QuoteAnti-Semitism Is On The Rise In German Schools

MUNICH -- Scrawling swastikas on synagogues, Jew-baiting during demonstrations, desecration of Jewish cemeteries: Once again, 75 years after the Holocaust, hatred against Jews is taking place openly in Germany, even in schools.
Current figures from the German government show that the anti-Semitism is not only a perception: The number of crimes linked to anti-Semitism in Germany increased dramatically over the past year. While 788 cases were registered in 2013, there were 864 cases registered in 2014 -- a 10 percent increase.
The word "Jew" is often used as a curse or swear word in German schoolyards. This became clear during last weekend's Jewish Youth Congress, held in Berlin, which was also attended by Hans-Georg Maassen, the president of Germany's Domestic Intelligence Service. At the Youth Congress, speakers stated that the bullying of Jewish students has grown so pervasive that many "pupils concerned have to leave regular school to attend Jewish schools," according to the well-known German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Maassen states: "It is a fact that there are people who feel provoked by a kippa or the Star of David. One must be simply aware of that and, in those areas, one should act in an appropriate way."
Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, spoke out about this growing problem. In some areas of German cities, wearing a kippa or a necklace with a Star of David is seen as a provocation and might be the reason for attacks, Schuster said a few days ago.
Incidents in schools are leading to changes among students. "Due to specific cases of bullying and a general climate of anti-Jewish hostilities, some pupils prefer to attend Jewish schools and private schools," Deidre Berger, director of the American Jewish Committee in Berlin, told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.
Last week, Berger wrote in The Times of Israel that "anti-Semitic incidents occur every day in Germany, on the streets, in schoolyards, in train stations, on the soccer field, and throughout social media."
The Jewish community of Berlin, which is the largest in Germany, fears such attacks. Recently, publishers of the German-Jewish newspaper Jüdisches Berlin decided to mail their newspaper in neutral, unmarked envelopes so no one would know the recipients are Jewish.
It's a tough situation for German Jews. On the one hand, they're somewhat attached to German society and the membership therein. On the other hand, it's tough when you have Israel out there ruining the reputation of Jews everywhere.
I am surprised there are Jews living in Berlin, of all places.

Quite frankly, since there's been an Israel, I really don't understand why there's even a single Jew still hanging out in Europe and putting up with all that European bullshit.
I mean, yeah, it's different to live in Israel, but as if the last 1,000 years wasn't convincing enough, you'd think the last 100 would've driven the fucking point home. They are not liked, and they are not wanted. Don't want to do the Israeli thing? Fuck, come to America. All the Chinese take-out you could ever ask for.

Eh their reputation in Europe hasn't changed any since Israel was founded.

They're better off dealing with the European bullshit than they would be dealing with your Republican bullshit. And Israel? Who needs that shit? Terrorists, annoying religious types, and some people would have a moral problem with the Israeli state.

Republicans can be an annoying lot to get along with, but it's not like they're trying to stuff Jews into cattle cars here. The blacks and gays are in front of them in line. Besides, the GOP loves Jews, and actually need them, what with Israel to exist in order for their goofy doomsday scenario stuff to happen.
But when you say Europe is preferable to America or Israel for your average just-trying-to-not-be-genocided-for-being-Jewish Jew, I know you're just doing your Neil thing.
Given the number of Muslim kids in schools I'm surprised the rate is so low.
Antisemitism is huge in Sweden, and the reason is the :osama: part of the population.
I'm not convinced that making Sweden part of the ME was an awesome idea.

Really? Israel is a very conservative society (at least by European standards), with an inordinate amount of influence being given to fringe orthodox religious groups whose views are no better than those of muslim fundamentalists; it has weird religious laws (e.g. until recently it had no secular marriage); it is under a constant threat of terrorism; and now it has a lot of Russian immigrants. There are countless of reasons why anyone would prefer to live in Europe than in Israel.

It's funny how the article fails to mention that.
Wow. I went to the HuffPo link Tim posted. It claims it was translated from an article that originally appeared on the German HuffPo version.
But when you compare the articles, this paragraph was specifically omitted:
QuoteMittlerweile gehe das Hetzen gegen jüdische Schüler vor allem durch arabische Kinder so weit, "dass die Betroffenen die Regelschule verlassen und auf eine jüdische Einrichtung wechseln", lautete nach Informationen der "Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung" eine der Erkenntnisse des Kongresses.
It expressly mentions that the antisemitic bullying is primarily perpetrated by Arabic children.
Wow. Just wow.

My understanding is that Israel today is very different from Israel 30 years ago. They doubled their population, with most of the new blood coming from former USSR, creating a huge societal shift.

There are plenty of reasons why a Jew would prefer to live in Israel rather than Europe. Like 6 million of them. And don't pretend you're all that sympathetic, anyway.
You can't save $6 million simply by moving to Israel.

Wow. Just wow.
You guys can blame it on the Arabs all you want, but the responsibility of it still falls on Europeans and their governments--namely, their inability and outright refusal to integrate its already antisemitic Muslim immigrant communities with festival seating asylum and immigration laws, combined with decades of pro-Palestinian/anti-Zionist/"we-don't-have-a-problem-with-Jews-just-Israel" politics, and there you go: a Europe that has become hostile for its Jews. Don't blame immigrant Muslims for the growing antisemitism of Europe; they just found fertile ground.

As a matter of fact, you called it "Political correctness gone mad", when it was banned in California. Also it was an "Injustice". If you were truly concerned about animal welfare you wouldn't eat it to begin with.

I was joking. I have always fessed up to the fact that my love for foie gras compromises my moral position. I think it should be banned to be honest but I also love it and eat it when I can. Sorry, I don't have to be ethical on everything I do. Founding Fathers owned slaves.

I know you are just trolling, but prior to Israel, Jews in Europe were considered untrustworthy and dangerous, and of bad pedigree, because they had no country of their own.
Now that Israel exist, it is Israel why Jews in Europe are considered untrustworthy and dangerous, and of bad pedigree

See, but if you think about it, the odds of being genocided in Europe are pretty slim. It doesn't happen often these days. On the other hand, your odds of being randomly shot by someone with the right to conceal-carry an assault rifle in the US is high. Your odds of being unable to afford health care are high. Your odds of having the job creators uncreate your job for the sake of their quarterly earnings report are high. Your odds of being robbed or killed by the police are high. Those things happen in the US every day.
Odds are high Neil does his Neil thing.
FWIW in 2 years in Germany never encountered any incidents of anti-Semitism. That is very anecdotal but then again so are the reports of school bullying. And the kinds of things they are talking about in schools seem similar to what I recall from own experience of the public school systems in the US.
