Trump is a demagogue.

Have you ever seen a party national convention where absolutely no one talked about the party's platform before? I guess Trump figures he doesn't need to pay any attention to it, and the other candidates are glad not to be saddled with anything he would accept.  It's just odd, though.

The actual platform is absolute mush.  It is basically "if something is bad, we will get rid of it; it something is good, we will do more of it."  What those things are aren't spelled out.

The Republicans have had six years to propose new legislation to deal with the issues raised in the platform.  They haven't done it.  The only really strong Republican congressional initiative of the last six years, to increase America's consumption of death (by eliminating taxes on it) isn't in their national platform, as far as I can see.

I don't mind that much the fiscal conservatism of Republicans but their social view... oh my. So, well, I support [insert any Democrat presidential candidate]. So that makes me a Hillary supporter.

Tim Kaine seals the deal.  I may very publicly soon campaign for Clinton-Kaine.  My free time.  :(

Don't laugh, but the first thing that I noticed, that turned me off to him was his body language and non-verbal communication.

I'll be voting for Jill Stein.  Again.  I know how New York will roll, so I have the ability to vote with the candidate I actually come closest to agreeing with instead of having to go lesser of two evils route.

Considering Jill Stein is an imbecile and her party supports things like herbal remedies and anti-vax you should probably keep that to yourself.

FYI, when I volunteered at a presidential campaign (Phil Graham 199whatever) all the full time staff were stone cold heaterectomies.

All I've seen so far are attractive 20-something-year-old women and gay guys.  Grassroots leadership here in the northern Virginia area, such as the local precinct captain, also seem to be well-put-together professional women in their 30's and 40's.

Gay guys love campaigning. 90% of the Remain campaigners I met in London were posh, loud gays.

Hey we don't want BA on our side. You saw what happened when he abandoned the Kansas City Royals because they would never win.

But I guess I do have to ask...would you really want somebody as President advancing those kinds of ideas? I mean I presume when you say you would vote for Jill you mean you think we would be best off with her as President.

I'm not a fan of any of the options this time out in all honesty.  I am a big fan of additional viable parties entering the scene though.  As such, I've voted third party in every Presidential election since I turned 18 as well as supporting candidates through their non-Democrat/Republican party affiliations when voting in other elections.

Ok that's fair. I have certainly been there before. And, as you say, New York doesn't seem like a battleground.

If I got to chose the president from the people running, I'd definitely pick Gary Johnson. In part because I know his daughter (though not very well) and she is really cool. Also, he has climbed the seven summits and done a sub 11 hour iron man, and that rocks. Also, he was something of a rock climber.

But it is tough for me to vote for him if that could mean Trump is president. I guess my vote is symbolic anyway as Georgia isn't going to be decisive in the election, so do I want to cast a symbolic vote against Trump through a legitimate contender or a zero chance contender that I prefer?  :hmm:

I might be a bad citizen because I don't know any election I get to vote in except for president.  :(

Probably doesn't matter though. Statewide races are won by republicans, and I think where I live recently got moved from an uber democratic district to an uber republican one. Sometimes there are interesting referenda, though, which I usually vote against on principle. Except for the time I emphatically voted for allowing sunday alcohol sales.

In this election, do you think the usual qualifications about safe Republican/Democrats districts, states, battlegrounds, still hold? Or do you think Donald Drumpf's candidacy messes things somewhat?

Well Jaron made the announcement that if Trump won the Republican Nom that Utah would vote Hillary. Which would be astounding since Utah is the most lopsidedly Republican state as far the Presidential Elections are concerned. But I have my doubts that would happen.

I think it messes with things. For instance, I don't think it is all that improbable that Clinton wins Georgia. However, I think it is quite improbable that she wins Georgia and becomes president by less electoral votes than whatever Georgia has. If she wins Georgia she should win in a landslide.

Utah is a true oddball state. I think it is plausible (if unlikely) that Utah could flip to the Democrats and Trump could still compete nationally.

But Georgia isn't all that unique. It is hard to see Clinton winning Georgia and not also Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. Which ultimately means Georgia probably doesn't matter--because that would mean a Clinton landslide (or at least easy win).

Well, I didn't anticipate the rise of Johnson. Our last poll had the state like maybe +2 Trump with a 20-25% showing for Johnson.

Looking at the states demographics, Clinton's best support will come from Salt Lake City. It's very liberal and a pretty gay city.  Most people I know are disgusted with Trump for various reasons but will vote for him because he isn't Clinton or will vote for Johnson. It could swing Clinton but I do think it'll be close. Mormons detest immorality and both Trump and Clinton are seen as immoral.

Ethnic whites are the key demographic, which puts Penn in play, and might take Florida out of play.

Interesting how after a "revolution" and "upheaval" the battleground states don't change that much.
