Came across this chart of what different languages think animals sound like. The French chicken is my favourite.

Bird (small): chip.
Bird (medium): chip.
Bird (large): chip (loudly).
Many birds: chip chip.
Italian is such a beautiful, complex language.

I could never understand English-speaking pigs. Where the hell does that "oink" come from anyway? Has anyone ever heard a pig say "oink", or anything resembling that?

Sure.
Can pigs even pronounce the k sound?

inhale through your nose while saying oink. Seriously do it, you'll sound like a pig
Any sound pronounced in the back of the throat is going to be difficult to transliterate. How would you write a snore for example? Most cartoons write "ZZZZZ" but that's not really close.

How do you spell the grunting sound they more normally make?
In English that is. No Dutch Gs or french anything allowed.
You can somewhat hear the oink with smaller pigs.
