Title: Your Commute.
Post by: mongers on September 18, 2016, 04:37:46 PM
What's the state of your commute, has it gotten better or worsen over time?

What has been your longest routine commute to a regular place of work?

Takes about 8 seconds to walk from the bed to my computer.

Longest commute was probably 30 minutes each way.

Eh, takes me about 15 minutes each way right now.

My longest commute was when I lived in Fallbrook, CA and worked at the base in Point Loma.  Right around 60 miles on I-15.  Took at least 1.5-2 hours due to traffic.

So bucking the trend in the continent sized US.

I've also done the 10-15 second trip to a pc.

Longest commute a 75 mile round trip drive.

~8 minutes from my apartment to the coffee machine at work.

Longest commute was 30 minutes biking to the post office at 6 am, I prefer my current situation.

It sucks. I leave really early in the morning so I can avoid the traffic but the trip home every day sucks ass. 45 minutes when I go straight home, 1+ hours when I have to pick up Henry from day care. Everybody else in my house has a less than 10 minute commute by car though so it is a sacrifice I have to make.

An hour to work on a good day, usually closer to an hour and twenty minutes now that school has started, in the morning.
Roughly ninety minutes to two hours for the ride home, depending on how many people refuse to stop texting on the way home and crash into somebody's ass.
If it's raining, add more time.
80 miles round trip a day.

About 20 seconds to get to the fridge, grab an energy drink, and proceed to the basement.

Lately 1h05 min by public transportation. Not the longest I had, something like 1h30 is the record I believe :(
Current is from downtown to a business park near Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport. It's only temporary though.
I haven't had a major transportation system screwup on a work day in a while though.

For the next week it is 5 minute bike to work.

After that, who knows?  I will likely be living in a cardboard box under an overpass somewhere.

Current commute is about 7 miles;  takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes depending on traffic.

Longest was back in WV when I lived in Oak Hill and worked in Charleston.  About 60 miles;  I could make it in an hour (it was almost all interstates) but usually took about 90 minutes (the short part of the drive after getting off the interstate at Charleston was pretty congested, and the short part on the other end was a narrow, curvy country road).

About five minutes from my house to the office.   :)

Longest commute was an hour and a quarter each way from Detroit to Lansing, but I only had to do that twice a week.  I loved the Lansing office, but I hated that commute.  In those days our office manager in Detroit had become so extraordinarily petty that the office coffee pots were forbidden.  He forbade us from even having a "Coffee Club" where employees would chip in to buy the coffee and maintain the pots.  We didn't even have an office manager in Lansing; and the coffee flowed like a bitter black river.

Oddly at the end of my longest commute, we also had a very petty office manager, he also smelt.

The official reason was that they were a fire hazard.  The real reason was that in our transition from Cingular to AT&T we lost our mail room (previously one of his fiefdoms) so he felt the need to remind us peons that he, not corporate, was really in charge.

Some of the worst offenders of this where I'm at are the directors coming in and trashing the break room (along with students), although the part relating to coffee is mostly limited to leaving their mugs sitting around everywhere.  One of the more gross things a couple of them do though is they don't cover the stuff they put in the microwave, then don't clean up the mess they leave in there.  <_<  Thanks for leaving the puddle of whatever that nasty smelling crap is for someone else to clean up, boss!  Oh and popcorn.  Some dumbass burns a bag of popcorn every day.  I haven't figured out who is doing that yet though.  Could be revenge of the peons.

My commute sucks.  It's about 50-55 minutes door to door.

The "good" thing is that I take the LRT.  I get on at the very first stop on the track.  So rather than get on the train that's leaving right away, I wait and get on the next train that leaves 5 minutes later.  I'm first on board, then I put my head down and snooze for the ~20 minutes till my train pulls into my station.

Driving would save 5-10 minutes in the morning (and frankly none at all in the afternoon), cost a couple hundred per month in gas and parking, and wouldn't let me snooze.

My best commute... living in Whitehorse was about a 15 minute drive through lovely Rabbitfoot Canyon.  I'd see wildlife along the way sometimes.  Mind you the downside was I had to park on the street, and in the middle of a Yukon winter my truck could be pretty damn cold at the end of the day...

Could be worse, man.  I'm up to my ass in the eastern hemisphere.  All flavors. Asian Tigers, People's Republic, Bollywood, you name it.  And not domestic ones--you know, those that grew up with things we have here called "nutrition" or "courtesy"--but fair trade ones.

So lunch time is an exciting time for everybody. Refrigerator smells like Quang Tri Province, August 1968. Microwaves smell like a Mumbai open market, all curry and feet.  God knows what nightmares they're reheating.  It's like Temple of Doom meets Dr. Lazarus's dinner in Galaxy Quest.  Yikes.

I actually stay at my sister in laws in Buffalo one or two nights a week so I can avoid the drive. The commute from her place to work is 5 minutes, 15 if I have to go downtown.

When I was in Berkeley, I only used the microwave in the student dormitory once.  The smell was an unforgettable experience.  I was very surprised, as I view Berkeley students as elite and well-disciplined.

Current commute: 20 minute drive.

Longest commute: 70 minute drive from one end of Hong Kong to the other.

I am commuting right now on the local train. Takes me like 30-35 minutes door to door. If weather permits I can commute in a similar time via bicycle. A car would probably shave off 15 minutes in the morning and 5 in the afternoon.
My employer has a new office that is two minutes walking distance from my apartment. I consider trying to get a job there...

Before we moved offices I had a 25 minute commute on the subway, changing trains once.

Now that we're close to the city center I can take the tram along Ringstraße. It's about 20 minutes now (tram is slower than subway, of course). If I just walk to the office it's about 30-35 minutes.

About 8 minutes by bike since August, it's fantastic. I can never go back to a real commute  :(

By contrast, the first half of the year was 2 x 1 hour and 3 x 3 hours a week (one way), which sucked. A lot.

I work at home, so it's about the 30 seconds from my bed to my studio. However, once a week I have a meeting in Barcelona and it's about 90 minutes commute door to door.

My longest commute was when I was an on-set writer in a TV show in Madrid, and the soundstage was 40 km away from town, without a direct mass transit connection. It took me almost two hours and a half to get there. Fortunately, early during production they added a van that picked up the crew, which cut down travel time to one hour.

Oh yeah, my longest commute was during the office training part of my public administration training.

10 minutes to bus station
45 minutes to train station
45 minutes by train
15 minutes by foot

:D

Daily 1hour for 19km.

5 minutes foot to bus stop
45 minutes on bus
5 minutes walk to work

With the car I would do it with ten minutes less in the evenings and in the mornings it could be longer, since the bus has a dedicated lane for the longest part of my drive. Nice moment to read my books.
With the bike It would be the same. BUt I don't fancy to drive a bike along the shortest route which is a big and busy road even though there's a seperate bike line.
The health benefit of the bike ride would be undone than by the fine particles emissions by the traffice next to me.

If the metro is working well, about 30 minutes to work and 30 minutes back. Usually though, the delays lengthen it to 45 minutes. The metro is just a block over from my apartment and work is across the street from the closest metro entrance so walking is minimal.

2.5 miles/16 minutes to work, which is mostly downhill, 2.5 miles/21 minutes back home, which is mostly uphill.

Gosh, I'm going to say worse, since I used to own a car, and lived 2000 feet from my office.

I think that counts more as business travel than a commute.

I used to have to routinely travel 1-2 hours each way for court on average three times per week, but I don't think of that as "commuting".

30 km round trip that takes ~50mins then I'm home for ~35mins & I go pickup the children a ~16km round trip that takes another 50mins.

I use the time home to start dinner & shower.

The overall time hasn't changed even if my work place moved 2 years ago.

It's anything between 30-1 hour drive one way, heavily depends on traffic, but usually around 40 minutes.

I enjoy driving, plus its a great time to blast music really loud or listen to an audio book, so I don't mind it at all.

This school year my daughter is at a school about two miles away from last years, but the location is such it adds like 15 minutes to get out of town and on the interstate, which in turn translates to at least another 30 minutes of traffic since by then there are more assholes on the way to work. :(

Next year the new school been built is in a better location to get out of town.

I've done the work-at-home thing at various stages in life, but it drove me nuts.  Once in a while is OK, I could even get with once a week, but I don't like work life crossing over into my home life any more than necessary.

You could do it here but riding around near traffic here, bike lanes or not, feels very unsafe.  They do have some trails that crisscross the city though that I know people use as part of their commutes, which is interesting:

http://www.sanantonio.gov/portals/0/files/parks/pdf/GreenwayTrailMap.pdf

Once they get it finished up there in the north, and given enough time, I could ride from my house (on the NW side up nearish where it says "Prue") to the Ft Sam Houston area (I see no reason to go to the end of that trail, since from what I know, it's just some neighborhoods) with minimal time spend on the street dodging cars.  It's like 20 miles by car, which is fairly direct, so that's a pretty good ride going around the city like that.   If I worked at UTSA I could easily use that.  It goes right there, and there's an entrance to the trails right around the corner from my house.

People who commute on bicycle in the Surrey countryside are foolishly brave, and very inconsiderate. The roads are jammed packed with cars, and narrow. The only saving grace is this isn't Hungary, so people are not doing suicidal overtakes all the time. Lotsa' people would die otherwise.

But 3+ cars following a cyclist dressed like Armstrong, sweating to do 10 miles per hour uphill because there is too much opposite traffic to overtake, is a common sight.

Then of course at red lights the bike guy pushes up to the front of the queue so we all have to do the whole dance all over again.

My three mile commute has remained the same. It gets lighter during the summer with school being out, and vacations lessening traffic. I just have one stop light to go through on a two lane highway which is usually about a ten minute wait, sometimes longer. (I go home for lunch every day, nice break, catch up on news, water my garden, etc.) But I won't be doing even that small commute after the end of October as I'm retiring.   :)

At least to leave my current job and in a while maybe get a part time job, but "no heavy" lifting mentally or physically.  I'm done with the grind.  I've been wanting to retire for a while but waited it out for a while. At my work place they're going through a lot of heavy work, project after project and computer system upgrades coming up. Too much for what I want to do now. So that adds into my choosing to retire at this time.

So what tools do you use to calculate if you have enough money to retire?

I did calculations on what I will have coming in from all sources, then did calculations on taxes and health care plans and what I need monthly for expenses. It all looks ok, and I should be fine. I still have a small mortgage on my house but once that's paid Social Security will pretty much pay my monthly bills. Then I'll have a small pension plus savings and 401k plans from my company.

I'm not going to let this thread degenerate into a Mono moneyporn thread.

A Mono fapping in Hong Kong creates a hurricane in America.

Congratulations KRonn,.

You're just part of the advanced guard for when this place largley becomes a retiree filled room behind the shop.   :P

Even Grumbler will have to catch up with me!   ;)

But yeah, we've all been here for many years now! I think a couple others have already retired? If not then maybe soon I'll have company in the retiree's lounge.   :bowler:
