Title: Are you your father's son (or daughter?)
Post by: Faeelin on July 10, 2009, 08:09:20 AM
One thing I've noticed, as I've become older, is how much like my father I am. Humor, looks (which, given how he now looks, makes me quasi-suicidal), interests, and increasingly personality. It has come very much to my attention recently that while both he and I don't generally speaking hold grudges, when we do get angry at someone we would like to sip the marrow from their bones in the ashes of all they hold dear.

So I'm curious. How much are you like your father? And how does it make you feel?

I'm A LOT like my father, both in looks (although I'm much taller than him), personality and tastes, and people who know him usually recognize me immediately, which is a bit of a nuisance since we work in the same field and getting a "So you're XXX's kid, right?" before a meeting is not exactly enjoyable. For some traits, it's an honour to be like him, for others it's cringe-worthy, as at least for one thing it's something we always call him on in the family.

I only wish I was.  My father has an incredible work ethic and gets things done with stunning speed and efficiency.

I, on the other hand, post on languish all day.

I am not particularly like my father; but then, he had a very unusual upbringing.

Yes. Yes I am.

With a couple exception like He avoids confrontation, I jump into it like a Shark on a bleeding seal.

facially, there is some resemblence; in build and health, I am not like him.

but I like beer, cheese, afternoon naps, books and sometimes workaholism. That's some of his influence.

Yeah, very much so.  Both civil servants.  Both are cheapskates.  Both are pretty extreme introverts.  Both hate asking for help.

My father: genius, flawed, but genius.

I am: not

A few months ago, my dad showed me a personality evaluation he'd taken for his job some 30 or 40 years ago.  I might as well have been reading about myself.

That's a giant fuck no.

We both have the big jew noses but completely different personalities and opinions. He's super closed minded, doesn't like black people, hates gay dudes and ladies,  redneck, and a weakling controlled by his woman.

I am the opposite.

No, thank god. I don't look or act a thing like my father, and that's good because the world only needs one of that schmuck. <_<

Lol...well okay that could have been phrased better. I'd like to think I wear the pants in this relationship but it's probably about equal.

A bit.
I noticed last year in uni that I ended up seemingly knowing everyone- or rather everyone knowing me. I always used to joke about my dad knowing the whole town.
No clue why. Just...worked out that way.
Also the whole starting something and not finishing it before going onto the next thing is something I defiantly got from him.

Looks wise not really. My sister takes more from him. I've no clue who I look like.

No, I'm my mother's son.

Well I am to.  I take after her and her side of the family very strongly.  Actually I am very similar to her brother.

She has an absolutely horrible sense of direction and unfortunately past that directly to me.  My brain just cannot tell the difference between left and right and north and south and so forth without really concentrating on it.  It is really annoying.  My father and sister on the other hand are like human compasses.

We have a few things in commun and some things very diferent.
My dad has a great sense of humor, which I obviously don't have, and he is far more conservative and closed to new ideas than I am.

One thing we do have in commun is that we both can't hold a grudge for more than 5 minutes.

I look like my father, but I have my mother's temper.
He's a cool, statesmanlike executive that knows how to work within organizational structure successfully.  I punch filing cabinets.

Raised by a dominant mother. That explains everything.

My dad's a lapsed Mormon repressed homosexual with a teenage daughter who doesn't talk to him and a loveless marriage.  If I was in my dad's position, I would have either tried to fix it with all my energy or killed myself.  Not like him much.

He holds a grudge against an Arab for 5 minutes, then moves on to the next Arab.

I'm quite simillar to my father, but as I grow older I'm starting to be even closer to my father's father in some aspects. His mouth, his eyebrows and forehead... and some of his temper. I hope this trend doesn't go too far, because Grandpa was (or became in his last years) very irascible, a sore loser, and extremely good at holding grudges - he hated Germans so much because of the Civil War that he could never bear watching a German team on TV!

I'm a lot like my father, both in terms of looks (down to stuff like being unable to grow hair on certain parts of my face, thus inability to grow sideburns) and in terms of behaviour. He is a fucking panic/drama queen, too. :P
