A gunman killed seven people in a shooting spree across the rural Missouri community of Tyrone before turning his weapon on himself, police said Friday. A ninth person at a home searched during the investigation was also found dead, apparently of natural causes, said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Kinder.
The suspect, believed to be a 36-year-old male, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body was located inside of a car in a neighboring county — one of six active crime scenes, police said.
"In our job we see a lot of bad stuff, and this is bad," Kinder said at a news conference, adding, "It's not natural to see that sort of thing."
Texas County Sheriff's deputies were alerted to the trail of slayings at 10:15 p.m. CT Thursday, when a juvenile female called 911 to say she heard gunshots in her home and fled. Deputies responded and found two people dead inside the home.
After investigating further, another five people were found dead in three other residences in Tyrone, an unincorporated community about 95 miles east of Springfield. There was also one person injured at one of the scenes and taken to the hospital, Texas County authorities said.
At a separate residence, the body of a deceased elderly female, who appeared to have died from natural causes, was also discovered. Kinder said police are trying to confirm the relationship between the shooter and the victims, and declined to release their identities pending notification of next-of-kin.
