After Epiphany, that's when Christmas finishes here in Spain.

Just took them down today.  My wife wanted to leave them up until after epiphany, whatever that is, but the weather is going to go back to being shitty tomorrow, so meh.

Epiphany aka the Twelth Day of Christmas aka Feast of Three Wise Men is 6 January. It is a public holiday in some Catholic countries (including, since 2011 or so, in Poland).

QuoteThe Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, which falls on 2 February, celebrates an early episode in the life of Jesus. In the Eastern Orthodox Church and some Eastern Catholic Churches, it is one of the twelve Great Feasts, and is sometimes called Hypapante (Ὑπαπαντή, lit., "Meeting" in Greek). Other traditional names include Candlemas, the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin, and the Meeting of the Lord

In Polish Catholicism Candlemas is a traditional end of the Christmas period.

You take them down before Epiphany, otherwise it's bad luck.

I don't know; when you leave the lights up all year, it sort of becomes a metaphysical question when you take them and when you put them up. :hmm:

Now when do you turn on and turn off your electric reindeer and white "icicle" lights, that's a tricky one.

After New Year, usually the 3. This year they were taking down on the 1st. I also took down the exterior lights, something I usually do in the spring when the snow is all gone but this year the snow was already gone.

As an old world Catholic, I used to wait until Epiphany.
Now it seems I do it sooner each year.
I think I spent Jan.1 cleaning up and removing Christmas stuff.

Depends which day you consider Twelfth Night to be (it can be either the 5th or 6th January depending on your traditions.)

Ours will come down on the 6th, as always.

I don't know what half of those terms mean.
My mam follows some rule about when the 3 kings went home or Somehing...
I find decorations still being around now rather silly. It should be done 28th or so. Though I don't bother at all, there is no point

The tree gets taken out shortly after Epiphany. I usually leave a candle or two around until daylight saving time.

Mom begins the multi-day process sometimes the middle of the first week of January.  It's a major logistical effort involving plastic bins, label makers and both parents, one of which really doesn't want to be there.

I don't really decorate, so for me the holiday season usually ends when the Xmas cookie tins are finally empty.

The Christmas decorations got fewer and fewer the older the kids got.  I haven't hung lights outside for about 3 years and we haven;t gotten a tree the last two.  Mom was horrified that we weren't getting a tree at first but I think she has come to accept it.

Same here, except the Christmas decorations should be down by Epiphany. So probably tomorrow.

Otherwise it's bad luck unless you leave them up until next Christmas

Though according to Wiki it used to be Candlemass, from a 17th century poet:
'Down with the rosemary, and so
Down with the bays and mistletoe;
Down with the holly, ivy, all,
Wherewith ye dress'd the Christmas Hall'

Actual conversation about 10 minutes ago with Pops:

"Breaking down today?"
"Yeah."
"Well, you know, traditionally..."
"Don't give me that bullshit."

Tradition here says either 13th day of Christmas or 20th day of Christmas.

I've put up no decorations, so I will just  :nelson: to those who brought pine, fir or plastic trees indoors.
You probably don't even have a fireplace, do you?

For me, pretty much any time after New Year's Day that I'm off work and want to bother with it.

This year, I happened to have this weekend off and nothing else in particular to do, so they came down yesterday.

Back in the late 90s, when I was single and living out in the middle of nowhere, I pretty much got out of town on my days off if I possibly could, so one year I think the decorations were still up around the end of March/start of April.

I took them down yesterday.  It is whenever I can get to it after new years.  I used to take it down the weekend after Christmas but my wife insisted I start waiting until after New Years.

The only decorations we bothered with this year are a wreath on the front door that my mother made and a Cthulhu wreath we hung above the fireplace.  Both are still up and I dunno when Princesca will take them down.  :hmm:

The few decorations I have stay up all year (which also applies for my Halloween ones). It is a good thing that I've never set up my nativity set as that'd be up all year too. -_-

Really small ones - knick knacks really. 2 black santa clauses and a nutcracker.

When I was a kid they'd go up on Christmas Eve and stay up until epiphany/12th night, but now I get sick of them by 2nd January and take them down the same day I empty the fridge of seasonally inappropriate food.

But then I only have an 18" plastic tree and LED lights from the 99p shop.

Well, I only have a small tree (the picture of which I posted in the Cat Megathread) and a similarly sized reindeer made of pinetree branches (which I initially thought was a doggy). They are already starting to lose needles, so will throw them out after Tuesday.

I took mine down New Year's day, which is usually about when I do take them down. I leave up the Christmas wreaths on the doors for a while as they make a good winter wreath.

Just had a chat with my mother regarding this issue, and after being informed of Candlemas she's decided she'll take them down by then; she loves setting up intrincate Christmas decorations and nativity scenes so she'll use any excuse to keep them up.

Actually, our management company does not allow Christmas decorations on the apartment doors or in the corridors.  But people still do it.  As long as the decorations aren't too large, the security guards turn a blind eye.

As long as they don't block the hallways?
