QuoteThree Canadian Prisoners Escape in Helicopter: Police
By Gil Aegerter
A helicopter swooped into a Canadian prison and carried three prisoners away on Saturday evening, police said.
The men escaped from the prison in Orsainville just north of Quebec City, said Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau, a spokesperson for the Surete du Quebec, the provincial police force.
The Surete identified the men on its Twitter feed as Serge Pomerleau, 49; Denis Lefebvre, 53; and Yves Denis, 35. But the CBC said the last man's full name was Yves Denis Yvon Lamontagne.
Bilodeau said police were searching for a green helicopter with red and white markings that landed at the prison, though she didn't know whether it landed in a prison yard, on a building or nearby. She said it was last seen heading west from Quebec City.
She said a lone pilot was believed to have been aboard the copter when it arrived at the prison.
"There is a massive manhunt going on to try to locate them," she said.
Airports were alerted to watch for the aircraft, and the military was helping in an air search, she said.
She said she was uncertain of the crimes the men had committed but said they had been sent to prison as a result of Project Crayfish.
That investigation of drug trafficking led to the arrest of dozens of people on various charges.
In March 2013, two men escaped from a prison northwest of Montreal by climbing into a hovering helicopter that had been hijacked. The escapees and two people accused of hijacking the copter were captured within hours, according to media reports at the time.
yes, all prisons need to be updated with the latest air defense technology.

Unfortunately, it's been shown time and again to be necessary.

I really hope this guy screamed "No prison can hold me!" and then laughed maniacally as he sped away that last time.

I don't think shooting down a helo over a prison to prevent the potential escape of a couple dudes is a particularly good idea.

Helicopter isn't fancy enough for a first world country? Should they have beamed out, Tim?
Worked for Lex Luthor.
If we put explosive collars on any high security inmates, their means of escape would matter not.

It's not a supermax facility. It's provincial prison, for people sentenced to less than 2 years jail and for those awaiting their trial for more serious crimes, like these 3.

cables over the courtyard might make things more difficult though. But it doesn't prevent the helo from dropping a net down, however.
Stronger CAP is the answer.

They should be linked in groups of ten. If anyone escapes, all 10 security collars explode.

Why is it unacceptable? It's a job creation process.
Clearly, Canada's air defenses are lacking.
The convicts had their security measures relaxed. They petitionned the court to have their handcuffs removed, and other unspecified measures (medias have contradictory reports, so I won't speculate here), wich was granted by a judge.
The Federal government is responsible for regulating airspace above prisons (any areas, for that matter), and nothing has been done on this side since the last prison break.
We need to take better precautions.
We need to put the responsability of prisoners awaiting trial for Criminal causes to the federal government.
We also need to not let the judges rule on their condition of imprisoment.

Someone from Quebec wanting more powers for the federal government? That's a first.

I think it's the key solution here. These guys should have been handcuffed hand&feet, but somehow, they convinced the judge to relax their conditions as it impaired their defense. Despite having evidences that they would attempt to flee by helicopter...
Are all prisoners in Canada handcuffed at all times?
No, just level 5 prisoners.

We generally dont do that.

Depends on the security threat. Those with higher security threat are supposed to be handcuffed as soon as they exit their cell.

Some of the comments from Canadian posters here had made it sound like that in Canada, it's standard procedure to keep prisoners in cuffs even while they're in their cells. I suppose Canadians understood the context, but the rest of us were a bit confused.

Sorry about that.
It seems there was a major fuckup on this. There's a major fuckup in communications, that's for sure.
Police knew about the escape attempt since March, they even visited the convicts to inform them they knew. Despite this, someone (not a judge) from correctional services made the decision to relax their security measures, twice. Apparently, there was no notes in the file about the escape attempt.
The Minister of Justice doesn't look good on this, but it's hard to blame her. She's just been sweared in, it's a new ministry for her and it seems no one in the Justice department knows what happens, everyone giving contradictory info. One more PQ mess inherited by this governemnt.
Back in jail, until some other moron decides to alleviate their security rating.
Speaking of morons, the guys were still in Montreal.
It seems to me, given the level of planification required, given we have the world's largest unguarded border close by, I would have managed to land not so far from the border and move accross on foot or with an ATV, find a vehicle on the other side and be on my way to an airfield where I could leave for Costa Rica or Dominican Republic. Well, anywhere without an extradition treaty.
They are not dumb, this was a business escape. Lefebvre doesn't want to disappear, he still wants to control his gang. He can do it from inside the prison no problem. However, there is some deals you need to be present to do.
