Title: Eurovision 2021
Post by: Liep on May 21, 2021, 02:22:31 PM
Outrageous that Denmark didn't qualify but life goes on, at least the bookmaker favourite has a Danish word as their name.

Running order in the final with recaps:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LI0mFK6JDU

My top 10:
Ukraine
France
Switzerland
Iceland
Lithuania
Russia
Greece
Portugal
Sweden
Serbia

Ukraine with their bizarre folk song/rave crossover is my song for this year. Denmark wuz robbed with their 80's homage, Norway bores and annoys me, Sweden this year, as they always do, sent this sturdy and dependable Volvo song (7.1 out of 10). Finland is running their inexplicably endearing version of Limp Bizkit.

France might place unexpectedly well this year.

Our homegrown talent is benched on the big night because one of the background weebles caught covid either en route or in the hotel they're staying at, despite being vaccinated 10 days previously.  :hmm: We're reenacting Will Ferrell's Eurovision underdog story.

Ukraine is awesome. :D France is very French, in a good way.

Rest is meh. Azerbaijan should get booed.

Overall competition is pointless to watch with neither Poland nor Hungary.

Saw all of one and half of the second semi-final.

I don't think I can recall a single song; I think "meh" is an excellent way to describe this year's entries.

So Graham Norton introduced the British entry as a hugely successful songwriter.

He should have stuck to what he knew.

If any of the other songs so far had stuck in my head at all I'd say we were looking at "nul points". Poor singing with obvious breath control problems at times.

[Norton's biggest bit of praise for him - "fantastic staging"- I didn't look up from my computer so I didn't see any of it, just listened to the music.]

Edit: Whereas the next song, Greece, has actually made me look over at the TV for a minute. Much better sound.

If I actually listened to any music outside of the Eurovision contest for most of the last 20 years I might understand what you were talking about.

"Much better sound" is hardly grand praise though, and I only looked over once.

The Swiss guy was a good singer from what I heard - needed a better song, but may do well.

I'd have preferred the UK to win rather than Italian zombie 90's grunge. Even the Maltese zeppelin or the Belgian boomers would have been preferable. :hmm:

But it was great nevertheless, the Dutch were absolutely fantastic hosts and a harbinger of the much better things to come.

Just finished the livestream. The 3 public zeros were hilarious. Italy's a good winner, keeping bad Franco writing at bay. Good showing by the great songs of this contest, Iceland and Ukraine.

Looking forward to 2022. Hopefully, someone hires a Canadian for a sure shot at victory.

Pretty meh about Italy winning. I'm all for profoundly decadent rock tunes winning Eurovision, but this one was quite vanilla.

Also, France should've won. It's the kind of song I'd expect to be unironically used in an Almódovar movie which is peak Eurovision-worthiness to me.

Yeah it's a perfectly serviceable rock song but every one-album half-amateur bands have one like it.

I checked Italy song.
Its weird. Doesn't match how they look.
But seems alright.
Its notable when a country does something proper and non eurovisionny they win. Yet they keep sending europop crap.
Iceland should have won though. Apparently they couldn't take part so had to send a recording?

Yeah they just got out of quarantine after one contestant got covid. ESC used a recording from their second rehearsal.

Bit of online goss:
QuoteAn audit has been opened into how Malta spent its €650,000 Eurovision publicity budget. There's mounting suspicion that a significant chunk of it was used to place big bets on their own entry in order to improve its odds.
:hmm:

Malta is becoming one of the most corrupt countries in the world  :(

There's nothing they do anymore that doesn't smell of something odd.

It's an awful employment of public moneys, but it's probably an effective move when you think about it coldly  They successfully generated a narrative that Malta was one of the frontrunners.
