appetite for films that routinely level urban environments at the climax).
I tend to be pretty picky with comedies. Because there's nothing worse than sitting for two hours watching a comedy you don't find funny
Adam Sandler movies. And other comedies.
I usually avoid sports movies. I often like horror but not the overtly gory type, which I try to avoid.
I'm fine with horror movies based on atmosphere and tension, your classic gothic kind of stories with haunted houses ghosts and monsters and the like. I'm not fine with horror movies of the slasher kind, based more on mass murders, gore and violence.
I also have a very low tolerance for cringe or gross-out humour.
I've never watched a Marvel Comic movie. Never will.
But also, Roma. Remember that academy award winner from a few years back?

Yes - I agree. I love horror as a genre and that can include gore to a level. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a film I like a lot (and Men, Women and Chainsaws was probably the first book of criticism/theory I ever read). But I have no interest in torture porn films like the Saw or Eli Roth franchises.

Yeah with the torture type I'm like I can just look at the news if I want to despair about humanity. I don't really need fictional takes.
So I guess the Languish least-favoured movie would be *The Human Centipede* - but it's a romantic comedy? 😉
Oh now I'm interested. Would 100% watch Nora Ephron's Human Centipede.

Nah,
The Human Centipede sequels. :P

 I love Carol Clover. Read her first in grad school as a specialist of medieval Scandinavia. Discovered only later that she also wrote about horror movies.
I won't say never to any specific genre of movie.
But yeah - horror. Not really my bag, generally speaking. Not something I'll seek out.
And though it's more a tv genre than movies - but cringe comedies, ala The Office and the like. Just makes me feel uncomfortable, not humorous.
I'm at a loss for sitcoms that don't get the bulk of their humor at a character's expense.

I also can't handle cringe humour, the reason why I've never been able to get into The Office. Even if it might be more common in TV than in the cinema, you still have almost anything by Sacha Baron Cohen, that I can't watch either else I die of sheer cringe.
Cringe humor I can watch (heck, I love the first Borat), but not in a theater. I need to be able to stop it and resume later to recover from cringe overload.

I'm with you on his comedies, but Adam Sandler is a superb actor on his serious drama films.

The Human Centipede gave us this work of art, so I'm fine with it:
To add:
Canadian movies.
Okay, add cringe comedies in with stupid comedies.
I hate comedies - or any movie - where there's a butt of jokes that's a major story line. Like BB, it just makes me uncomfortable and isn't funny at all.

You might say that this clip *is* a romantic comedy based on Human Centipede ...
:D
I don't watch movies based on books I likke unless I see reviews stating that the movie follows the book.
I don't watch movies based on book series (and don't read book series for the most part).
Don't care for shock horror or gore horror, but slow-building horror is good. The best horror movie ever done, IMO, was The Haunting and you never actually saw anything scary (but it was scary as shit).
I agree that comedy that is just mockery is usually unfunny, except in special circumstances like the first Borat movie. ROMCOMs can be good, but there, again, I will wait for the review.
I'll watch pretty much any movie directed by Clint Eastwood or Ron Howard.

Yeah Sacha Baron Cohen stuff.....can't stand it.
and speaking of The Office...really anything with Ricky Gervais. I can't stand him.
Centipede means a unit of 50 Roman soldiers. Ignorant swine.
I usually won't watch horror movies... not because I find them scary, but because they are almost always total trash these days. I love a lot of the classic horror films, like The Exorcist, The Shining, The Thing, The Fly (not sure why they all have 'The' in the title :hmm: )
Period dramas that really wish they were Game of Thrones. Now that is some cringey shit.

It depends how they want to be got I'd say. Gritty and plotty could work. I've got a few of those on my list to watch someday. Quite a lot of foreign stuff on Netflix that seem interesting.
On the other hand the tudors style "look, the King is having sex whilst he talks about his plan!" then no thanks.

I know I started off the 'no cringe humour' thing, but I thought Borat was really damn funny. The naked wrestling scene had me laughing uncontrollably.
I've been thinking about this, and I think there's few types of movies I'd rather not watch, even if only to see how bad it really is - I feel cringe comedy might be one. Oh, and movies in the vein of Kevin Sorbo's God's Not Dead.
I think we'll all agree that Alien is the exception to the horror movie rule.

Yup
That would really be a problem if there were still real action movies.
As for me, romantic comedies unless it's classics as Breakfast at Tiffany's.
I don't get the hate at Horror films even if the current Horror porn trend is tiresome.
Talkies.
:P
No more John Woo, or Casablanca, or Citizen Kane for you? :(
Oh also, a recent addition to the list, but any film with a hint of Jared Leto "acting" :bleeding:
