I'm planning some days away with the family, and I'm still uncertain about the destination.
Berlin,
pros: never been there; Pergamonmuseum
cons: never been there, don't know the best areas to sleep/dine/visit (Charlottenburg has some good prices?), kid-friendly?
Barcelona:
pros: excellent place to have fun, although I don't know how much with three kids; food and wine!
cons: already been there, where to stay?
Wien:
pros: wonderful museums, reachable by car
cons: already been there, although in the last century.
Advice is sought. :)

I've heard a lot of good things about Berlin. And since you've never been there. Vienna should be good for a short family holiday as well. The city centre is basically a big museum and there are lots of things happening around Christmas IIRC.
Never been to Berlin or Barcelona.
Something to keep in mind about Vienna: it's usually very booked/expensive this time of year what with all them Christmas Markets. And you will probably run into plenty Italian tourists. ;)
I would recommend coming here in spring or fall (though fall is also convention season and can often also has a mark up in major hotels).

I really like Berlin but I have only ever been there in the Summer so I am not sure how it would be this time of year. But you could spend all your time in the Museums so probably not a factor. :)
It's winter. Go somewhere warm. So from your list - Barcelona.

Given the time of the year I'd go to Barcelona. Berlin is great but I'm not sure if Christmas is the best moment to visit.
Although, if anyone does Christmas well, its the Germans.

Yes, but the big Christmas market would be Nuremburg. Or Lübeck, if you prefer it a bit more intimate.
If I might propose an alternate:
take advantage of the cheap Canadian dollar and come skiing in the Canadian Rockies over Christmas. :)
The Canadian Rockies are, unfortunately, a bit over my proposed budget - I'll wait for more prosperous times, and for the children to master skiing, then I'll accept your offer, BB.
The family appears to be leaning towards Vienna, with the festive atmosphere and all (and the considerable savings of going by car ); I'll take one more day to decide and then I'll book somewhere.
Tentative dates for every destination will be from Jan 1st to 6th.

Christmas will be long over then in any decent protestant country.
How about Israel?
Berlin in early January can be frickin' cold if you are unlucky. Like -10 or worse. I would definitely not recommend going there in winter.
Charlottenburg strikes me as rather boring. I prefer Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain or Neukölln. The latter only in certain areas though. :P
You can visit Alabama.
Barcelona would be a welcome break from winter no?
Then again everyone has the same idea I guess

In December or January? Heck winter has just started.

WTF?
Anyway all of those sound cold at that time of year. That's why I'm going to the Canaries in March.

No, Barcelona will be cold then. Heck even southern Spain is cold then.

I'm not exactly what you would call "well traveled." As a kid, our trips mostly were a day trip to the sea (an hour away) or to a nearby zoo; we never went abroad. And in recent years I mostly didn't take the time to catch up.
Visit Germany while there's still some white people living there. In about 20 years it'll look more like Saudi.

I've never been but checking the weather it seems to be 15 to 20 degrees. Really rather nice and mild.
I guess that Barcelona cold is around 10º, which of course is really nice for central Europeans. :P This is being an unusually warm autumn over here.
I think 22 or higher is when it is appropriate to be in Barcelona. I'm not visiting Spain till we hit the other side of winter.

Ramadanfest won't be as cool as oktober fest...!!!
It's been 15 C today in Barcelona, just had a few drinks in the sun. Global warming ahoy.
I have been in Berlin during Christmas, and it was freezing cold, but it had a great festive atmosphere. If you don't mind the cold, I'd have Berlin over us.

I wonder if pedrito starts to think we're avoiding him since we both suggest to not visit our cities?
:hmm: :P

Roll Tide!
Syt, I'm so sorry for you, but we've chosen to come to Wien... ;) :P
I'm looking at two apartments:
one is a serviced apartment located near the Belvedere Gardens, near the Rennweg;
the other, much cozier and nicer, is around Gumpendorferstrasse, in Mariahilfe district:
which area is best for tourist purposes?
Consider we'll travel by car, but I think once there we'll leave the car parked and we'll be using public transport (except maybe for the visit to Schonbrunn).
We'll be in Vienna four full days, give or take one more morning or afternoon.
Mandatory visits will be: Schonbrunn, St. Stephen's church, Naturhistorisches and Kunsthistorisches museums, and the Belvedere museum.
Every suggestion is welcome, obviously.
Mandatory will be a couple of beers together, too, if you will not be escaped to Berlin or Barcelona :D

Either place is fine; the one in Mariahilf is close to the Marihalifer Straße (main shopping street), and will probably have easy access to both U3 and U4 lines.
When are you guys coming?
Also, do you have back room access?

Tentative dates will be from Jan 1 to Jan 6, to be confirmed following availability of the apartments - I'm leaning towards the Mariahilf one, it's way nicer.
Yes, I have BR access.

Ok, just wanted to confirm whether or not your and someone else's visit would be at the same time which would have prompted a mini Languish meet. :)
I am arriving in Vienna on Tuesday, and leaving on Sunday.
