Title: 90s throwback: Nintendo or Sega?
Post by: Syt on February 07, 2015, 12:13:07 PM
Among friends at the time, no one had a Genesis (or Mega Drive as it was called here), but several including me had an SNES. And so the SNES is my 16 bit console of choice. Also, I had an NES before. I think the SNES had a bit of an advantage thanks to Nintendo's established series that had some of their seminal releases on the SNES - Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania ... I've since tried Sega games via emulator, but I admit I return to some of the Nintendo classics more often (and miserably fail ... partially because the dpad on the XBox360 controller is nowhere near as precise as the SNES one).

Random games I loved in no particular order: Super Star Wars/ESB/RotJ (Hod, how hard those game were), Castlevania IV, Zelda, Super Mario World, Chrono Trigger (which I only played on emulator, though), Super Street Fighter II, Contra III, F-Zero, Super Mario Kart, Indiana Jones Adventures, Actraiser, Shadowrun, Parodius ....

But seriously...while mostly being a PC gamer at that time, I did have a Sega Genesis.  Never did have an SNES.

I had a mega drive.
The sonic the hedgehog adverts really sold me on it. My best friends, who had the good fortune of being two boys with only a year between them and thus always had an awesome collection of toys, already had one (a strange alternative model with somewhat red buttons).
It turned out I tended not to like platformers too much but still. Fifa soccer et al were great.
These days I would probably say SNES is better, it has a nice collection of RPGS, but most of those were never released here so...

When I lived in Japan I bought myself a SNES and amassed a HUGE collection of second hand games.

I had a SNES back then but both were popular in France, unlike Germany where Nintendo European headquarters have been since the beginning, guess it helped. Nowadays I have both, modded for imports, PAL/NTSC compatibility and Stereo (the old Megadrive 1 sucked arse with its monaural sound unless you had headphones).

Faves back then

Streets of Rage 2, Shining Force series, Landstalker (Isometric 3D for the win and fall!), Desert Strikes series, Micromachines, EA Sports Games back then (FIFA and NHL).
I even got Pier Solar, a recent (!) Megadrive RPG on a 64 meg cartridge something not done at the heyday of the console.

Ogre Battle only time I blind bought a game (played again during the PS1 era) Secret of Mana, Zelda A Link to the Past, Bomberman, Illusion of Time, Street Fighter 2, Contra/Super Probotector, Super Mario Kart, Mystical Ninja/Goemon Fight, Lufia I & II(latter in German nowadays) ,Turtles in Time, Castlevania IV.

Special Mention to the Uncharted Waters series but I only managed to get the games recently. Also, German "imports" for being cheaper than other PAL releases, for RPGs mostly (Secret of Mana for 5 € in the flea market OMFG! Deutsch lernen!). Also discovered Terranigma (never released in North America for some reason) in Teutonia for cheap.
Just need a Japanese version of ISS Deluxe.
Got Chrono Trigger recently, but on DS for cheap.

Not an emu fan since it's not that true enough for the real retrogamer, though playing translated ROMs is nice for these exclusive Japanese releases.

PS: How could I forget Shining Force I & II?  :Embarrass:

The Angry Video Game Nerd makes a compelling argument for both.  But I purchased a used Sega Genesis, but never had a SNES, so I'll go with Seger.

I was already an adult with income and very few expenses at this point, so I had both the SNES and Genesis. I liked both probably equally at the time, and the Genesis seemed to have some edgier games that I don't think would've been put on a Nintendo console. Looking back I think the SNES had more games that "stand the test of time" than Genesis/MegaDrive did.

both: countless hours of Centurion: Defender of Rome on the Sega
and equally countless hours of Wing Commander on the SNES.

I only owned an SNES, so that's where my memories lay.

I got a paper route to buy SNES.  The SNES seemed to have better games despite being technologically inferior.  It was also the last console I ever bought.  My folks bought a PC, and I never looked back.  Still there were some great games on the SNES.  I really enjoyed the JRPGS back then, before the graphics got all animey.

After my NES I went with PCs exclusively until I got an XBOX to play KOTOR around 2003.  I guess I missed this whole era.

I had a SNES, but previously I had had a Sega Master System, so I'm sorta torn.  :P

I think I may have as well.  I don't remember when I got a NES but it was early 1990's.  Before the Soviet Union fell apart.

I skipped that console generation.

I enjoyed both, but I probably enjoyed playing games on my friend's SEGA Genesis a bit more.  Between Sonic and Streets of Rage, we lost a lot of hours to that thing.  Also, SEGA Channel was the shizz- I was in awe, even if we only found 20 of the 50 games available per month to be playable (never mind the fact that the Genesis had a catalog that allowed a rotating 50 games per month).

Consoles i've owned, in order:

Colecovision
Atari 2600 (a step down from Coleco)
NES
SNES
Playstation
Wii

I played a lot of Genesis with friends and the SNES was the better system.
