For those so religiously inclined, of course?
To me, while I can appreciate the concept, I don't like how some people approach it. To me, giving up stuff for Lent would have to involve something that I would, in general, be prepared to give up for good (so it would be like a "trial run" in ascesy) - and since there is nothing I would be prepared to give up for good, I don't bother with Lent commitments.
What I don't like is when people treat it as a sort of exercise in denial and release - i.e. give up something only so that when Lent is over they are already planning to get back into it, probably with more gusto. To me that's pretty deviant.
Discuss.
Come to think of it I just started a diet on Wednesday. What a weird coincidence.
I guess I thought Lent was, on a spiritual level, supposed to help you feel want as a way to feel the tragedy of losing Jesus and give you empathy for those less fortunate. But I have not really heard too many Lent-practicing Christians discuss what the official purpose is.
I'm not a bloody papist.

Neither are Lutherans but they do Lent.
Yeah, Lutherans are just Papists who can't stand Italians.

The Church of England are bloody paptists now? I am not sure I can reconcile this attitude with a loyal servant of the Crown.

GF's inlaws are finally rubbing off on him.
I like to eat fish on Fridays this time of year as a nod to my beloved Catholic brothers and sisters. FISH SLIDERS FROM WHITE CASTLE YEAH BOY :showoff:
I would give up drinking and debauchery . But Lent always coincides with my winter trip to Cuba.
It's not really a religious thing here.
I'm giving up sugar and sugary things.

That's why "A Mighty Fortress" is the only chuch hymn I actually like to sing. It's about history and killing Catholics and shit. :showoff:
I'm giving up Lent, mostly.
I was a TA in a Modern Film History course at Columbia. I was slightly shocked when after Ash Wednesday all the Catholic students didn't have their due assignment finished, and they told me it was because of that. Of course, I had to give them extra days on religious belief grounds...
Some years ago For Lent, I gave up giving up things for Lent; seems to have worked out well and I'm guilt free. :)
The Chinese musical Lent isn't so bad, though.

Besides, isn't it the other way - they can't say "L" so they use the "R" sound instead?
You are thinking of the Japanese BB.
Just think about typical Chinese names for a second.

I was just thinking of the Chinese waiters in "A Christmas Story" to be honest. :)
Stereotypical Chinese waiters always say "Fly Lice."

Some quick google-fu suggests it absolutely was a Chinese restaurant, but that the writers got that part wrong.

I have no idea. I just go with the racist stereotype that strikes me there and then.
Huh. And here I spent my whole life thinking that was a Japanese Restaurant.
