Title: Vote for the next Portuguese President!
Post by: Duque de Bragança on January 24, 2016, 12:09:47 PM
Lots of independent candidates though some are officially supported by political parties (go figure), a leftist, a maoist, an orthodox marxist-leninist, centre-right candidate, two from the centre-left, etc.
I almost forgot to vote so here is a reminder for Languish. :)

Sorry for the wildly varying sizes of the pics.

Do to wild pic sizes and resulting displacement of radio buttons, I have no idea which candidate I actually voted for.

Top-down candidate names

1
Henrique Neto, member and former MP of the Socialist Party.

2
António Sampaio da Nóvoa, Independent and former rector of the University of Lisbon (2006–2013),[4][5][6] supported by the LIVRE and the PCTP/MRPP (first party of former European Commision President Durão Barroso i.e Maoist party CIA sub if I am to believe the "orthodox" marxist-leninist PCP).

3
Cândido Ferreira, Independent, and former member of the Socialist Party.

4
Edgar Silva, regional MP for the Legislative Assembly of Madeira from the Portuguese Communist Party, supported by the Portuguese Communist Party. A former priest. :pope:

5
Jorge Sequeira, Psychologist, researcher and university professor.

6
Vitorino Silva, Independent, more commonly known as Tino de Rans.

7
Marisa Matias, sociologist with work in the area of environment and public health, and European MEP of the European United Left–Nordic Green Left, supported by the Left Bloc and the MAS.

8
Maria de Belém, former President of the Socialist Party (2011-2014) and former minister

9
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, former leader of the Social Democratic Party (1996–1999), supported by the Social Democratic Party and the CDS – People's Party. The former being a centre-right party and the latter the only bona fide conservative party in Portugal, despite their names.

10
Paulo de Morais, Independent, former deputy mayor of Porto (2002–2005), strong advocate against corruption in Portugal.

PS: if a mod can fix the sizes, that would be appreciated.

I don't see Maria de Belém showing up. She's the only candidate I know as I heard about her when I visited Lisbon last year.

I thought I had put her picture but she's not shown. Too much options?

Voted no. 3 as he looks like a no-nonsense centre leftist.

Jorge Sequeira, Psychologist, researcher and university professor.

I would have guessed he did a morning radio show, based on the pic.

It's over, no need for a run-off.
Marcelo Rebelo da Sousa won with 52 % of the votes, that's the penultimate (top-down) in the list.
The Portuguese president has little powers though except vetoing laws and calling early elections, if there is a political crisis. Given the very diverse left coalition (communists, leftists and centre-left) and the economic situation this could happen as soon as April (no early elections until at least six months after the last ones).
