Title: Party Polarization Quiz
Post by: Savonarola on August 09, 2019, 02:48:52 PM
From the New York Times:

QuoteQuiz: Let Us Predict Whether
You're a Democrat or a Republican
By Sahil Chinoy
AUG. 8, 2019

Tell us a few details about you and we'll guess which political party you belong to. It shouldn't be that simple, right? We're all complex people with a multiplicity of identities and values. But the reality is that in America today, how you answer a handful of questions is very likely to determine how you vote.

This quiz, based on recent surveys with more than 140,000 responses, presents a series of yes-or-no questions to predict whether someone is more likely to identify as a Democrat or a Republican. It captures divisions that should make you worried about the future of American democracy.

Quiz and the rest of the article (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/08/08/opinion/sunday/party-polarization-quiz.html)

I got +29 Republican; I self identify as an independent.

My unquenchable masculinity pushed me into Republican territory.

I'm not a Republican.

+46 Republican. Whatever that means.

I'm guessing the higher the result, the bigger the likelihood of being either D or R. The only things that moved me towards R were being a straight white male.

Actually in US political terms that is what we use to talk about margins of victory in elections now that I think about it. That a district usually votes +12 R or whatever.

So I guess that means if I was in a Congressional District of just my peers we would vote for the Republican by a 46% margin.

Same here, which is about right.

+46 Republican. Whatever that means.

It means you're a straight white male Catholic who thinks religion is important, is 40+ and has never been in a union.  More seriously, it means (if I did the math correctly in my head) that people with that demography have about a 71% chance of being republican, or about 46 points higher than the 48%-52% base split (71%-29% instead of 48%-52%).

Yeah I think the reason I am 90%+ more Republican than you and Syt is because I said religion is important to me. Or both of you have been in Unions.

I only wish the Hispanic/Latinos were that Democratic here in Texas. They are about +10 or so Democrat in most elections.

It's the religion.  You get totally different questions after that but you're almost guaranteed to be on the Democratic side after that question.

It is interesting that positions are in fact that predictable based strictly on non-political (on their face) factors.

You know what is really alarming about this?

Religion. What moves the needle the most for me is religion.

This suggests, at first pass, that the Republicans are not the party of bigots or anti-immigrants, or low taxes, but really just the party of religion.

I don't think that is because they have any policies (other than abortion) that are actually religiously motivated. But just that they appeal to the things that religion appeals to, and not the thoughtful, spiritual, things....

Not that interesting.  There are a couple of core ideological issues that underlie the parties these days, which are logically connected to identity, and then a bunch of add-on political issues that just happened to gravitate to one party or another.  These add-on issues are either tangentially related to the core issue by disparately impacting one side more than the other, ended up in the party due to a political calculation by the party leaders, or just wound up there by accident of history.  The one outcome of partisanship is that the add-on issues have become fused to the core ideological issues.

I don't find that surprising either.  In pretty much the whole world, religion is allied with authoritarianism, traditionalism, and hostility to critical thinking, and that goes hand-in-hand with bigotry.  Low taxes are a pure add-on item, a result of alliance between plutocrats and bigots, as well as the association of big government with handouts to non-whites.

To be fair, the model they have is not perfect.  A perfect model would give +100 D or +100 R to everyone who answers the questions.  Given that it's not a perfect model, other questions could've also been useful to refine the statistical power of the model, but they focused on just the identity questions to prove a point.
