Option 1:

New Zealand will have a referendum on their flag in March (3rd to 24th March). Which do you prefer?
The leaf is awful but it's still better than the imperial relic.

Apparently the polls in New Zealand show "the imperial relic" is in a commanding lead. :punk:
New flag sucks. Keep the old one until you come up with something better.
I'm OK with the fern flag except for that black patch.
Old flag is boring. New flag is meh. Tough choice.
Since they will not have a flag with a drunk Kiwi screwing a sheep, I will cast my vote for the new fern flag.
The people of New Zealand really missed a trick by not going with this one:

Yeah, the new design is bland and uninspired IMO. Only thing it's got going for it is that it looks nothing like the Australian flag.
It won't be adopted. John Key (PM) wanted to adopt the Silver Fern flag (All Blacks style), but that went sour and he's sort of given up on the project. The RSA and other people have also been pretty good at building opposition to any change. At this point it's really mostly a token effort for the government to not loose face by abandoning the process.

Well that is the thing. The flag is a relic. People have attachments to relics.
Gallipoli comes up a lot in the debate.
I like the 2nd fleg better. :P
Yet another example of the politics of empty symbolism instead of substance. New Zealand needs to become a republic and *then* change the flag. :P
NZ isn't going republic anytime soon. The royal family draws out huge crowds every time they're here and knighthood has been restored not long ago. Since the Treaty of Waitangi (the fundamental contract between Maori and Europeans) is between Crown and Maori, it would also require a major redefinition of the country in a lot of ways.
I suspect Key is really a republican (former investment banker, rationalist business man), so flag change was his quiet rebellion. Even that is set to fail spectacularly though, so he's probably happy he never went further.
This is a classic when talking about the flag debacle:

The leaf is way better.
Stick to the old one of course. Hurray for the Anglo-celtic club. Please come back canada.
Plus I like the little feeling of superiority I get whenever someone mixes up the NZ and Australia flag

The leaf flag is awful.
I like one with more attitude.
This is the only flag I like.

Well, not really.
Flags with leafs on them are alright.

That flag is revolting.
I got so damned tired of the EU 2 rebels.

Same. Heck, I get tired of EU 4 rebels and they're much easier to deal with.
I still haven't played much of that one.

This is off topic, but I tried a game of Victoria 2 some weeks ago. I'd forgotten how to play it, and man, that can be a masochistic experience.
Actually I tended to get those in response to reforms :(
That game requires way too much effort to play. I feel like a need a real council of ministers giving me advice.

All of them were good, but Elvis definitely had the legs. I never tired of hearing his advice, unlike the others.

I liked the chick 'cause she had a sexy voice.
For a short while Hastings (a book and video store) let you rent PC games. I remember renting Civ2 and finding out happily that the game did not need a CD to actually play it.

Good waste of energy and funds they spent on this nonsense. <_<
You did the right thing New Zealand.
The status quo won
I'm guessing the Queen's imminent 90th birthday celebrations helped remind the Kiwis of their Commonwealth responsibilities.
So no laser eyes kiwi flag? :(
