June 2nd to the 6th, CF and I will be in London, anyone wants to meet up? :bowler:
We will also visit Rome and Paris before London, if anyone wants to meet up there. http://languish.org/forums/index.php/topic,12523.0.html
Happy to meet for a drink or a bite after work. Let me know nearer the time which date works for you. Spitalfields/Shoreditch/Farringdon/Clerkenwell would work best for me if it fits with others.
I'm in! I can get to anywhere central easily and the places Gups mentioned are good for post-work food and drink.
The closer it is to Waterloo or Victoria the easier it is for me, but it should be no problem!
As long as there is no minimum shoes requirement :P
You still only own a pair of sneakers?
Oh yeah, this will be a true MEGA MEET. I will have The Boss post with more info on dates and stuff. I'll google maps where we will be staying and the above mentioned locations later.
I can easily come down for some of the time
I may actually fly in.

Or how about a weekend Syt? Overnight train in and back?
Not that often you get to meet a real live Rican.
Lusti's itinerary seems to be weird as he seems to be leaving on Saturday. I will probably fly in on Friday and leave on Sunday. Any hotels you guys plan to stay in?
The one near Trafalgar Square we stayed in during the last London meet was nice and reasonably priced.

I will see what I can do, but no promises, as first week of the month has my reporting deadlines.

I expect I'll stay with relatives near Finsbury Park. It has been stressed to me that I should use their place even if they don't get to benefit from my company, which is very kind of them.

More room, food and drinj is included and served at your seat. I travelled Business Premier once and it was champagne all the way!
Hey guys, so is this meet still on?
Turns out I will be in Athens for a quasi-business trip until morning of Thursday, June the 4th which also happens to be a public holiday in Poland (it is Corpus Christi). So with Friday being a part of the long weekend in Poland, I could try taking a direct flight from Athens to London on Thursday (arriving some time in late afternoon) and stay until Saturday afternoon if people are around to spend time together.
Might show up in Paris after all, but not in London. Can't be in both.
Lusti, whatever you do, don't get dragged to some place in the middle of nowhere where Portuguese immigrants play boulles and drink beer bought off a truck.
Cool, we'll be there, and are willing to meet up whoever we can. Don't miss out in the oportunity of a lifetime! Meet real life Ricans! And we won't steal your stuff! We promise! :D
Is boules the one where you roll a big heavy ball or something?
Middle of nowhere being near the former NATO HQ, itself not far away from the current Russian Embassy :)
Boulles (sic actually Boules) is pétanque. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A9tanque (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A9tanque)
As for stealing stuff, there's competition with the gypsies, though not near the former NATO HQ.

My plan is to travel down on the 4th getting to London in the early afternoon. Not quite sure how long I'll stay, probably till Sunday evening.
I should be about at least those Thursday and Friday eves. Likely will be leaving the city on the 6th for some weekend trip with my mother and stepfather.
Have any of you heard of "The London pass"? it includes Tower of London and museums for 22 Euros... does this sound reasonable. im so lost.... :(
So RH, we are planning to see you on June 4th in the afternoon right? So is this a good day for everyone to go to dinner?? following day we are hitting the city, like St Paul and city... any ideas?

Hi CF
I checked their website and the prices were a lot higher than 22 Euros, but maybe you get a discount if you buy the pass in the States? Anyway, if the pass is only 22 Euros you should certainly buy it, you make your money back just with one visited site and save a lot if you visit two or more. If it is the price I saw quoted (£52 or so) then it would make sense if one was putting together a frenetic tourist schedule but I'd not get it, one would end up feeling guilty relaxing in the park or visiting a free museum.
I can act as a sort of guide while I'm down if you want, I'm overdue a visit to a lot of the places that tourists like. I don't know much about the restaurants though, the best places are constantly changing.
Thank you. What about an Oyster card for transportation?
Quote from: capturedfairy on April 23, 2015, 08:05:57 AM
Thank you. What about an Oyster card for transportation?
There might be a daily ticket for tourists that would be better for you (I am not sure). If there isn't, then an Oyster card is certainly the cheapest and most convenient alternative.
Oystercard is certainly the way to go if you are using public transport. Central London is very small though, so a lot of the time it is just as easy to walk. Watch out for those central London tube stations especially; the tube map is not to scale and the central stations are very close to each other, sometimes you end up walking hundreds of yards in tunnels, catching a train, a few more hundred yards in tunnels and then emerging half a mile from where you started.
 thank you guys
Oyster card? Clams don't have pockets to carry a card.
Wiki says :
"The Oyster name was agreed on after a lengthy period of research managed by TranSys and agreed by TfL. Several names were considered, and Oyster was chosen as a fresh approach that was not directly linked to transport, ticketing or London. According to Andrew McCrum, now of Appella brand name consultants, who was brought in to find a name by Saatchi and Saatchi Design (contracted by TranSys), Oyster was conceived and promoted because of the metaphorical implications of security and value in the component meanings of the hard bivalve shell and the concealed pearl, the association of London and the River Thames with oysters, and the well-known travel-related idiom "the world is your oyster"."
So there it is :hmm:

I'm staying at the Strand Palace after all, eldest daughter of my in-laws has moved back in temporarily so the spare room has gone :(
However, I do love the location of the hotel, so it'll probably be better (apart from the cost).

Essentially the beer in the cask is unpasteurised and still alive, this makes it very tasty, but if it is not looked after carefully it will taste horrible. The success rate back in the 1970s was so low that many people switched to lager and keg bitter; since then standards of cellar-keeping have risen, they are especially high in London imo and it is now rare to get a badly-kept beer.

£452 for three nights...................can't say that I'm too thrilled about that, but the cheaper places were either not much cheaper or horrible. I've noticed that the summer "high" season in London seems to be getting more extended and has got to the beginning of June now :(

So what are we doing on Friday?? Museums? Tower of London, Stonehenge?
Best see what the weather is like, if it is fine we can go on the riverboat from Westminster to Greenwich; once there have a look at the old observatory, the Cutty Sark, The Queen's House etc etc
If the weather is crap then I would suggest the museums in South Kensington, not sure how many foreigners get to the V&A museum for example......it is a cool museum though
Weather will be perfect, The Vacation Gods will make sure of that.
I'm not sure they can be bothered in England. :weep:
Perfect weather is not necesarily perfect for us, may be perfect for the frogs and turtles.
BTW I would like to visit the Cutty Sark, even in a rainy cloudy day.
Sad that the HMS Victory is not in London, the oldest commisioned ship (of course our USS Constitution is the oldest commisioned ship AFLOAT, not in dry dock :P).

I'm recommending the Greenwich trip as a good social one. The British Museum is stuffed with great stuff of course, but IMO is best enjoyed on your own or just with your partner, the exhibits there repay contemplation.
Plus I haven't been to the Cutty Sark since the renovation

It is a very doable day trip to see the Victory from London (I've done it--it is a not to long train ride to portsmouth--and the train station is right next to the ships). The naval museum there also has the Mary Rose and some other notable ships--it isn't just the Victory. I think that is the best day trip from London, though opinions may differ.
Also, in terms of naval stuff, they have a replica of the Golden Hind that you can visit in London. The guys there were really good to talk to--one mentioned that they needed to rearrange the cannons on the deck, and I eagerly volunteered to help--which they took me up on. I thought it was cool to drag around cannons on a replica 16th century ship, I'm sure they were wondering how they could reliably find other American goofs to do their manual labor for them.
It was very close to the Globe Theater.
Talking about the Globe, there are performances of Shakespeare's King John with available tickets for Thursday evening or Friday afternoon if people fancy it?
I can join you after work on the Thursday or Friday - I finish at 5pm. Are you around at the weekend too? BTW, Stonehenge isn't massively convenient from London CF, but you might be able to arrange a day coach trip if it's on your must-see list.
:hug:Hi Brazen, ok so we are trying to get together that Thursday afternoon, so you are more than welcome to join us. I don't know where we will be heading for dinner, I guess we will go with RH recommendations. Lusti and I are leaving on Saturday morning, so no weekend for us. We will be there on June 2(Tuesday). We are planning to go to the Tower of London and London eye when we get there and then we might hit some museums. I was thinking that Friday we should go do the tourist thing around the city, guided by RH and whomever wants to join us. Hope to see you!
Yes, phones will work.
I don't think CF will want to spend a day to go see old ships, she would not understand or appreciate the difference between the Cutty Sark and the Victory, and I'm OK with that. I want to maximise my time with Languish friends also (some qualify as history also ).
Shakespeare? Hmm, not sure, prefer more museum time compared to that.
Stonehenge? Well if we combine it with a trip to the HMS Victory that may make it worth a day trip! and we can ignore my above comments. :D
I'd say that the best thing to do is to stay in London, there is more than enough to see and do in the limited time. Stonehenge works best as the start of a west country driving tour............maybe some other year
Most of the London crew are working Thursday of course, so we need to set a time and place to get together ............ inevitably that will involve a pub
Well, looking at google maps, a lot close by, perfect death march city with many pubs to fuel up.
Example, from the Strand Palace to Buckingham Palace, to London Eye, to the HMS Belfast, to the Tower of London is only 5.1 miles. If the boat ride to the Cutty Sark area is close by... Yeah, I could walk those legs off you CF :P I'll get off google maps now, and let RH plan the death marches :D

"..............fifteen men on a dead man's chest, " :pirate
Which, when I was a kid, I assumed was why the poor fellow died :(
Anyway, shall we set a time and pub for the Thursday evening gathering? About 6pm so folk can finish work might be best, but where?
I posted this on FB:
QuoteThe regular "I'm a Londoner who doesn't know London" question. What's a good central London pub in which to gather a group of overseas visitors? Needs to be easy to get to and home from, have a high quaint quotient, good beer (including real ale) and the possibility of gathering 10 people round a table and actually getting served on a Thursday night.
And have food or be near somewhere that serves food.
Thursday night is the biggest drinking night in London as everyone from out of town goes home on Friday night, so anywhere popular will be rammed until about 8 then go mysteriously quiet.
Thursday is perfect. I should be able to get off work a bit earlier to catch you guys, as I am roughly 40 minutes from the central London stations.
6 will work for me.

Still more entertaining than most Radiohead albums.
The George Inn looks like something failry convenient for me, assuming they let sport shoes in!
Sport shoes as in running shoes? Because as a tourist, that is all I plan on wearing for two weeks. If CF tries to force me to wear anything else, I will wear tan combat boots with white socks up to my knees, short running shorts and a hawaiian shirt. Oh, and a staw hat.
Another possibility is to work out where we want to eat, book a table there, gather at the hotel, make our way over to the restaurant and meet up with any latecomers there. After the meal we could go to a few hostelries :hmm:
I know it is against tradition not to get smashed before we go to eat, but, y'know, I'm getting older :Embarrass:

 Lightweights.
Remind me where the hotel is, I'll find a restaurant near there and a pub near that and we can reverse engineer everything else from there.
Hotel is the strand palace, on the Strand.
I wonder if CF and Lusti might fancy a curry down the East End?
It's on the Strand, SE of the Covent Garden, about half way between Leicester Square and Temple stations. :contract:
Btw, it may be some sort of a booking pressure stunt but when I was booking the room about an hour ago, it said there are only 6 rooms left for that date so if any of you plan to book a room at the hotel still you may want to hurry.

Right? Is alcohol not food?
Porterhouse, Ship and Shovell, Lamb and Flag and Marquess of Angelsey are all nearby. Oh wait, I forgot, food...
It's near Soho, so Chinese would be a good choice - you can usually book a room for a group at Royal China.
Tayyabs is always brilliant for cheap and delicious curry, but a bit of a trek from anything else and in a grim-looking bit of London if you've only got a couple of days there.

We are so excited to meet everyone. apparently you guys know where we are going on Thursday night. What about Friday? Who is in for some tourist stuff??
Were you guys still looking for somewhere good to eat along/near Strand? I have a few recommendations:
Port Side Parlour - really good tapas place, very good wines too.
Bianco (on Northumberland Ave) - cheap but very good pizza restaurant.
Strand Dining Rooms - a bit pricey but it has a very nice Old World feel to it (think Strand 1920s).
Herman ze German - German-style sausage shop. It's actually really good (on my fifth loyalty card now...).
If you wander up to Covent Garden, some good places there too including Brasserie Blanc and Salvador and Amandas.

I would also suggest getting a smartphone app with a map of the London underground. Saves a lot of time. :)
Here is the map of the central part:
Unless the things have changed you will arrive at King's Cross/St. Pancrace (that's the part with disabled symbol on it) so it seems like you only need to take the blue (Piccadilly) line to get to Covent Garden and you are set.

It's about two miles and a nice walk if you're not too weighed down with CP's luggage. Go through Bloomsbury (past the Brit Museum) rather than on the main road through Holborn.

Good man
St Pancras is a short 20 minute walk to the Strand, slightly more than Euston to the Strand...........which I always walk as it is easier than getting the tube or hailing a cab; if you have heavy luggage then just get a cab. I guess it also depends on how good your mapreading skills are - first few minutes in a new city can be a bit confusing.
In Google Maps I Trust. :pope:

Maybe if you walk as fast as say a car. I'd say it is more like a 30+ minute walk. ;)
@garbon - yes, checking the map I see I was somewhat over-optimistic.
You don't want to do that walk with luggage. Follow the signs from St Pancras to Kings Cross London Underground and take the Piccadilly Line southbound to Covent Garden. Take the elevator, don't try to climb the stairs! It's a short walk from there.
Alternatively, a black cab won't be too extortionate and very safe, don't listen to Marti, and there's a signposted taxi rank right outside St Pancras.

I have another pub to throw into the mix - The Old Shades on Whitehall. It's the one we go to after the Whitehall March with the English Civil War Society. Real ale, good food and authentically British appalling service in a historic location. The last time we went there in January, I could have sworn the the bar manager was actually Rupert Everett rehearsing for a role.

You should be able to get to tube station from both train stations. Until recently, I wasn't even sure which train station was St. Pancras and which was Kings Cross (-_-) as I was also just at tube stop Kings Cross-St Pancras. Of course, there is some value in getting into right end of the station as otherwise it is quite a hike to get to the Picadilly section

Warspite's eatery suggestions:
Port Side Parlour - really good tapas place, very good wines too.
Bianco (on Northumberland Ave) - cheap but very good pizza restaurant.
Strand Dining Rooms - a bit pricey but it has a very nice Old World feel to it (think Strand 1920s).
Herman ze German - German-style sausage shop. It's actually really good (on my fifth loyalty card now...).
If you wander up to Covent Garden, some good places there too including Brasserie Blanc and Salvador and Amandas.
Berry, I have not had time to click on all those and have no idea. Maybe CF can give us her opinion. I just want to hang out with you all.
I hope we meet somewhere that has a red phone booth close by, we need a "How many languishers fit in a phone booth" pic with a FU Jaron sign. :D

The most postcardish red booth is one near the Big Ben where you can take your picture at the booth with in on the background.
Grody is nice but skiivy means the same thing and sounds cooler IMO.
BTW, is a FU Jaron sign still the proper languish meet up pic?

@Lusti and CF - I've just been checking my train times and (unless the train is badly delayed) find I'll easily be ready by 2pm on Thursday, ok with you guys if we rearrange our meet in the hotel foyer to then?

Hey guys, sadly my trip to London is now a bit in limbo due to work stuff - I should know more on Monday.
Just checking in after my Scottish trip. We missed the last ferry and got marooned on Mull, ended up with the last rooms at the Western Isles Hotel in Tobermory and drank some excellent mojitos there
Mull
So what's the plan?
Looks like the Old Shades..........from what time onwards though B?
6 or 7 pm is probably best.
Let's make it 6 then we can have a gossip and a drink while we decide what to eat. Unfortunately unless I've miraculously finished a 2,000-word freelance feature I'm writing that's due Friday I'll have to slip away before too long.

If I am able to get off one hour earlier, I should be there around 6, if not I shall arrive an hour later. :)
The Old Shades is actually on Whitehall rather than the Trafalgar Square it mentions on the website. Can't say I've ever noticed it when walking down Whitehall, looks pretty good in the pics though.
The Old Shades will likely be stuffed full of my colleagues.
It's a good pub; it had a makeover three years ago turning from a dingy Whitehall tourist trap that wasn't very good at trapping tourists to become a much more up-market gastropub. It has a good selection of beers and the staff are friendly. It does get rather busy, however, once all the departments of state in the area start disgorging thirsty civil servants.
The only downside is that it is not cheap, you will be paying £4.50 for a pint.
Fun Fact: before we moved offices by about 200 metres, my office used to be directly above the kitchen of the Old Shades. They had a huge extractor fan that obviously had a failing bearing as it made a tremendous noise and vibration - to the extent that one day, the ceiling in my team's office caved in over my colleague's desk. Luckily she was not there. Between that the the dreadful smell of hot fat, it was not the nicest place to work.
Tried calling The Old Shades to book a table but they seem to have problems on the telephone line - it's a nightmare of inaudible static. Dropped an email to their booking address and asked them to confirm.
OK booking confirmed in my name. Except they spelt it wrong as per usual. If you're likely to arrive early and don't know my name, PM me.
Merci.
Cheers Brazen

You don't want to do that walk with luggage. Follow the signs from St Pancras to Kings Cross London Underground and take the Piccadilly Line southbound to Covent Garden. Take the elevator, don't try to climb the stairs! It's a short walk from there.

I'm just going to post this here...
In celebration of Mrs B and I's 10 year wedding anniversary, we're planning a return trip to Scotland in 2016 (the location of our honeymoon back in the day). But we've also discussed stopping in London for a day or two, in part to meet the Languish crew.
So anyways... for those who might be interested please keep May 2016 in mind as a chance to meet the one and only Barrister...
It was great to meet all of you. A great time was had. You are all so sweet. Thank you for your hospitality.
I arrived early, but fortunately Tricky is always very prompt and turned up shortly afterwards with Lusti and CF, who are both adorable, as are their accents. Thanks for the wine guys, so sweet of you to bring that all the way from Paris
As we caught up on their Euro travels and previous Languish meets, I was scanning the door for the next arrival. A Chinese guy was hovering in the door looking around and glancing at his phone. "Oh look, it's Mono," I joked. Lusti insisted Mono wasn't in London any more and had moved on to the Nordics. And then.. yes... the man, the myth, the money, the Mono came over to our table and asked "Brazen?" True to form he didn't buy a round but did ask for a glass of tap water (so long as it was free). He was great company and a perfect addition to our little group of random strangers off the internet :bowler:
He could only stay 20 minutes before meeting Mrs Mono, who'd gone shopping, so I'm not sure if our two ex-pats garbon and Tamas, or our resident handsome frog Eochaid believed us when they turned up!
The List - if any of us had met you at a previous Languish meet, chances are we talked about you.
I stayed half an hour longer than I meant, missed my usual train, the next one was cancelled and I didn't get home until 10. Needless to say my article's running late...
Oh, Eochaid, I may have misled you when I said I left school in 1979 - that was primary school, not secondary. That's what two pints of real ale does to me. No wonder you said I looked good for my age!

BB, you're on. In fact, if you're including Fife in your Scottish travels I could stay with relatives and show you round St Andrews and the like. In fact they hold a Chariots of Fire themed race along the West Sands in May! Be warned the weather can be... variable in Scotland in Spring - you could easily get snowed in in May! The Scots have a word for it - dreich.
Not as epic as ordering tap water at La Tour d'Argent, but still pretty good on ™ The Mono scale™. :)

Further to our discussion on modern youth slang, the "Cheeky Nando's" furore is a stunning example.
Quoteyou know when you go down town with the lads and you all realize you're hank marvin' so you say "lads let's go Maccers" but your mate Smithy a.k.a. The Bantersaurus Rex has some mula left on his nandos gift card and he's like "mate let's a have a cheeky nandos on me" and you go "Smithy my son you're an absolute ledge" so you go have an extra cheeky nandos with a side order of Top Quality Banter
QuoteIt's like when you and the lads have just landed in heathrow after a week getting wankered in magaluf. Someone probably got 'chris' tattooed on their arse cheek cos chris is an absolute fuckin ledge. You ride the bantmobile all the way back into town for a cheeky nandos before everyone goes home so their mums can wash their #ladsontour shirts you all had made specially. Fuckin top notch.
Quotem8 it's well simple. it's like you're hanging with the lads and you're peckish, and you're fancying a maccies cos you haven't been in ages, and it'd be proper good banter. But then your mandem will be like "nah let's have a cheeky nandos" and then you'll be proper chuffed, the banter train's going full steam ahead today, so you have your butterfly chicken and 2 fino sides and it's fucking top

Piri piri appears to be the most common spelling though.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piri_piri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piri_piri)
Seems to be more and more famous. I spoke once with a Malaysian of Chinese ethnicity who liked it, and he saw it as a symbol of Portuguese gastronomy. The word itself is of Swahili origin but was lusitanised.
Nandos is very popular in the UK. Hits a sweet spot in the middle market where it's attractive to families and to teens/twentysomethings.
Personally like their chicken but their chips are pretty meh.
The Urban Dictionary definition of Cheeky Nandos:
A term used by fuckboys over social media in order to facilitate their need for attention by adding the epithet 'Cheeky' to the restaurant chain Nandos, usually followed by 'with the lads' - aka a group of tools equal to or greater than the original tool posting the update.
Expect some sort of deeply depressing Metrosexual attire and a variety of group selfies and close up shots of the food that's been ordered. Essentially using this term means the final nail in the coffin of your masculinity has been hammered.
'Off out with the lads for a Cheeky Nandos'
'Anyone that says their Nandos is cheeky deserves a peasant's death'

It would be good form to get his permission first.
Get who's permission?
I thought we were talking about Mono.

I am very surprised that there is demand for my pics  Sometimes I think it is best if they disappear forever
It all started when I wanted to go see the Imperial War Museum early on in the trip. Wife had no interest, so she went to the Victoria and Albert Museum when I went to see the tanks and planes. She thought very highly of the museum, and thought it was a great tragedy that I wasn't there.
After we came back from Scandinavia, she wanted me to check out the museum by myself. When I came back to the hotel, I saw Brazen's invitation and the name of the pub. It struck me that the time was 30 minutes away and the place was like a 15 minute walk at most from my hotel. So I took a photograph of the map with my phone and set off for the place. I explained to the staff that "a lady booked a table for like 6-8 people, but we met on the internet so I had no idea what her real name was."
I prepared about a thousand lines to prove that I am, well, me. I am glad that it only took one word :bowler:

In the West we have phones with built in maps that will even guide you to a desired location (even on foot!).
No scribes allowed. :)

The first thing we did when we landed in London was to buy a SIM card so that the wife's phone has access to the internet. Since it cost 30 pounds, I elected to forgo buying one for myself :bowler:
Since I reached my intended destination anyway, I considered that I successfully saved 30 pounds :)

Just to let you know, my phone in HK has no contract on it. I survive on prepaid cards that cost US$12, and each card last several months. I can enjoy access to the internet for one hour by spending US$1 on the card.
I had normal service at all times, including data and text, phone calls were 0.20 per minute.
I've been home a few hours, busy checking pics and ready for bed.
Again, the meet up was great.

Well, if we want to, the wife's phone can also have normal service in the UK. But using our phone outside HK is very expensive, much more expensive than 30 pounds.
Eochaid, Thank you. The Its Only Rock & Roll and the London Beatles Store across the street were awesome, we got him a Queen shirt and a Beatles one.
When asked what he wanted us to bring back from London, his response was Freddie Mercury, so he got a post card. :D

Will it have a British flag on it? I'll take one in a size large please. :)

The first question that you ask should be cost, not size :contract:
Meeting Mono was certainly a nice bonus for a generally excellent trip
