Question:
You can only have one in addition to a main. Which?
Option 1: Starter
votes: 24
Option 2: Dessert
votes: 8
Truly the most important question of our time.
Oh my! :o
I'd rather have both than a main to be honest
I'd rather have an APPETIZER.
Merica, hell yea!
Never been much of a dessert guy.
Definitely an appetizer type of guy but I've had my fill of dessert every now and then
Dessert is the best part of the meal. "Starters" are mere distractions from the main course.
They create empty calories and call it dessert. :(
I get it. :nerd:
More likely to get an appetizer.
Null vote.
Pudding of course. :bowler:
Assuming there was only one restaurant and that one restaurant only provided one or the other, I would first open a competing restaurant. But while waiting for construction to be completed, I would order an appetizer followed by my main. I would then order another appetizer and call it dessert to vex them and to complete my three course meal.
As long as no one is calling the main, entrée, everything will be fine.
I only realised it meant main course in the last year or two

That always confused the hell out of me since in Catalan/Spanish starters are called "entrant"/"entrante".
Strange quirk of history.
I can't remember the last time I saw "entree" on a menu. Usually they break it into categories: soups, salads, appetizers, seafood, steaks, pasta, etc.

I'd say an entree is a dish that can be served as the main course.
Entrails are a main course.
I admit that I avoided opening this thread for a full 24 hours because I've raised four children who loved this game just to see how quickly they could gross each other out.
I'm pleased to see that no insects or other wiggly things were included in the list.
I voted appetizer/starter.

I was thinking about where I would expect the word to pop up, and I think it's most common in pot lucks.
"Do you need more entrees?"
"No, we're set, bring a dessert or side dish."
So kind of agreeing with you.
No good meal is complete without an entrée.
Cant't remember where to place the norman québécois hole though (maple syrup whiskey shooter instead of calvados). Is it before or after the sorbet?

I've stopped ordering starter and main together, so I can skip to dessert if the starter is substantial enough.
For me it's starter all the way. Would rather have a second starter (a finisher) than a dessert 9 times out of 10.

Americans.
Starter. It is reasonably easy to buy good dessert from elsewhere. A good restaurant quality starter is more difficult to replicate.
starter, because sugar is not a food.
Starters/appetizers. Only cuisine that would give me pause on that answer is Greek, because I'd be hard-pressed to choose between spanakopita and baklava- savory and sweet fillings go equally well with filo dough.
