Well? I'm not all that sure myself. Blood On The Tracks is a pretty good record. I sometimes like the Byrds' versions better than the originals.
Love, I guess. I enjoy some Dylan. I like "The Hurricane."
Love. It keeps my inner leftist nourished.
Pretty apathetic toward Bob D, really. Now, Bob Seger, on the other hand...
Who is this: Bob Dylan?
May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young
Ah yeah. Pity Bob Dylan didn't stay young. Old Bob has a creepiness factor about him.
So does Old Ide. You love me. :)
I like some of his songs. Short of love.
Like him as a songwriter, don't care for him as a performer.
He was the master of nasty, you have to give him that.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot babe, it's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.
I ain't saying you treated me unkind
You could've done better, but I don't mind
You just kind of wasted my precious time
Don't think twice, it's all right.

The most apt criticism I've ever heard of Bob Dylan is "He writes awesome songs; unfortunately, he insists on singing them himself." Neil Young syndrome.
He's a product of his times, and I appreciate him in that context. Other artists may have done the folk rock thing better, but they all point to him as the inspiration.
Like PW says, like him as a songwriter. Some of his best stuff is covered better by other artists.
His All along the Watchtower is superior to Hendrix's version.
Discuss.

In general I agree with your post except for your comment on Neil Young, who I think has (had?) a beautiful voice.

I never listen to him. But I do have a few covers done by other artists. So I guess I agree.
He has some good songs.

Agreed.
I like him in both roles, but I don't mind seeing him covered by other people. Heck, I think his scrawny voice gives him personality as a performer.
I like some of his more iconic songs (like "The Times, They Are A'Changing") but can't stand his voice in more generic ballads.
Which option should I choose?

I've not heard much Neil Young, but when I hear it I generally like it.
A couple weeks ago I bought a 4cd set of his first four albums, remastered by him, put out by his archive label and all for a bargain $10.
None of that putting out a series of ever more improved, X anniversary editions of the same album for like $15-25 a time, like some artists.

Neil Young's voice is fine. Dylan on the other hand is barely comprehensible most of the time. He does write awesome songs though.

IMO his best songs are "After the Goldrush", "Southern Man", "Ohio", and "Old Man".
Cortez the Killer > all
Cinnamon Girl.
And I really like hugely emotional songs being performed by people that aren't great technical singers or just don't have a booming voice, makes them sound more sincere in my book. Early Springsteen was a mess, for example, and seeing clips from that time as he struggles to hit the high notes of Thunder Road chills my spine.

Yeah, interesting lyrics. The songs of his I listened too recently have made me think, I'll have to check out those lyrics more carefully, read them like the poetry the best of them can be; which I guess is what he and Dylan are also, poets.

He's got a great voice for
some things. I love CSNY, but I hate most of his solo work (some exceptions). In fact, I'll go ahead and take that back. Neil Young's problem isn't his voice, it's his scattershot songwriting. When he's on, he's on, but when he's off, he's off-key and painful to listen to (see: Neil's cover of John Lennon's "Imagine." It's the worst cover I've heard, bar none, and that's including the Cardigans' "Iron Man").
Rage Against The Machine does a much better Maggie's Farm than anybody else.

:P I like his voice.
But yeah, Tom Morello is probably the best guitarist I've seen live even though Adam Jones is more technically proficient, but T00L's structure doesn't give him the room to improvise as much. And Angus Young just does what Angus does.

Believe it or not, guitarists usually consider the opposite to be true. Adam Jones isn't that technically proficient; he just picks stuff up really quickly. He used to be pretty terrible about telling guitarists just getting started not to take lessons, because he didn't, so that clearly meant guitar lessons weren't worth it. Morello's bag of tricks is a little smaller, but he's got a really clearly-defined style, while I'd argue that more often than not, Jones tends to follow Danny Carey's lead.

The River is one of my favorite songs that I never listen to, because it makes me want to go play real-life Frogger at the nearest available highway.
Springsteen sucks.
But I do like the River.
