In Detroit (and especially in my home town of Grand Rapids) Shrove Tuesday was Paczki Day; huge lines would form at the Polish bakeries in order to get authentic(ish) Paczkis.
At a former job one of our engineers was from Germany. On Rosenmontag he brought in doughnuts for the office.
Here in Florida there's no Paczkis to be found ( :(). Instead they have King Cake; which I take it comes from New Orleans, but it's something that I thought was part of Latin American Three Kings Day, not Carnival.
In any event how do you celebrate Carnival/Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras in your hometown?
PANCAKE DAY! :w00t:
We don't.
What the chinaman gentleman said.
Haven't done anything for Mardi Gras in past 15 years or so. There's usually a parade where they throw out cheap beads somewhere.
This will be the year that I don't wonder why people have smudges of dirt on their faces. -_-
We spent the weekend down in Mobile getting hit on the face with beads thrown by drunks from cheap floats. Also ate some good bbq. :licklips:
Awesome weekend, mardi gras in Mobile is still family friendly. Oh, we only ate three king cakes.
Are king cakes another word for funnel cakes?
on google images they look rather funky.

No, and was surprised to see them for sale at my local Fred Meyers.

 I LOVE Fred Meyer. I buy almost everything there, if they don't have it I figure I don't need it. I have done 100% of my XMas shopping there the last 3 years.
I've enjoyed hitting the Shrove Tuesday pancake dinners from time to time. Otherwise, never been much doing, except the sprinkling of ersatz New Orleans things, mainly in bars. Probably nothing at all here in Yankeedom HQ.
Semla.
In Germany, carnival is mostly in the time between Thursday and Monday before Mardi Gras. I think by Mardi Gras, people are so hungover that they just can't celebrate anymore.
I miss pancake day. The most underrated of holidays
I've had people bring king cakes in to work a couple of times down here, but that's about it. Don't recall it ever being celebrated in any way in either Philly or Boston.

PANCAKE DAY! :w00t:
Yup!
With lemon juice and crunchy sugar. Though there may be a cheese and herb course first.

...and someone brought a king cake in to work this afternoon.
I thought that was just in New Orleans?

Obviously not since I'm not there.
New Orleans seems to be the only place where you're expected to get falling down drunk. Other Catholic communities eat quaint food. Bars in non-Catholic areas will try and hype Mardi Gras for business.
@Cal I was mentioning king cakes to my mother this afternoon and she remarked that local grocery had both King Cakes & Fasnacht.
No fasnacht here and I'm sure nobody even knows what those are. We have not only lots of Catholics in Louisville but also lots of Cajun transplants for some reason, which probably explains the interest in Mardi Gras.
In any event happy Mardi Gras everyone. Here's Professor Longhair singing Mardi Gras in New Orleans:

It's 40 degrees F and raining in New Orleans right now. So fuck you, Mardi Gras.
