I do comms for a recruitment company now. One of our military research clients wants to attract electrical and electronic engineers and computer science graduates. As part of the campaign, they are running a competition for which the runner gets to blow up a melon at a military firing range.
Can you think of an imaginative challenge that's relatively simple for non techies to judge? It's open to all graduates but ideally should target the disciplines mentioned, embraces the theme of "unexpected science" and perhaps actually involves a melon. The answer should be brief and able to be submitted via social media, but not requiring graphics or video as apparently no-one responds to those.
Wouldn't it be better to have, as part of the challenge, that they create their own challenge so that they can be assessed on their ingenuity. It seems you have already written the necessary parts you need to communicate to the applicants you want to attract. :)
And by the way, having an opportunity to make a melon go boom is really all the motivation my engineer in training son would need. :D
Military ey?
Deduce a practical plan to kill as many people as possible.
Play like Salieri.
Non techies to judge? Maybe not the best idea.
Develop a means to protect a melon from something that would normally destroy it, like an explosion or being run over by a tank.
Micro-missiles launched at the melon.
Construct a bra that can support the weight of two twenty pound melons while the wearer does jumping jacks.

Caliga will volunteer to lead that research team.
Create a robot to play fruit ninja with the melons. If it's a success you can get extra income for selling it as a fruit salad maker on commercial sell TV.
