Title: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Berkut on October 29, 2015, 09:41:49 PM
Anyone who has the iPad version interested in getting a Languish game together?

I don't have it, but some quick glances look intriguing enough that I might pick it up if there interest to get a game going.

Well I did enjoy the odd bar brawl in the Dock Ward back in the day. I will check it out.

Looks interesting.  Is it readable / playable on an iPhone?

It is in my iPhone 6s Plus... :)

And for those of us with a 5s and a non-ridiculous screen size?

It is difficult for me to imagine the restrictions under which the peasants operate.

I've heard it's very similar in game mechanisms to Agricola, but have only played Agricola and not LoW.  I'm interested in it.

For those unfamiliar with the game, there's a Tabletop episode about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7DvEIfrP84 (there's also an extended version of it that shows the full, non-condensed gameplay, I think).

I don't have an iOS device, so I'm out.

I got an iPhone 6 plus this year and when I look at other peoples phones I have no idea how they get by on such tiny screens.

I don't understand. If you want something that big, just get a tablet.

I don't get it either.  I get the "kids these days" don't really use the phone for talking but then why not just get a smaller tablet.

No 4" phone in the 6 line - Steve Jobs must be rolling over in his grave.

A tablet doesn't fit in my pocket.

You need a bigger pocket.

I am trying to decide which way to go on that.  I have what others have said is an ancient iphone 4.  It is perfectly fine for my purposes but apparently I must upgrade in the new year.

Right.  And neither does a giant, tablet sized phone.

Well, I don't know about a "giant, tablet sized phone" by my iPhone 6+ fits fine.

Anyway, there is another place to bitch about apple products. I want to get a game going!

I bought this game and I like it, but I feel I suck at it. I never beat the AI on easy.

I don't know if I tunnel vision too much on completing my quests - I rarely buy buildings but I probably should. I rarely play intrigue cards, which is probably another no no. I tend to get a quest card, get what I need to finish the quest and repeat. This doesn't seem to be a winning strategy for me.

Yeah, I am in the same boat Jaron. Send me a friend request, we can suck at the game together.

Berkut,

The game would be slower paced due to geography, but would you be interested in a 3 player game with Martinus?
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Berkut on November 07, 2015, 09:57:49 PM
Sure. That first game was enjoyably close.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep

I know! I thought I had you up until round 7 or 8 and you suddenly surged ahead. :P
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Jaron on November 15, 2015, 07:04:11 PM
Sorry Berkut, I messed up when setting up our 3 person game.

I thought the turn timer was hours between turns, not total time combined you could have to take your turns.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Berkut on November 15, 2015, 09:38:57 PM
I figured you were just desperate for a win. :P

I setup a new one. The game is pretty fun.

It's a great game, very solid worker placement. If you're willing to accept the New Zealand time zone lag, I'll happily join in (my tag is "boghsteren"). I've been playing with some friend for a while, but am pretty bad overall.

Post by: celedhring on November 17, 2015, 03:31:35 AM
Yeah, LoW is great. Very tight placement mechanics and tempo. It's one of our favorite half-afternoon games in our playing group.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Martinus on November 17, 2015, 08:05:45 AM
Sure, the more the merrier. We are anyway lagging badly as Berkut usually plays his round around 2-3 a.m. my time so we normally just play one round per day.

My handle is Martinus.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: bogh on November 18, 2015, 03:32:53 PM
Good stuff so far. BTW the expansion is well worth it once you've mastered the core game, as it adds a bunch of new tricks and an additional dimension to manage (corruption).
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Berkut on November 25, 2015, 10:36:58 AM
That was a good game - I didn't think I was going to win at all, much less end up with a bunch of points. That last quest at the end was basically a gift.

I think the game has a really interesting mix between just playing your own game, and actively trying to interfere with others.

I bought the first expansion, will fire up a new game with it if you guys are cool with that...

Post by: Jaron on November 25, 2015, 12:44:41 PM
I am!

I was shocked when you played that last quest, but from your lord bonus at the end it seems like you probably had us either way. Good game!

Those 40 vp cards are really game changers. I didn't even know they existed and I think Martinus has played two of them.

It really helped to get the extra agent and that double Intrigue effect from quests.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: bogh on December 13, 2015, 10:00:58 PM
Yeah, 40p quests should be grabbed anytime you can.

Marty definitely crushed us!
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Jaron on December 14, 2015, 03:15:03 AM
We should have been more aggressive in playing intrigue so Martinus didn't get to play all the cards he wanted. :P
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Martinus on December 14, 2015, 05:00:59 AM
Also, the "Reveal your Lord" thingie which makes you immune to Mandatory Quests and Intrigue attacks is really a boon. I was lucky I guess.

Guys could we agree that we check (and, if available, complete) if it is our turn at least twice a day - in your morning and before you go to bed? Otherwise, we get individual turns lasting 24+ hours which really takes away from the game enjoyment.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Jaron on February 10, 2016, 02:57:50 AM
I'd prefer a low pressure environment but I'm okay with it.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Berkut on February 10, 2016, 11:32:15 AM
I think it has been progressing ok, honestly. Could be a little quicker, but we do have 5 players.

Heck, if anything I want some more players! And throw in the next expansion next game as well...
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep

Yes! I always wanted to try out those skulls.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: bogh on February 14, 2016, 10:28:49 PM
The other expansion is pretty fun, makes it slightly less clear cut who's in the lead and generally opens more avenues up.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: Berkut on March 10, 2016, 03:28:37 PM
That was a close game. I thought I might have an outside shot at the come from behind win...but came in last instead.

Next game will have the last expansion included...

Room for one more player...

I imagine I will - this has been in the works for a really long time. GMT hired some other group to do it a couple years ago and they completely screwed it up, apparently.
Title: Re: Lords of Waterdeep
Post by: celedhring on March 12, 2016, 12:23:42 PM
Absolutely. I always have a hard time playing Twilight Struggle because it's a 2-player game, and we're always 3-4 in the group I play games with, but this would make it much easier.
