Title: striped shirts and green pitches - Bluebook takes on FM15
Post by: Bluebook on July 05, 2015, 09:09:56 AM
So, after two successful years as coach of Djurgården in the swedish top league I wanted to move on. I realized there was not much more to do in Sweden. We won the Allsvenska twice (with only minor cheating in the form of re-loads after absurd injuries) but our Champions League adventure came to an abrupt halt when we were put up against Barcelona AND Juventus in the group qualifying round.

The Barcelona games were pure embarassment, where we lost 0-4 and 1-4, despite fielding purely defensive setups and tactics.

Anyway, last time I tried Parma, but gave that up after a season when the club economy was completely wrecked when 170 players came back after loans and only half were attractive enough to get new loan-deals. This time, I want to try England. First I had my eyes set on Norwich, but then QPR fired their coach.

As you can see, Queens Park Rangers have had an abysmal season so far, and they currently find themselves at the bottom of the Premier League. This is what the current situation is when I arrive, this early january morning to my new office.

And here is what we have to work with:

Rules this time:

No reloading, no matter what.

No cheating by copying tactics from someone else.

No editing or cheating or whatever.

These are the remaining games of the season.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fhlfi8to0n%2Ffm_2015_07_05_16_15_48_75.png&hash=90a31c49851d76e18b6bfda74f2f4c9c038b1d68)

17 games means there are still 51 points on the table. However, looking at the opposition 7 of those games are against opposition that means it is not realistic to hope for any points. Leaving 10 games and 30 points. But out of those games, only half are realistically winnable.

So, we can reasonably hope to scrape together 15-20 points. And we are 5 points away from safe ground. This will be a challenge.

To make matters worse, my predecessor was kind enough to wreck the clubs finances before he left. While I can change the wage budget some, and perhaps find some money for a new player or two, there wont be any huge player purchases this season to bail us out.

Now, to complicate things, the board wants two things from me. They want me to play a possession-based offensive game, and they want me to save QPR from relegation.

This will cause some concern when it comes to choosing tactics. After looking at the squad, it seems clear that my team should be built around three players.
Charlie Austin, a 26 yrold striker
Adeel Tarabt, a 26 yrold attacking midfielder
Stephen Caulker, a 24 yrold center defender

These three are my best players, they are contracted to QPR, and they are young enough to evolve over the coming seasons. Having decided that my team will center around this spine, what comes next is to find tactical ways to get these three into play in their best roles.

And here they are, my first setup:

Three things jump out, and these three things might also explain why we are last in the league.

1. Our goalkeepers are really bad
2. Our wingbacks are really bad
3. Our midfield is weak

I cannot remedy all of this at once. But first order of business is to find a new goalkeeper, and try to recruit one of my old players from Djurgården.

Our first game ended with an impressive 0-0 against Hull.

Not really impressive at all to be honest. Hull showed up with a defensive 5-3-2 and we showed up with a defensive 4-1-3-1-1. We did have one in the net, but it was disallowed for offside. Weirdly enough everyone was very happy with the results afterwards. Clearly I have come to a club with very low expectations.

Situation at the bottom after 22 games:

Aston Villa  22
----------------
Sunderland 19
Fulham        17
QPR            16

Of cource we had no chance against United at Old Trafford. 3-0 and an embarrassing interview after the game.

The road to safe ground did not get longer though, just harder.

Sunderland 22
-----------
Aston Villa  22
Fulham       17
QPR           16

We actually manage to score a goal against Wolverhampton. Meaning we advance in the FA-cup. I would rather have had those 3 points in the league though...

In the 83rd minute, and under abysmal conditions, by sheer force of will, we get one in there.

In other news, lady luck decides to piss on us as Watford manages a miraculous result against Chelsea deep deep into overtime.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2F4y4ca1yhj%2Ffm_2015_07_05_18_35_12_81.jpg&hash=87286ce04f68319be66188f181321d2cc3a47913)

They are now at 24 points and slipping away from us bottom-dwellers.

We are coming up on a crucial game in a couple of days as we take on Aston Villa. A loss here means we are almost certainly gone.

We manage to get a crucial win against Aston Villa! Despite a muddy pitch and cold rain, my guys managed to play the best football I have seen them play so far. I dont know if it was because of poor opposition, or if my tactical training is starting to take hold. But this game was never in doubt. Amazingly enough our reserve goalkeeper managed to make two absolutely breathtaking saves.

We leave the last place, albeit with one game more played.

I am too pissed off to write a comment right now, more than that Watford scored their first goal thanks to a shot bouncing off two guys and leaving a Watford striker alone infront of an empty net. When I pushed everything forward to get the equalizer, they got one more.

Now we are facing Liverpool twice in one week. One time in the league and one in the FA cup. Im not holding my breath for anything other than humiliation though.

Title: Re: striped shirts and green pitches - Bluebook takes on FM15

Finances are pretty decent, 2,3M avaliable for wages and 4M for transfers. The transfer window is closed though, and when I brought in a player from Ukraine he did not get a work permit...that cost me 2-3M

The double-header against Liverpool is over.

We lost the FA-cup match 1-5. But after they scored their first goal I swapped out my key players to rest them for the next game.

And...

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fgv0k89psn%2Ffm_2015_07_05_23_10_26_17.jpg&hash=e93d842030387f58078fb8d7c531aa5bea0aab19)

I guess miracles do happen. It was really really lucky though. I think the reds had 2 or 3 in the woodwork, and 5-6 massive shots just inches off target. My goalkeeper is worth his weight in gold, he made several saves that should have been goals really.

I love that goalie, I found him when I was coaching Djurgården and he was my first purchase when I moved to QPR.

Hero of the day

Next game is Sunderland, and if we win, we should be outside the relegation-zone.

Sunderland.

The stadium of light might actually be the worst name for a stadium I have ever heard.

Gloomy skies hang over the pitch, light rain, 9 degrees (C) in the air. The stadium is not even at full capacity, despite all that is at stake this time.

Pre-game tactical setup shows a surprise from the black cats. They put up a 4-5-1 squad, which is odd because they are best at 4-4-2 and they almost always play 4-4-2.

We will face this with our usual 4-3-1-2. Mostly because it worked against both Liverpool and Tottenham, but also because we are best in this form and I dont want to change too much between games unless I absolutely have to.

The two teams

Before the game I find myself second-guessing myself...should I start out more defensively, should we move one player to the midfield to counter the black cat wall? I decide to play an offensive game though. Mostly because my defensive line probably cannot hold an entire game anyway, but also because I need the 3 points more than they do.

Looking at their setup, I think it is kinda obvious how they will play. Two strong and fast wingers will be fed from two very capable playmakers. I have two weak wingbacks (really weak since the best wingback is out 4 games due to a ruthless tackle against Liverpool). I need to hit them higher up on the pitch, and instruct the team to focus on the two playmakers.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fin2punnx3%2Ffm_2015_07_06_08_45_37_43.jpg&hash=3f702f2d773adc7e4834641dfb16b555557ff8fb)

I also give my two defensive-oriented midfielders order to specifically man-mark the two playmakers.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fp21qrbumv%2Ffm_2015_07_06_08_52_08_07.jpg&hash=fdb9faf2425500b05bffcdd2b9f6a323aa1c00e4)

And with that...all we can do is wait and see how this plays out.

Its funny how the small things can decide a game.

In the first attack, their central playmaker hit a ball out on their right, where the winger easily left my defender behind him, hit a perfect cross that was met by their striker and put in the net. In the first minute of the game we find ourselves trailing 0-1.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fmlzxdhck7%2Ffm_2015_07_06_08_57_47_28.jpg&hash=cee1227c086c95de8f8819c458ca7384ec4719ab)

This is the start of a massive offensive from Sunderland. And the first 15 minutes they have three-four chances that really should have been in the net, but pure luck saves us.

We try to stop the bleeding on the left by shifting focus for our wingback to a more aggressive and
Two minutes after that Sunderland has a picture perfect attack that ends with the ball bouncing off the crossbar. We are in deep trouble here and our current tactic is clearly not working.

We will not be able to defend our way out of this, so I order the entire team to push up higher to make the battle for the midfield harder for the cats. We are still not taking an offensive positioning though, we are still balanced. Simply because we are better tactically in that form, and I need to save something for the second half.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fk5y3zmuhj%2Ffm_2015_07_06_09_14_17_45.jpg&hash=7f209e457bd7f023aca2922dae293eab912ed75f)

After 25 minutes we have our first foray into the offensive box. Ends with a shot going miles wide. Still its something. That is quickly followed by another Sunderland shot in the goalpost however. Some more small tactical changes and we manage to get the game moved from our defensive third to the middle of the pitch. It seems the bleeding has stopped at least.

We are slowly getting into the game, having some counters, getting some plays into the box. Late in the first we get a free kick halfway up Sunderlands side. Too far for anything really, but at least a chance to move the team up into attacking position.

The kick is a short pass to Sandro, and...

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Famof666zb%2Ffm_2015_07_06_09_21_05_72.jpg&hash=df6b78fa39e76a67ffcb569e3ee53fcd32a6dd03)

An amazing shot, from 30 yards, sails past the goalie. We have tied the game. Completely unfair, absolutely, but wow.

Title: Re: striped shirts and green pitches - Bluebook takes on FM15
Post by: Bluebook on July 06, 2015, 02:55:58 AM
The second half starts almost identical to the first. Their central playmaker hit the ball to their right, where Giaccherini starts a run. This time however, my wingback does what he is supposed to. I find myself hoping this is an omen of things to come...

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2F4adva2tav%2Ffm_2015_07_06_09_32_04_52.jpg&hash=df4caa8302dd6d066e6902f53e92130b8f5fa57d)

In the next 20 minutes, we manage to score twice, but both goals being disallowed for offside. Just inches each time mind you, so they might aswell have been given. Asshole refs. Im constantly looking at the clock, wanting oh-so-much to give the order to start an all-out offensive. But since we have the game roughly where we want it now, with several really good scoring chances for us. I decide to be patient. Never change a winning team might sound true, it is not neccesarily true in this game though. But for now, I make no tactical changes.

Passing the 70th minute, the game is a mirror of the first half, but with us in the drivers seat. We have almost all the possession, we are lining up the chances, we have had two in goal and disallowed and two in the woodwork. I still fight the urge to set the overall tactic to attack. Not yet.

In the 84th minute, the score is still 1-1, and I unleash the offensive. Much higher tempo and change the overall tactic to attack. Im hoping that my guys have better stamina than theirs. Perhaps 10 minutes left of the game, and we go on the offensive.

Almost immideately Sunderland scores. However it is dissallowed for offside. God. My nerves.

Then we score...in the 87th minute.

Then they score...in the 90th minute.

We face West Brom at our own pitch, which is good.

Here is a look at the pre-game matchup. As you can see, both teams will start out with an offensive-minded tactic. Im not sure how I feel about that, but we will focus on trying to sieze the midfield and play offensively...our defence sucks anyway.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fphr98y1nb%2Ffm_2015_07_06_14_34_13_46.jpg&hash=a356c93719d4cabc4281553af6ddbbe0f0c40e2b)
Ave Caesar, morituri te salutant

We have identified the opposing playmaker, and hope that Sandro can close him down. Sandro is my ball-winning midfielder in this setup, and all the other midfielders have offensive jobs.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fotn03qsbb%2Ffm_2015_07_06_14_39_44_52.jpg&hash=f2d7d270a6dc79e3b222fe242274f5b733ce55e9)

The whistle blows and the first minutes see the game roll back and forth across the pitch. Both teams get good attacks, both teams have chances. Then... as chance would have it, the ball finds its way to my striker in a clear position..

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fsra9t5f4n%2Ffm_2015_07_06_14_44_19_88.jpg&hash=69e2c0c014c4790e9bf3d1bf61ce9b52798e6f2e)

1-0  after 12 minutes.

2-0 after 22 minutes. And that is the end of the first half.

We go into second with the same tactic as the first, but West Brom is pushing hard and we have to switch over to defensive already around 50 minutes, and we are forced to focus everything on defence after 60 minutes. Tactic is set to contain, and everyone drops back to our side of the pitch. Now to defend a two goal lead for thirty minutes...

To make matters worse, three of my key players have been injured in the past two games. All of them are out for the season, meaning I have to field kids from the U21-team instead. Really crappy kids.

So, here we are with two games left of the season. Sunderland will meet Chelsea and Arsenal, so hopefully they wont get any points. But we will have to win both our games.

St Marys stadium, Southampton

16 degrees, calm and cloudy. Almost perfect pitch conditions. 31k tickets sold out of a 32k capacity.

This is a game we have to win. And yet, I cannot field a decent attack. We are fielding a 4-3-1-2 setup, where two of the last three guys are 19. They have no place here, really. All I can hope for is that their youthful enthusiasm and pure adrenaline can run the Southampton defenders to shreds.

We lost ...5-1

We are being relegated, and half of the team (the good half) has demanded I trade them to other teams. I told them all to fuck off and reminded them of their contracts.

Now squad morale is abysmal.

Keep up the posting bluebook :)

My current game after leading Harstad to the Tippeligaen from Norwegian third tier in just three seasons, now faced with dilemma of trying to stick around with Semi pro team limited to players i can attract, or take the job just offered by Leicester City F.C. who are in Championship middling along in 9th place.

Thanks, I will, despite everything

I had to sell the Ukrainian player at a huge loss. I simply could not get a work permit for him. Which blows, at least you should be able to have a clause in the contract that nullifies the contract if work permits dont come through.

I ended up selling that back anyway, United made an offer I could not refuse. 20M as well as 30 percent of the next sale. I think it was a good move, but on the other hand, I might have made a misstake since his replacements are not as good as he was.

Championship started out with a loss against Bristol City. Squad morale is abysmal. I need to buy a decent winger. And beer...

God, my squad is behaving like a bunch of kids.

My midfielder, Sandro, caused a red card in our game against Oxford. As punishment I took one weeks pay. He was extremely disappointed and started whining when I explained that I have to enforce the rules same for everyone. Then this happens:

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2F5cluetoev%2Ffm_2015_07_07_20_54_22_94.png&hash=7bb5d54fa161ef36e1bdb9da0ecaf152871ace2f)

I try to be calm and explain to them that rules must be applied equally to everyone. Still there are some angry looks

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Fo67nbtmmv%2Ffm_2015_07_07_20_58_12_44.jpg&hash=02e417d63952fe5af28ba2223ad1a7612306341e)

The dissenters refuse to budge.

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs5.postimg.org%2Frr3iv1r6f%2Ffm_2015_07_07_21_00_29_48.jpg&hash=83d78d86d0496a271b98a5139205e1f635b74e6e)

I decide to call it a day...cant win them all. But the level of unhappiness in the squad is becoming a major concern. Its come to the point that my team-talks before the games hardly does any effect at all.

It is really fortunate that Austin has come around to my side though. He wanted to lynch me when we were relegated and I did not sell him to a Premier League-team.

So...the next game. We really need to start winning these.

We are facing a team I know nothing about, except that they have a very offensive setup. So I will try to counter it with my defensive setup and see if I can gradually move the game up the pitch.

Here is an overview of my three tactical setups for this season
1-2 are more attack-oriented, and 3 is a more defensive one. Ironically I have had most success with #3. Probably says something about my manager skills  <_<

In all setups I have "retain possession" and "work ball into box". This in an attempt to please the board who wants to see me play a possession-based offensive game.

Any opinions?

Oh, and I know Im not using Alli at his best in #3, but he seems to work fine there, and that formation is fluid so I dont really want to move him up to the middle. And also, I kind of like the defensive symmetry there.

Last game was dreadful. I had the lead with 1-0 and 2-1 but Derby came back and tied the game in the middle of the second. I had all the possession, all the play, we were constanty on the top 1/3 of the pitch...ball just would not go in. Then, at 90+3 they get a free kick, ball sails into my penalty area, and my chief antagonist in the team, Sandro, failed to clear it with a header, and behind him, some obscure fullback scored his first goal ever....Derby 3, QPR 2.

Swindon Town, this dreadful place. Where dreams come to die. Or where they never even dare take shape.

Here, my fate as manager for QPR will be decided, I am sure. The rebellion in the squad is still raging. The players wont react to my team-talk. They still follow orders though. But for how long?

Swindon decides to field a defensive team, or cource. I counter with my best offensive setup. Im aiming to use the flanks to push round the blob in the middle. I have one good winger on the right, and an average one on the right. My two top guys in the middle are top notch. But they have trouble delivering. Its all about scoring now. Scoring and points.

In the 20th minute, Swindon takes the lead. Of cource. We have had 60 percent possession and four or five good attempts. They get up on one counter, and their striker gets his first goal of the season.

I see alot of that, from my opponents..

Swindon wins 2-0. My guys have over 60 percent possession, but at the top 1/3rd of the pitch they cant even connect a five yard pass. When I get back to the office, a note is on my desk.

Incidentally, with a less-skilled or unhappy team, go back to basics. Favour a solid defensive set up and play on the counter-attack. You're probably not scoring the goals you think you should because of your possession; you're letting the other team's defence set before you get into their third. One day you can play like Arsenal or Barcelona, but for now I think you'll just have to teach your team to win ugly - that means crosses, headers and long balls.

absolutely. Some of the best and most rewarding FM games come after unfortunate experiences. After being sacked, you'll be in the right mood to accept even the apparently worst jobs, and have fun in them. Sometimes I resign myself, just to get a new challenge.
oh, and btw, I'm solidarizing with you and all the times you want to pulverize your pc. This game is excellent but frustrating.

Stay in. Some club will come for you. It will be fooked up beyond the pale, but it will be a new job. Like sorting out a faltering 2nd Bundesliga side or a new beginning in the Championship with whatever lurks there.

Yeah, its just that my stupid board demands me to play a possession-based game. For what reason, I do not know. And since I got the team relegated, I figured I did not dare cross them on this too.

10 games into the next season I was made an offer I could not refuse, Stoke offered  me an interview and then the position as manager. Stoke is my rl fav team.

Again I take over a sinking ship. They are in last place with 4 points. They lack the financial muscles QPR had, and their players are mostly useless. I sign on for three years
