Can anyone recommend any decent space based RPGs for PC (of any age as long as it's reasonably playable on modern machines)? There don't seem to be all that many. Mass Effect and the Old Republic series. ... SSI's Buck Rogers games? Maybe the old Battletech ones? Phantasy Star if I want to go all emulator-like.
Mind you, not sci-fi RPGs (of which there exist some), but a good old fashioned space or space opera RPG. Fantasy RPGs are a dime a dozen, but ones set in space are so few and far between. :(
Apparently, there is something called Technomancer, which had received lukewarm reviews, but some praise at least for the story. Since its for current generation, and my pcs are not gaming rigs, I haven't tried it myself.
Yes, the reviews were pretty mediocre for this one. It's from the same people who made Mars: War Logs which had a similarly mixed reception (it had a horrible reception till they re-did all the voice overs, apparently).
Ultima: Martian Dreams?
All I can think of is Anacronox.

Good call, Anachronox is a fine game. Old-ish, but good.
If Syt digs J-RPGs, there's Rogue Galaxy. It's basically Final Fantasy in space.

I loved that one. Best Sci Fi RPG I ever played. I don't think it has aged well though :P

I don't mind JRPGs, but I'd prefer something I can easily play on PC (haven't dabbled in PS2 emu).
Well the new Torment game is going to take place 1 billion years in the future :P

I should maybe clarify: I mean RPGs in space, traveling between planets etc. Not games in a sci-fi setting (there's Shadowrun etc. for that). :)
I know, it's pretty specific. When I'm back in Vienna I'll check if there's maybe some RPGMaker creations on Steam.

SSI's Buck Rogers games?
I remember playing the first one to death as a child. I wonder if the sequel was any good? :hmm:
Well, if you've never played Spaceflight / Star Control II / The Ur-Quan Masters, it may not really fit the bill of a RPG, but may still provide some enjoyment. (Though it is quite old).

I believe that is also the release date.
Star Point Gemini and Rebel Galaxy were decent.
I have both in my Steam account but haven't played them yet.

Space: 1889
If you want really old school.
No clue how good it is, but I just ran across one called Stellar Tactics on Steam as an Early Access game @ $20 it might be worthwhile
Escape Velocity.
Forgotten about Space: 1889. Thanks. :)
Stellar Tactics looks good - I'll keep an eye on it, and how regularly it will receive updates, how long to proper release etc.
Escape Velocity seems to have a bit of a spiritual successor in the (free) game Endless Sky: http://store.steampowered.com/app/404410/
