Fantastic albums. Got a shock the other day when there was an article about Jagged Little Pill's 20th anniversary.

Was listening to Metallica's Master of Puppets, Slayer's Reign in Blood, and Maiden's Somewhere in Time at the office - all released in 1986. A colleague (she's born in the 90s) asked me what I was listening to.

I said, "Oldies."

When those albums were released "Heartbreak Hotel", "Love me Tender", and "Sixteen Tons" were as old as these albums are now.

That's OK, grumbler's rebellious years were listening to all those underground labels that started writing operas in German, because they didn't sell out to The Man.

Already feeling old as fuck today, 5 hours in and I still have one more side of the house to power wash and I can barely move already.  :weep:

Good point. When we grew up we couldn't really see Elvis as rebellious, but the historical parallel to Nirvana and grunge breaking new ground is valid in hindsight.

Incidentally enough, Elvis Presley released Jailhouse Rock on this day in 1957.

What's more striking than it being 25 years ago is that I'm more than twice as old as I was then.

And today's music sucks.

RHCP was a slightly more established band, and I think the album sold fairly quickly.  Nirvana was a complete unknown and Nevermind took some time to build.

Actually you are wrong (and not just for refusing to crop your quotes). If you are past your 30th birthday, this means you have lived on the planet for over 30 years - just as a child who is past his or her first birthday has lived on the planet for over 1 year.

My favorite watering hole in Barcelona is a 1990s-themed pub called "Nervermind". That's probably sad, isn't it?

Maybe BSSM charted first in Spain, hard to check that. But I distinctly remember RHCP being huge in my group of friends ("Get it away" was a smash), and Nirvana coming after that.

Well Chili Peppers were around since 1983 and had released 4 albums prior.

Hey, it was a long time ago!  :P

True story, the song became immensely popular around my group of friends, listening to it on the radio, and until I got my parents to buy the record (I was 13 and without my own income :p), we had to figure out the song title from the chorus, with rather unfortunate guesses.

Other notable albums of 1991: Metallica's self titled album (the black one), Guns'n'Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II, Pearl Jam's Ten, R.E.M.'s Out Of Time, Michael Jackson's Dangerous, Genesis's We Can't Dance, Skid Row's Slave To The Grind, ...

True, Guns'n'Roses were also huge, but as far as I can remember they did not really "change" the music scene the way Nirvana and their ilk did. Hard to imagine late 80's and early 90's without them though.

Yeah, Guns 'n' Roses were, in many ways, the last of the "hair bands".  A bit more hard-edged than almost any other hair band, but pretty much the sub-genre they fit into.

The Use Your Illusion albums were a fitting end to that era (let's not talk about The Spagghetti Incident).

RHCP was a little more known ("Ooooh they did that Stevie Wonder song, right?") but Nirvana wasn't THAT unknown; granted, Bleach didn't get them onto MTV or mainstream radio, but if you were listening to college radio and alternative stations at the time (99.1 HFS ftw), you knew who they were or at least knew they were out there, just like you knew who the Smashing Pumpkins or Goo Goo Dolls were (barely) even if they weren't on MTV or the lbig dumb LOL WHAT TIME IS IT ZEPPELIN O'CLOCK RAWR ROCKTOBERFEST stations, either.

Skid Row was later than Guns N Roses and harder edged (at least Slave to the Grind was). Not sure if Slave to the Grind was really that much of a success though.

But music taste is very subjective, so if you all like 'em, rock on.  :)

No, I mean later as in "afterward, subsequently, or at a time in the future". You know, "later". Ie, there was Guns N Roses, and then later, Skid Row came along. Later.

Guns N Roses' first album was Appetite, released 1987.

Later, Skid Row released their first album, Skid Row, in 1989.

Go fuck yourself in the assburger, you fucking simpleton.  Skid Row was not "later" than Guns N Roses.  They even toured together.  Now, you want to say that Skid Row was "later" than, say, the Bee Gees, then your autistic ass would be correct.

Whatever man. Skid Row came along later.

Half these bands are still around. The Bee Gees apparently only finally ended in 2012.

I was just trying to bring up Skid Row because they were awesome, but end up talking about Bee Gees. Thanks cdm.
