Do any of you parent or uncle/auntie types have any favourite books appropriate for 1 to 3 year olds you can recommend?
Goodnight Moon was always both my nieces' favorites at bedtime.
Curious George :punk:
The Monster at the End of this Book :o
Richard Scarry.
My kids love big picture books with pictures of animals, or of construction equipment. Apparently there doesn't have to be any story involved. We just point to the Tiger, or bulldozer, ask him what it is, and then tell him.
Anything with flaps or pop ups are also a big hit.
Fairy tales are a pretty good bet too. Stories like Goldilocks, or the Three Little Pigs, are classics for a reason.
I liked some board book Dr. Seuss stories, but I'm not sure they're my kids favourites.
Sandra Boynton is pretty good too.
Caillou, you heathen.
If you actually want to read it to them then I have no recommendation. Different language and all.
Babar :punk:
My 2.5 year old has a lot of books but he loves these ones the most:
The Little Blue Truck (http://www.amazon.com/Little-Blue-Truck-Board-Book/dp/0547248288/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415219238&sr=8-1&keywords=little+blue+truck)
What the Ladybird Heard (http://www.amazon.com/What-Ladybird-Heard-Julia-Donaldson/dp/0230706509/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1415219304&sr=8-2&keywords=what+the+ladybird+heard)
The Pout Pout Fish (http://www.amazon.com/The-Pout-Pout-Fish-Adventure/dp/0374360979/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415219468&sr=8-1&keywords=the+pout+pout+fish)

I think it works because of the tempo of its prose. Combined with a rocking chair, it's a great decompressor for bedtime and it simply knocks toddlers out. I really enjoyed doing that with them.
Thick cardboard books, so I can hit them over the head with it when they don't pay attention.
Good night town from Footloose.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar was always very popular.
The Hairy Maclary books are very good too.
I liked Not Now Bernard, but it is pretty cruel.
So many cool books for toddlers
Being a toddler was awesome. :)
Thanks for the suggestions everyone :)

Richard Scarry.
This was a big favorite.
Huge hit here too. Best First Book Ever and Cars & Trucks and Things That Go are almost nightly reads.

Or if you
really want to traumatize the little ones:

Warning: actually reading this book to children is probably a form of abuse. :P
 That was Dwight Schrute's favorite book.
Who? Was he in your kindergarten?

That was around my grandparents' house when I grew up. Maybe one of the uncles still has it lying around somewhere...
I had the book. Dad frowned on it being in the house, but mom thought it was harmless. I was kind of annoyed by the book, as it just didn't seem plausible that tigers could turn into butter (sorry for the spoiler).
Oh they can.
In all seriousness, my kids' favorite book at this age was The Pigeon Wants a Puppy. Flap Your Wings was a close second.
I'm told that Pat the Bunny was one of my favorites when I was 1-ish.
Peter Rabbit, Panzer Killer.
Go with some of the classic Little Golden Books, like "The Poky Little Puppy" or "The Saggy Baggy Elephant". I'd be hesitant about some of the newer titles, though--there are too many TV and movie tie-ins there for my taste.

This is true. Stick with the classics.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar was the first book I ever read. I was like 4 or 5.
Goodnight Dune.

This was my hands down favorite as a child.

I also enjoyed:

But not as much.
Anything by Eric Carle, though "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?" is my favorite.
Richard Scary was also a favorite, though for bedtimes that gets a little rough, since it can be pretty visually stimulating. Best saved for after-naps/before dinnertime reading.
Dr Seuss early readers were awesome. I'm thinking "Red Fish, Blue Fish", rather than "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas".

I currently have mine in storage. :)
To be brought out when you adopt a Namibian baby?
The Gruffalo and any of Julia Donaldson's other books.

Really? This from a guy who claims to be Seuss reborn.
